Isaiah 63:1-6

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance

1 Who is this who comes from aEdom,
in crimsoned garments from bBozrah,
he who is splendid in his apparel,
cmarching in the greatness of his strength?
“It is I, speaking in righteousness,
mighty to save.”
2 Why is your dapparel red,
and your garments like his ewho treads in the winepress?
3 f“I have trodden the winepress alone,
gand from the peoples no one was with me;
I trod them in my anger
and trampled them in my wrath;
their lifeblood
Or  their juice; also verse 6
spattered on my garments,
and stained all my apparel.
4 iFor the day of vengeance was in my heart,
and my year of redemption
Or the year of my redeemed
had come.
5I looked, but kthere was no one to help;
I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold;
so my own arm brought me salvation,
and my wrath upheld me.
6I trampled down the peoples in my anger;
lI made them drunk in my wrath,
and I poured out their lifeblood on the earth.”

Jeremiah 49:7-22

Judgment on Edom

7Concerning mEdom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

n“Is wisdom no more in oTeman?
pHas counsel perished from the prudent?
qHas their wisdom vanished?
8 rFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of sDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
tthe time when I punish him.
9 uIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave vgleanings?
wIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 xBut I have stripped Esau bare;
yI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and zhe is no more.
11 aaLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
aband let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: acIf those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, adwill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 aeFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that afBozrah shall become aga horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 ahI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
ai“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
Or  of Sela

who hold the height of the hill.
Though you akmake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 alEdom shall become a horror. amEveryone who passes by it will be horrified anand will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 aoAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their apneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, aqno man shall dwell there, arno man shall sojourn in her. 19 asBehold, atlike a lion coming up from authe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him
Septuagint, Syriac them
run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. awFor who is like me? axWho will summon me? ayWhat shepherd can stand before me?
20Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against azEdom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of baTeman: bbEven the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21At the sound of their fall bcthe earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, bdone shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against beBozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart bfof a woman in her birth pains.”

Lamentations 4:21-22

21 bgRejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
you who dwell in bhthe land of Uz;
but to you also bithe cup shall pass;
you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.
22 bjThe punishment of your iniquity, O daughter of Zion, is accomplished;
he will keep you in exile no longer;
Or  he will not exile you again

but blyour iniquity, O daughter of Edom, he will punish;
he will uncover your sins.

Ezekiel 25:12-14

Prophecy Against Edom

12Thus says the Lord God: Because bmEdom acted revengefully against the house of Judah and has grievously offended bnin taking vengeance on them, 13therefore thus says the Lord God, boI will stretch out my hand against Edom and cut off from it man and beast. And I will make it desolate; from bpTeman even to bqDedan they shall fall by the sword. 14And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom brby the hand of my people Israel, and they shall do in Edom according to my anger and according to my wrath, and bsthey shall know my vengeance, declares the Lord God.

Obadiah 10-14

Edom’s Violence Against Jacob

10 btBecause of the violence done to your brother Jacob,
shame shall cover you,
buand you shall be cut off forever.
11 bvOn the day that you stood aloof,
bwon the day that strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
bxand cast lots for Jerusalem,
you were like one of them.
12 byBut do not gloat over the day of your brother
in the day of his misfortune;
bzdo not rejoice over the people of Judah
in the day of their ruin;
cado not boast
Hebrew  do not enlarge your mouth

in the day of distress.
13 ccDo not enter the gate of my people
in the day of their calamity;
cddo not gloat over his disaster
in the day of his calamity;
cedo not loot his wealth
in the day of his calamity.
14 cfDo not stand at the crossroads
to cut off his fugitives;
do not hand over his survivors
in the day of distress.

Obadiah 18-21

18 cgThe house of Jacob shall be a fire,
and the house of Joseph a flame,
and the house of Esau chstubble;
they shall burn them and consume them,
ciand there shall be no survivor for the house of Esau,

for the Lord has spoken.
