Isaiah 34:5-17

5 For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;
behold, it descends for judgment upon aEdom,
upon the people bI have devoted to destruction.
6The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood;
it is gorged with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
cFor the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 dWild oxen shall efall with them,
and fyoung steers with gthe mighty bulls.
Their land shall drink its fill of blood,
and their soil shall be gorged with fat.
8 hFor the Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
9 iAnd the streams of Edom
Hebrew her streams
shall be turned into pitch,
and her soil into sulfur;
her land shall become burning pitch.
10Night and day kit shall not be quenched;
lits smoke shall go up forever.
mFrom generation to generation it shall lie waste;
none shall pass through it forever and ever.
11 nBut the hawk and the porcupine
The identity of the animals rendered  hawk and  porcupine is uncertain
shall possess it,
the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
pHe shall stretch the line of qconfusion
Hebrew formlessness
over it,
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12Its nobles—there is no one there to call it a kingdom,
and all its princes shall be nothing.
13 sThorns shall grow over its strongholds,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses.
It shall be the haunt of tjackals,
an abode for ostriches.
Or owls

14 vAnd wild animals shall meet with hyenas;
the wild goat shall cry to his fellow;
indeed, there the night bird
Identity uncertain
settles
and finds for herself a resting place.
15 There the owl nests and lays
and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow;
indeed, there xthe hawks are gathered,
each one with her mate.
16Seek and read from the book of the Lord:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without her mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his Spirit has gathered them.
17 yHe has cast the lot for them;
his hand has portioned it out to them with the line;
they shall possess it forever;
from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

Isaiah 63:1-6

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from zEdom,
in crimsoned garments from aaBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
abmarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your acapparel red,
and your garments like his adwho treads in the winepress?
3 ae“I have trodden the winepress alone,
afand from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood
Or  their juice; also verse 6
spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 ahFor the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption
Or the year of my redeemed
had come.
5I looked, but ajthere was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
akI made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Jeremiah 49:7-22

Judgment on Edom

7Concerning alEdom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

am“Is wisdom no more in anTeman?
aoHas counsel perished from the prudent?
apHas their wisdom vanished?
8 aqFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of arDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
asthe time when I punish him.
9 atIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave augleanings?
avIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 awBut I have stripped Esau bare;
axI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and ayhe is no more.
11 azLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
baand let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: bbIf those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, bcwill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 bdFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that beBozrah shall become bfa horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 bgI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
bh“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
Or  of Sela

who hold the height of the hill.
Though you bjmake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 bkEdom shall become a horror. blEveryone who passes by it will be horrified bmand will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 bnAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their boneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, bpno man shall dwell there, bqno man shall sojourn in her. 19 brBehold, bslike a lion coming up from btthe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him
Septuagint, Syriac them
run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. bvFor who is like me? bwWho will summon me? bxWhat shepherd can stand before me?
20Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against byEdom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of bzTeman: caEven the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21At the sound of their fall cbthe earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, ccone shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against cdBozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart ceof a woman in her birth pains.”

Ezekiel 25:12-14

Prophecy Against Edom

12Thus says the Lord God: Because cfEdom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended cgin taking vengeance on them, 13therefore thus says the Lord God, chI will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from ciTeman even to cjDedan they shall fall by the sword. 14And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom ckby the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and clthey shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Ezekiel 35

Prophecy Against Mount Seir

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 cmSon of man, cnset your face coagainst cpMount Seir, and prophesy against it, 3and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: cqBehold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and crI will stretch out my hand against you, csand I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 ctI will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5Because cuyou cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword cvat the time of their calamity, cwat the time of their final punishment, 6therefore, cxas I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; cybecause you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 czI will make Mount Seir a waste daand a desolation, and I will cut off from it dball who come and go. 8And I will fill dcits mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all ddyour ravines dethose slain with the sword shall fall. 9 dfI will make you a perpetual desolation, and dgyour cities shall not be inhabited. Then dhyou will know that I am the Lord.

10Because you said, di‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and djwe will take possession of them’—although the dkLord was there 11therefore, dlas I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you dmaccording to the anger and dnenvy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And doI will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12And you shall know that I am the Lord.

dp“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; dqthey are given us to devour.’
13And dryou magnified yourselves against me dswith your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14Thus says the Lord God: dtWhile the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15As you durejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, dvMount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then dwthey will know that I am the Lord.

Obadiah 1-14

1The vision of Obadiah.

Edom Will Be Humbled

Thus says the Lord God dxconcerning Edom:
dyWe have heard a report from the Lord,
and a messenger has been sent among the nations:
Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!”
2Behold, I will make you small among the nations;
you shall be utterly despised.
Or  Behold, I have made you small among the nations; you are utterly despised

3 eaThe pride of your heart has deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
Or Sela

in your lofty dwelling,
ecwho say in your heart,
Who will bring me down to the ground?”
4Though you soar aloft like the eagle,
though your nest is set among the stars,
from there I will bring you down,

declares the Lord.
5 If edthieves came to you,
if plunderers came by night
how you have been destroyed!—
would they not steal only enough for themselves?
If eegrape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave gleanings?
6 efHow Esau has been pillaged,
his treasures sought out!
7All your allies have driven you to your border;
those at peace with you have deceived you;
they have prevailed against you;
egthose who eat your bread
Hebrew lacks  those who eat
have set a trap beneath you—
eiyou have
Hebrew he has
no understanding.
8 ekWill I not on that day, declares the Lord,
destroy the wise men out of Edom,
and understanding out of elMount Esau?
9And your mighty men shall be dismayed, emO Teman,
so that every man from enMount Esau will be cut off by slaughter.

Edom’s Violence Against Jacob

10 eoBecause of the violence done to your brother Jacob,
shame shall cover you,
epand you shall be cut off forever.
11 eqOn the day that you stood aloof,
eron the day that strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
esand cast lots for Jerusalem,
you were like one of them.
12 etBut do not gloat over the day of your brother
in the day of his misfortune;
eudo not rejoice over the people of Judah
in the day of their ruin;
evdo not boast
Hebrew  do not enlarge your mouth

in the day of distress.
13 exDo not enter the gate of my people
in the day of their calamity;
eydo not gloat over his disaster
in the day of his calamity;
ezdo not loot his wealth
in the day of his calamity.
14 faDo not stand at the crossroads
to cut off his fugitives;
do not hand over his survivors
in the day of distress.

Malachi 1:2-5

The Lord’s Love for Israel

2 fb“I have loved you,” says the Lord. fcBut you say, “How have you loved us?” “Is not Esau fdJacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet feI have loved Jacob 3but Esau I have hated. ffI have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.” 4If Edom says, “We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins,” the Lord of hosts says, “They may build, but I will tear down, and they will be called ‘the wicked country,’ and ‘the people with whom the Lord is angry forever.’” 5 fgYour own eyes shall see this, and you shall say, “Great is the Lord beyond the border of Israel!”
