Isaiah 63:1-6

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from aEdom,
in crimsoned garments from bBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
cmarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your dapparel red,
and your garments like his ewho treads in the winepress?
3 f“I have trodden the winepress alone,
gand from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood
Or  their juice; also verse 6
spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 iFor the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption
Or the year of my redeemed
had come.
5I looked, but kthere was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
lI made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Jeremiah 49:7-22

Judgment on Edom

7Concerning mEdom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

n“Is wisdom no more in oTeman?
pHas counsel perished from the prudent?
qHas their wisdom vanished?
8 rFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of sDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
tthe time when I punish him.
9 uIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave vgleanings?
wIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 xBut I have stripped Esau bare;
yI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and zhe is no more.
11 aaLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
aband let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: acIf those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, adwill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 aeFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that afBozrah shall become aga horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 ahI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
ai“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
Or  of Sela

who hold the height of the hill.
Though you akmake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 alEdom shall become a horror. amEveryone who passes by it will be horrified anand will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 aoAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their apneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, aqno man shall dwell there, arno man shall sojourn in her. 19 asBehold, atlike a lion coming up from authe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him
Septuagint, Syriac them
run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. awFor who is like me? axWho will summon me? ayWhat shepherd can stand before me?
20Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against azEdom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of baTeman: bbEven the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21At the sound of their fall bcthe earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, bdone shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against beBozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart bfof a woman in her birth pains.”

Ezekiel 25:12-14

Prophecy Against Edom

12Thus says the Lord God: Because bgEdom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended bhin taking vengeance on them, 13therefore thus says the Lord God, biI will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from bjTeman even to bkDedan they shall fall by the sword. 14And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom blby the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and bmthey shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Ezekiel 35

Prophecy Against Mount Seir

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 bnSon of man, boset your face bpagainst bqMount Seir, and prophesy against it, 3and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: brBehold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and bsI will stretch out my hand against you, btand I will make you a desolation and a waste. 4 buI will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 5Because bvyou cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword bwat the time of their calamity, bxat the time of their final punishment, 6therefore, byas I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; bzbecause you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. 7 caI will make Mount Seir a waste cband a desolation, and I will cut off from it ccall who come and go. 8And I will fill cdits mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all ceyour ravines cfthose slain with the sword shall fall. 9 cgI will make you a perpetual desolation, and chyour cities shall not be inhabited. Then ciyou will know that I am the Lord.

10Because you said, cj‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and ckwe will take possession of them’—although the clLord was there 11therefore, cmas I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you cnaccording to the anger and coenvy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And cpI will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12And you shall know that I am the Lord.

cq“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; crthey are given us to devour.’
13And csyou magnified yourselves against me ctwith your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14Thus says the Lord God: cuWhile the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15As you cvrejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, cwMount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then cxthey will know that I am the Lord.

Amos 1:11-12

11Thus says the Lord:

cy“For three transgressions of czEdom,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
dabecause he pursued his brother with the sword
dband cast off all pity,
dcand his anger tore perpetually,
ddand he kept his wrath forever.
12So I will send a fire upon deTeman,
and it shall devour the strongholds of dfBozrah.”

Obadiah 1-14

1The vision of Obadiah.

Edom Will Be Humbled

Thus says the Lord God dgconcerning Edom:
dhWe have heard a report from the Lord,
and a messenger has been sent among the nations:
Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!”
2Behold, I will make you small among the nations;
you shall be utterly despised.
Or  Behold, I have made you small among the nations; you are utterly despised

3 djThe pride of your heart has deceived you,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
Or Sela

in your lofty dwelling,
dlwho say in your heart,
Who will bring me down to the ground?”
4Though you soar aloft like the eagle,
though your nest is set among the stars,
from there I will bring you down,

declares the Lord.
5 If dmthieves came to you,
if plunderers came by night
how you have been destroyed!—
would they not steal only enough for themselves?
If dngrape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave gleanings?
6 doHow Esau has been pillaged,
his treasures sought out!
7All your allies have driven you to your border;
those at peace with you have deceived you;
they have prevailed against you;
dpthose who eat your bread
Hebrew lacks  those who eat
have set a trap beneath you—
dryou have
Hebrew he has
no understanding.
8 dtWill I not on that day, declares the Lord,
destroy the wise men out of Edom,
and understanding out of duMount Esau?
9And your mighty men shall be dismayed, dvO Teman,
so that every man from dwMount Esau will be cut off by slaughter.

Edom’s Violence Against Jacob

10 dxBecause of the violence done to your brother Jacob,
shame shall cover you,
dyand you shall be cut off forever.
11 dzOn the day that you stood aloof,
eaon the day that strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
eband cast lots for Jerusalem,
you were like one of them.
12 ecBut do not gloat over the day of your brother
in the day of his misfortune;
eddo not rejoice over the people of Judah
in the day of their ruin;
eedo not boast
Hebrew  do not enlarge your mouth

in the day of distress.
13 egDo not enter the gate of my people
in the day of their calamity;
ehdo not gloat over his disaster
in the day of his calamity;
eido not loot his wealth
in the day of his calamity.
14 ejDo not stand at the crossroads
to cut off his fugitives;
do not hand over his survivors
in the day of distress.

Malachi 1:2-5

The Lord’s Love for Israel

2 ek“I have loved you,” says the Lord. elBut you say, “How have you loved us?” “Is not Esau emJacob’s brother?” declares the Lord. “Yet enI have loved Jacob 3but Esau I have hated. eoI have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.” 4If Edom says, “We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins,” the Lord of hosts says, “They may build, but I will tear down, and they will be called ‘the wicked country,’ and ‘the people with whom the Lord is angry forever.’” 5 epYour own eyes shall see this, and you shall say, “Great is the Lord beyond the border of Israel!”
