Isaiah 6

Isaiah’s Vision of the Lord

1In the year that aKing Uzziah died I bsaw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train
Or hem
of his robe filled the temple.
2Above him stood the seraphim. Each had dsix wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3And one called to another and said:

eHoly, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
fthe whole earth is full of his glory!”
Or may his glory fill the whole earth

4And hthe foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and ithe house was filled with smoke. 5And I said: “Woe is me! jFor I am lost; kfor I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the lKing, the Lord of hosts!”

6Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7And he mtouched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

Isaiah’s Commission from the Lord

8And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for nus?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.” 9And he said, “Go, and say to this people:

o“‘Keep on hearing,
Or Hear indeed
but do not understand;
keep on seeing,
Or see indeed
but do not perceive.’
10 rMake the heart of this people sdull,
Hebrew fat

and their ears heavy,
and blind their eyes;
ulest they see with their eyes,
and hear with their ears,
and understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”
11Then I said, v“How long, O Lord?”
And he said:
Until wcities lie waste
without inhabitant,
and houses without people,
and the land is a desolate waste,
12and the Lord removes people far away,
and the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
13 xAnd though a tenth remain in it,
it will be burned
Or purged
again,
like a terebinth or an oak,
whose stump zremains
when it is felled.”
aaThe holy seed
Or offspring
is its stump.

Isaiah 53

1 acWho has believed what he has heard from us?
Or  Who has believed what we have heard?

And to whom has aethe arm of the Lord been revealed?
2For he grew up before him like a young plant,
afand like a root out of dry ground;
aghe had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 ahHe was despised and rejected
Or forsaken
by men,
a man of sorrows,
Or pains; also verse 4
and acquainted with
Or  and knowing
grief;
Or sickness; also verse 4

and as one from whom men hide their faces
Or  as one who hides his face from us

he was despised, and anwe esteemed him not.
4 aoSurely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
apsmitten by God, and afflicted.
5 aqBut he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
arand with his wounds we are healed.
6 asAll we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
atand the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
auyet he opened not his mouth;
avlike a awlamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.
8By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
and as for his generation, axwho considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people?
9And they made his grave with the wicked
ayand with a rich man in his death,
although azhe had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet bait was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;
Or  he has made him sick

bcwhen his soul makes
Or  when you make his soul
an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
bethe will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see
Masoretic Text; Dead Sea Scroll  he shall see light
and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall bgthe righteous one, my servant,
bhmake many to be accounted righteous,
biand he shall bear their iniquities.
12 bjTherefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
Or  with the great

bland he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Or  with the numerous

because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
bnyet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
