Isaiah 46:1-7

The Idols of Babylon and the One True God

1 aBel bows down; Nebo stoops;
their idols are on beasts and livestock;
these things you carry are borne
as burdens on weary beasts.
2They stoop; they bow down together;
they cannot save the burden,
but bthemselves go into captivity.
3 Listen to me, O house of Jacob,
all the remnant of the house of Israel,
cwho have been borne by me from before your birth,
carried from the womb;
4 deven to your old age I am he,
and to gray hairs I will carry you.
I have made, and I will bear;
I will carry and will save.
5 e“To whom will you liken me and make me equal,
and compare me, that we may be alike?
6 fThose who lavish gold from the purse,
and weigh out silver in the scales,
hire a goldsmith, and he makes it into a god;
gthen they fall down and worship!
7 hThey lift it to their shoulders, they carry it,
they set it in its place, and it stands there;
iit cannot move from its place.
If one cries to it, it does not answer
or save him from his trouble.

Jeremiah 50:2

2 Declare among the nations and proclaim,
set up a banner and proclaim,
conceal it not, and say:
jBabylon is taken,
kBel is put to shame,
Merodach is dismayed.
lHer images are put to shame,
her idols are dismayed.’

Jeremiah 51:44

44And I will punish mBel in Babylon,
and ntake out of his mouth owhat he has swallowed.
pThe nations shall no longer flow to him;
qthe wall of Babylon has fallen.

Jeremiah 51:47

47 Therefore, behold, the days are coming
when rI will punish the images of Babylon;
sher whole land shall be put to shame,
and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.

Jeremiah 51:52

52 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,
when tI will execute judgment upon her images,
uand through all her land
the wounded shall groan.

Daniel 3

Nebuchadnezzar’s Golden Image

1King Nebuchadnezzar made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits
A  cubit was about 18 inches or 45 centimeters
and its breadth six cubits. He set it up on wthe plain of Dura, in xthe province of Babylon.
2Then King Nebuchadnezzar sent to gather ythe satraps, the prefects, and zthe governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces to come to the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 3Then aathe satraps, the prefects, and the governors, the counselors, the treasurers, the justices, the magistrates, and all the officials of the provinces gathered for the dedication of the image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up. And they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up. 4And the herald abproclaimed aloud, “You are commanded, O acpeoples, nations, and languages, 5that when you hear the adsound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, you aeare to fall down and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up. 6And whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately afbe cast into a burning fiery furnace.” 7Therefore, as soon as all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, all agthe peoples, nations, and languages fell down and worshiped the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar had set up.

The Fiery Furnace

8Therefore at that time certain ahChaldeans aicame forward and maliciously accused the Jews. 9They declared
Aramaic answered and said; also verses 24, 26
to King Nebuchadnezzar, “O king, live forever!
10You, O king, akhave made a decree, that every man who alhears the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, amshall fall down and worship the golden image. 11And whoever does not fall down and worship anshall be cast into a burning fiery furnace. 12There are certain Jews whom you have aoappointed over the affairs of apthe province of Babylon: aqShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These men, O king, arpay no attention to you; they do not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

13Then Nebuchadnezzar asin furious rage commanded that atShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be brought. So they brought these men before the king. 14Nebuchadnezzar answered and said to them, “Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the golden image that I have set up? 15Now if you are ready when auyou hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the image that I have made, well and good.
Aramaic lacks  well and good
But if you do not worship, awyou shall immediately be cast into a burning fiery furnace. And axwho is the god who will deliver you out of my hands?”

16 ayShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. 17If this be so, azour God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king.
Or If our God whom we serve is able to deliver us, he will deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and out of your hand, O king.
18But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”

19Then Nebuchadnezzar was bbfilled with fury, and the expression of his face bcwas changed against bdShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He ordered the furnace heated seven times more than it was usually heated. 20And he ordered some of the mighty men of his army beto bind bfShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. 21Then these men were bgbound in their cloaks, their tunics,
The meaning of the Aramaic words rendered  cloaks and  tunics is uncertain; also verse 27
their hats, and their other garments, and they were thrown into the burning fiery furnace.
22Because the king’s order was biurgent and the furnace overheated, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up bjShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. 23And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell bkbound into the burning fiery furnace.

24Then King Nebuchadnezzar was blastonished and rose up bmin haste. He declared to his bncounselors, “Did we not cast three men bobound into the fire?” They answered and said to the king, “True, O king.” 25He answered and said, “But I see four men unbound, bpwalking in the midst of the fire, and they bqare not hurt; and the appearance of the fourth is like bra son of the gods.”

26Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the burning fiery furnace; he declared, bsShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the btMost High God, come out, and come here!” Then buShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out from the fire. 27And the bvsatraps, the prefects, the governors, and bwthe king’s counselors gathered together and saw that bxthe fire had not had any power over the bodies of those men. The hair of their heads was not singed, their bycloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them. 28Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, “Blessed be the God of bzShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who cahas sent his angel and cbdelivered his servants, who cctrusted in him, and set aside
Aramaic  and changed
the king’s command, and yielded up their bodies rather than ceserve and worship any god except their own God.
29Therefore cfI make a decree: Any cgpeople, nation, or language that speaks anything against the God of chShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego cishall be torn limb from limb, and their houses laid in ruins, for there is no other god who is able to rescue in this way.” 30Then the king promoted cjShadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in ckthe province of Babylon.

Daniel 5:4

4They drank wine and clpraised the cmgods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

Habakkuk 2:18-19

18 cnWhat profit is an idol
when its maker has shaped it,
a metal image, coa teacher of lies?
For its maker trusts in his own creation
when he makes cpspeechless idols!
19 cqWoe to him crwho says to a wooden thing, Awake;
to a silent stone, Arise!
Can this teach?
Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,
and csthere is no breath at all in it.

Revelation of John 17:5

5And on her forehead was written a name of ctmystery: cuBabylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth’s abominations.”
