Isaiah 40:3-5

3 aA voice cries:
Or  A voice of one crying

c“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
dmake straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 eEvery valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
5 fAnd the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together,
gfor the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

Matthew 3:1-3

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1 hIn those days iJohn the Baptist came preaching in jthe wilderness of Judea, 2 kRepent, for lthe kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 3For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

m“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
nPrepare
Or  crying: Prepare in the wilderness
the way of the Lord;
make his paths straight.’”

Matthew 17:10-13

10And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say pthat first Elijah must come?” 11He answered, Elijah does come, and qhe will restore all things. 12But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but rdid to him whatever they pleased. sSo also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” 13 tThen the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

Luke 1:16-17

16And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, 17and uhe will go before him vin the spirit and power of Elijah, wto turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and xthe disobedient to the wisdom of the just, yto make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”

Luke 3:3-6

3And he went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming za baptism of repentance aafor the forgiveness of sins. 4As it is written in abthe book of the words of Isaiah the prophet,

ahand the crooked shall become straight,
and the rough places shall become level ways,
