Isaiah 58:1

True and False Fasting

1 Cry aloud; do not hold back;
alift up your voice like a trumpet;
bdeclare to my people their transgression,
to the house of Jacob their sins.

Ezekiel 16:2

2 cSon of man, dmake known to Jerusalem her abominations,

Hosea 2:2

2 Plead with your mother, plead
for eshe is not my wife,
and I am not her husband
that she put away fher whoring from her face,
and her adultery from between her breasts;

Micah 3:8-11

8But as for me, gI am filled with power,
with the Spirit of the Lord,
and with justice and might,
to declare to Jacob hhis transgression
and to Israel his sin.
9 iHear this, you heads of the house of Jacob
and rulers of the house of Israel,
jwho detest justice
and make crooked all that is straight,
10 kwho build Zion with blood
and Jerusalem with iniquity.
11 lIts heads give judgment for a bribe;
mits priests teach for a price;
nits prophets practice divination for money;
oyet they lean on the Lord and psay,
“Is not the Lord in the midst of us?
qNo disaster shall come upon us.”

Matthew 23:13-35

13But woe rto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you sshut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you tneither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.
Some manuscripts add here (or after verse 12) verse 14: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive the greater condemnation
15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single vproselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a wchild of xhell
Greek Gehenna; also verse 33
as yourselves.

16Woe to zyou, aablind guides, who say, abIf anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or acthe temple that has made the gold sacred? 18And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by adthe gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or aethe altar that makes the gift sacred? 20So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by afhim who dwells in it. 22And whoever swears by agheaven swears by ahthe throne of God and by aihim who sits upon it.

23 ajWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For akyou tithe mint and dill and alcumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: amjustice and mercy and faithfulness. anThese you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing aoa camel!

25 apWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For aqyou clean the outside of arthe cup and the plate, but inside they are full of asgreed and self-indulgence. 26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of atthe cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 auWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like avwhitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and awall uncleanness. 28So you also axoutwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of ayhypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 azWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31Thus you witness against yourselves that you are basons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 bbFill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33You serpents, bcyou brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to bdhell? 34 beTherefore bfI send you bgprophets and wise men and bhscribes, bisome of whom you will kill and crucify, and bjsome you will bkflog in your synagogues and blpersecute from town to town, 35so that on you may come all bmthe righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous bnAbel to the blood of boZechariah the son of Barachiah,
Some manuscripts omit  the son of Barachiah
whom you murdered between bqthe sanctuary and brthe altar.

Luke 11:39-52

39And the Lord said to him, bsNow you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of btgreed and wickedness. 40 buYou fools! bvDid not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41But bwgive as alms those things that are within, and behold, bxeverything is clean for you.

42 byBut woe to you Pharisees! For bzyou tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect cajustice and cbthe love of God. ccThese you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43Woe to you Pharisees! For cdyou love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44Woe to you! ceFor you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

45One of cfthe lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46And he said, Woe to you cglawyers also! For chyou load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 ciWoe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 cjSo you are witnesses and you ckconsent to the deeds of clyour fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49Therefore also cmthe Wisdom of God said, cn‘I will send them coprophets and apostles, cpsome of whom they will cqkill and persecute,’ 50so that crthe blood of all the prophets, shed csfrom the foundation of the world, may be ctcharged against this generation, 51from the blood of cuAbel to the blood of cvZechariah, who perished between cwthe altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be cxrequired of this generation. 52Woe to you cylawyers! czFor you have taken away the key of daknowledge. You dbdid not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”
