Isaiah 40:1-6

Comfort for God’s People

1 ^aComfort, comfort my people, says your God.
2 ^bSpeak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and cry to her
that ^cher warfare ^{▼▼Or hardship} is ended,
that her iniquity is pardoned,
that she has received from the Lord’s hand
double for all her sins.
3 ^eA voice cries: ^{▼▼Or A voice of one crying}
^g“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
^hmake straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 ⁱEvery valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
5 ^jAnd the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together,
^kfor the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

The Word of God Stands Forever

6 A voice says, “Cry!”

^mAll flesh is grass,
and all its beauty ^{▼▼Or all its constancy} is like the flower of the field.
