5 For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens;
behold, it descends for judgment upon ^aEdom,
upon the people ^bI have devoted to destruction.
6 The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood;
it is gorged with fat,
with the blood of lambs and goats,
with the fat of the kidneys of rams.
^cFor the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7 ^dWild oxen shall ^efall with them,
and ^fyoung steers with ^gthe mighty bulls.
Their land shall drink its fill of blood,
and their soil shall be gorged with fat.
8 ^hFor the Lord has a day of vengeance,
a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.
9 ⁱAnd the streams of Edom ^{▼▼Hebrew her streams} shall be turned into pitch,
and her soil into sulfur;
her land shall become burning pitch.
10 Night and day ^kit shall not be quenched;
^lits smoke shall go up forever.
^mFrom generation to generation it shall lie waste;
none shall pass through it forever and ever.

the owl and the raven shall dwell in it.
^pHe shall stretch the line of ^qconfusion ^{▼▼Hebrew formlessness} over it,
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12 Its nobles—there is no one there to call it a kingdom,
and all its princes shall be nothing.
13 ^sThorns shall grow over its strongholds,
nettles and thistles in its fortresses.
It shall be the haunt of ^tjackals,
an abode for ostriches. ^{▼▼Or owls}
14 ^vAnd wild animals shall meet with hyenas;
the wild goat shall cry to his fellow;
indeed, there the night bird ^{▼▼Identity uncertain} settles
and finds for herself a resting place.
15 There the owl nests and lays
and hatches and gathers her young in her shadow;
indeed, there ^xthe hawks are gathered,
each one with her mate.
16 Seek and read from the book of the Lord:
Not one of these shall be missing;
none shall be without her mate.
For the mouth of the Lord has commanded,
and his Spirit has gathered them.
17 ^yHe has cast the lot for them;
his hand has portioned it out to them with the line;
they shall possess it forever;
from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

Jeremiah 49:7-22

Judgment on Edom

7 Concerning ^zEdom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

^aa“Is wisdom no more in ^abTeman?
^acHas counsel perished from the prudent?
^adHas their wisdom vanished?
8 ^aeFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of ^afDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
^agthe time when I punish him.
9 ^ahIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave ^aigleanings?
^ajIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 ^akBut I have stripped Esau bare;
^alI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and ^amhe is no more.
11 ^anLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
^aoand let your widows trust in me.”
12 For thus says the Lord: ^ap“If those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, ^aqwill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 ^arFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that ^asBozrah shall become ^ata horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 ^auI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
^av“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15 For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16 The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock, ^{▼▼Or of Sela}
who hold the height of the hill.
Though you ^axmake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 ^ay“Edom shall become a horror. ^azEveryone who passes by it will be horrified ^baand will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 ^bbAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their ^bcneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, ^bdno man shall dwell there, ^beno man shall sojourn in her. 19 ^bfBehold, ^bglike a lion coming up from ^bhthe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him ^{▼▼Septuagint, Syriac them} run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. ^bjFor who is like me? ^bkWho will summon me? ^blWhat shepherd can stand before me? 20 Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against ^bmEdom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of ^bnTeman: ^boEven the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21 At the sound of their fall ^bpthe earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22 Behold, ^bqone shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against ^brBozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart ^bsof a woman in her birth pains.”

Ezekiel 25:12-14

Prophecy Against Edom

12 “Thus says the Lord God: Because ^btEdom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended ^buin taking vengeance on them, 13 therefore thus says the Lord God, ^bvI will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from ^bwTeman even to ^bxDedan they shall fall by the sword. 14 And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom ^byby the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and ^bzthey shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Ezekiel 35

Prophecy Against Mount Seir

1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 ^ca“Son of man, ^cbset your face ^ccagainst ^cdMount Seir, and prophesy against it, 3 and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: ^ceBehold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and ^cfI will stretch out my hand against you, ^cgand I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 ^chI will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5 Because ^ciyou cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword ^cjat the time of their calamity, ^ckat the time of their final punishment, 6 therefore, ^clas I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; ^cmbecause you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 ^cnI will make Mount Seir a waste ^coand a desolation, and I will cut off from it ^cpall who come and go. 8 And I will fill ^cqits mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all ^cryour ravines ^csthose slain with the sword shall fall. 9 ^ctI will make you a perpetual desolation, and ^cuyour cities shall not be inhabited. Then ^cvyou will know that I am the Lord.

10 “Because you said, ^cw‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and ^cxwe will take possession of them’—although the ^cyLord was there— 11 therefore, ^czas I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you ^daaccording to the anger and ^dbenvy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And ^dcI will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12 And you shall know that I am the Lord.

^dd“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; ^dethey are given us to devour.’ 13 And ^dfyou magnified yourselves against me ^dgwith your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14 Thus says the Lord God: ^dhWhile the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15 As you ^direjoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, ^djMount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then ^dkthey will know that I am the Lord.

Amos 1:11-12

11 Thus says the Lord:

^dl“For three transgressions of ^dmEdom,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
^dnbecause he pursued his brother with the sword
^doand cast off all pity,
^dpand his anger tore perpetually,

Edom Will Be Humbled

Thus says the Lord God ^dtconcerning Edom:
^duWe have heard a report from the Lord,
and a messenger has been sent among the nations:
“Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!”
2 Behold, I will make you small among the nations;
you shall be utterly despised. ^{▼▼Or Behold, I have made you small among the nations; you are utterly despised}
3 ^dwThe pride of your heart has deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rock, ^{▼▼Or Sela}
in your lofty dwelling,
^dywho say in your heart,
“Who will bring me down to the ground?”
4 Though you soar aloft like the eagle,
though your nest is set among the stars,
from there I will bring you down,

declares the Lord.
5 If ^dzthieves came to you,
if plunderers came by night—
how you have been destroyed!—
would they not steal only enough for themselves?
If ^eagrape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave gleanings?
6 ^ebHow Esau has been pillaged,
his treasures sought out!
7 All your allies have driven you to your border;
those at peace with you have deceived you;
they have prevailed against you;
^ecthose who eat your bread ^{▼▼Hebrew lacks those who eat} have set a trap beneath you—
^eeyou have ^{▼▼Hebrew he has} no understanding.
8 ^egWill I not on that day, declares the Lord,
destroy the wise men out of Edom,
and understanding out of ^ehMount Esau?
9 And your mighty men shall be dismayed, ^eiO Teman,
so that every man from ^ejMount Esau will be cut off by slaughter.

Edom’s Violence Against Jacob

10 ^ekBecause of the violence done to your brother Jacob,
shame shall cover you,
^eland you shall be cut off forever.
11 ^emOn the day that you stood aloof,
^enon the day that strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
^eoand cast lots for Jerusalem,
you were like one of them.
12 ^epBut do not gloat over the day of your brother
in the day of his misfortune;
^eqdo not rejoice over the people of Judah
in the day of their ruin;
^erdo not boast ^{▼▼Hebrew do not enlarge your mouth}
in the day of distress.
13 ^etDo not enter the gate of my people
in the day of their calamity;
^eudo not gloat over his disaster
in the day of his calamity;
^evdo not loot his wealth
in the day of his calamity.
14 ^ewDo not stand at the crossroads
to cut off his fugitives;
do not hand over his survivors
in the day of distress.

Malachi 1:2-5

The Lord’s Love for Israel

2 ^ex“I have loved you,” says the Lord. ^eyBut you say, “How have you loved us?” “Is not Esau ^ezJacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet ^faI have loved Jacob 3 but Esau I have hated. ^fbI have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.” 4 If Edom says, “We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins,” the Lord of hosts says, “They may build, but I will tear down, and they will be called ‘the wicked country,’ and ‘the people with whom the Lord is angry forever.’” 5 ^fcYour own eyes shall see this, and you shall say, “Great is the Lord beyond the border of Israel!”
