Isaiah 7:1-6

Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz

1In the days of aAhaz the son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, bRezin the king of Syria and cPekah the son of Remaliah the king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to wage war against it, but could not yet mount an attack against it. 2When the house of David was told, dSyria is in league with
Hebrew  Syria has rested upon
fEphraim,” the heart of Ahaz
Hebrew his heart
and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind.

3And the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and hShear-jashub
 Shear-jashub means A remnant shall return
your son, at the end of jthe conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Washer’s Field.
4And say to him, k‘Be careful, lbe quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two msmoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and nthe son of Remaliah. 5Because Syria, with Ephraim and othe son of Remaliah, has devised evil against you, saying, 6“Let us go up against Judah and terrify it, and let us conquer it
Hebrew  let us split it open
for ourselves, and set up the son of Tabeel as king in the midst of it,”

Isaiah 7:17

17 qThe Lord will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father’s house such days as have not come since the day that rEphraim departed from Judah—the king of Assyria!”

Isaiah 10:8-14

8for he says:
s“Are not my commanders all kings?
9 tIs not uCalno like vCarchemish?
Is not wHamath like xArpad?
yIs not zSamaria like Damascus?
10As my hand has reached to aathe kingdoms of the idols,
whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
11shall I not do to Jerusalem and abher idols
acas I have done to Samaria and her images?”
12 adWhen the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, aehe
Hebrew I
will punish the speech of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes.
13 agFor he says:

“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
and by my wisdom, for I have understanding;
I remove the boundaries of peoples,
and plunder their treasures;
like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.
14My hand has found like a nest
the wealth of the peoples;
and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken,
so I have gathered all the earth;
and there was none that moved a wing
or opened the mouth or chirped.”

Ezekiel 31:3-18

3Behold, ahAssyria was a aicedar in ajLebanon,
with beautiful branches and akforest shade,
aland of towering height,
its top among the clouds.
Or  its top went through the thick boughs; also verses 10, 14

4The waters nourished it;
the deep made it grow tall,
making anits rivers flow
around the place of its planting,
sending forth its streams
to all the trees of the field.
5So aoit towered high
above all the trees of the field;
its boughs grew large
and its branches long
from apabundant water in its shoots.
6 aqAll the birds of the heavens
made their nests in its boughs;
under its branches all the beasts of the field
gave birth to their young,
and under its shadow
lived all great nations.
7It was arbeautiful in its greatness,
in the length of its branches;
asfor its roots went down
to abundant waters.
8 atThe cedars auin the garden of God could not rival it,
nor the fir trees equal its boughs;
neither were the plane trees
like its branches;
no tree avin the garden of God
was its equal in beauty.
9I made it beautiful
in the mass of its branches,
and all the trees of awEden envied it,
that were in the garden of God.
10Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because axit
Syriac, Vulgate; Hebrew you
towered high and set its top among the clouds, and azits heart was proud of its height,
11I will give it into the hand of a mighty one of the nations. He shall surely deal with it as its wickedness deserves. I have cast it out. 12 baForeigners, bbthe most ruthless of nations, have cut it down and left it. bcOn the mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen, and its boughs have been broken in all bdthe ravines of the land, and beall the peoples of the earth have gone away from its shadow and left it. 13 bfOn its fallen trunk dwell all the birds of the heavens, and on its branches are all the beasts of the field. 14 bgAll this is in order that no trees by the waters may grow to towering height or set their tops among the clouds, and that no trees that drink water may reach up to them in height. For they are all given over to death, bhto the world bibelow, among the children of man,
Or  of Adam
with those who go down to the pit.

15Thus says the Lord God: On the day bkthe cedar
Hebrew it
went down to Sheol I caused mourning; I closed the deep over it, and restrained its rivers, and many waters were stopped. I clothed Lebanon in gloom for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.
16 bmI made the nations quake at the sound of its fall, bnwhen I cast it down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit. boAnd all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, bpwere comforted in the world below. 17They also went down to Sheol with it, bqto those who are slain by the sword; yes, brthose who were its arm, bswho lived under its shadow among the nations.

18 btWhom are you thus like in glory and in greatness buamong the trees of Eden? bvYou shall be brought down with bwthe trees of Eden to the world below. bxYou shall lie among the uncircumcised, bywith those who are slain by the sword.

bz“This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”
