Jeremiah 25:15-29

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath

15Thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: cTake from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of dthe sword that I am sending among them.”

17So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand, eand made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it: 18 fJerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials, gto make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day; 19 hPharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people, 20and iall the mixed tribes among them; all the kings of jthe land of Uz and all the kings of kthe land of the Philistines ( lAshkelon, mGaza, Ekron, and the remnant of nAshdod); 21 oEdom, pMoab, and the sons of qAmmon; 22all the kings of rTyre, all the kings of sSidon, and the kings of the coastland across tthe sea; 23 uDedan, vTema, wBuz, and all who cut xthe corners of their hair; 24all the ykings of Arabia and all the kings of zthe mixed tribes who dwell in the desert; 25all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of aaElam, and all the kings of abMedia; 26all the kings of acthe north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of adBabylon
Hebrew Sheshach, a code name for Babylon
shall drink.

27“Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: afDrink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of agthe sword that I am sending among you.’

28“And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: ahYou must drink! 29For behold, aiI begin to work disaster at the city that is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, ajfor I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the Lord of hosts.’

Jeremiah 50:28

28“A voice! They akflee and escape from the land of Babylon, alto declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, vengeance for amhis temple.

Jeremiah 51:6-9

6 anFlee from the midst of Babylon;
let every one save his life!
aoBe not cut off in her punishment,
apfor this is the time of the Lord’s vengeance,
the repayment he is rendering her.
7Babylon was aqa golden cup in the Lord’s hand,
armaking all the earth drunken;
asthe nations drank of her wine;
therefore the nations went mad.
8 atSuddenly Babylon has fallen and been broken;
auwail for her!
avTake balm for her pain;
perhaps she may be healed.
9We would have healed Babylon,
but she was not healed.
awForsake her, and axlet us go
each to his own country,
for ayher judgment has reached up to heaven
and has been lifted up even to the skies.

Ephesians 2:12

Ephesians 2:16

16and might bdreconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility.

Revelation of John 18:3-18

3For all nations have drunk
Some manuscripts fallen by

bfthe wine of the passion of her sexual immorality,
and bgthe kings of the earth have committed immorality with her,
and bhthe merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.”
4Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,

biCome out of her, my people,
lest you take part in her sins,
lest you share in her plagues;
5for bjher sins are heaped high as heaven,
and bkGod has remembered her iniquities.
6 blPay her back as she herself has paid back others,
and repay her bmdouble for her deeds;
mix a double portion for her bnin the cup she mixed.
7 boAs she glorified herself and lived in luxury,
so give her a like measure of torment and mourning,
since in her heart she says,
bp‘I sit as a queen,
I am no widow,
and mourning I shall never see.’
8For this reason her plagues will come bqin a single day,
death and mourning and famine,
and brshe will be burned up with fire;
for bsmighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”
9And btthe kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, buwill weep and wail over her bvwhen they see the smoke of her burning. 10 bwThey will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,

Alas! Alas! bxYou great city,
you mighty city, Babylon!
For byin a single hour your judgment has come.”
11And bzthe merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, 12cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.
Or  and slaves, and human lives

14 “The fruit for which your soul longed
has gone from you,
and all your delicacies and your splendors
are lost to you,
never to be found again!”
15 cbThe merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, ccwill stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,

16 Alas, alas, for the great city
cdthat was clothed in fine linen,
in purple and scarlet,
adorned with gold,
with jewels, and with pearls!
17For cein a single hour all this wealth cfhas been laid waste.”
And cgall shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off
18and chcried out cias they saw the smoke of her burning,

cjWhat city was like the great city?”
