the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
3And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
sHe shall not judge by twhat his eyes see,
or decide disputes by uwhat his ears hear,
4but vwith righteousness he shall judge the poor,
and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall wstrike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and xwith the breath of his lips yhe shall kill the wicked.
5Righteousness shall be the belt of his waist,
and zfaithfulness the belt of his loins.
6 aaThe wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
and a little child shall lead them.
7The cow and the bear shall graze;
their young shall lie down together;
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
8The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den.
9 abThey shall not hurt or destroy

adfor the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.
10In that day aethe root of afJesse, who shall stand as aga signal for the peoples—of him shall the nations inquire, and his resting place shall be glorious.

Isaiah 28:16

16therefore thus says the Lord God,
ahBehold, I am the one who has laid
Dead Sea Scroll  I am laying
as a foundation ajin Zion,
a stone, a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation:
‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’

Isaiah 40:1-11

Comfort for God’s People

1 akComfort, comfort my people, says your God.
2 alSpeak tenderly to Jerusalem,
and cry to her
that amher warfare
Or hardship
is ended,
that her iniquity is pardoned,
that she has received from the Lord’s hand
double for all her sins.
3 aoA voice cries:
Or  A voice of one crying

aq“In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord;
armake straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 asEvery valley shall be lifted up,
and every mountain and hill be made low;
the uneven ground shall become level,
and the rough places a plain.
5 atAnd the glory of the Lord shall be revealed,
and all flesh shall see it together,
aufor the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

The Word of God Stands Forever

6 A voice says, “Cry!”
And I said,
Revocalization based on Dead Sea Scroll, Septuagint, Vulgate; Masoretic Text  And someone says
What shall I cry?”
awAll flesh is grass,
and all its beauty
Or  all its constancy
is like the flower of the field.
7The grass withers, the flower fades
when the breath of the Lord blows on it;
surely the people are grass.
8 ayThe grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever.

The Greatness of God

9 Go on up to a high mountain,
O Zion, azherald of good news;
Or  O herald of good news to Zion

lift up your voice with strength,
O Jerusalem, herald of good news;
Or  O herald of good news to Jerusalem

lift it up, fear not;
say to the cities of Judah,
Behold your God!”
10 bcBehold, the Lord God comes with might,
and his arm rules for him;
bdbehold, his reward is with him,
and his recompense before him.
11 beHe will tend his flock like a shepherd;
bfhe will gather the lambs in his arms;
bghe will carry them in his bosom,
and gently lead those that are with young.

Isaiah 42:1-4

The Lord’s Chosen Servant

1 bhBehold bimy servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, bjin whom my soul delights;
bkI have put my Spirit upon him;
blhe will bring forth justice to the nations.
2He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice,
or make it heard in the street;
3 bma bruised reed he will not break,
and a faintly burning wick he will not quench;
bnhe will faithfully bring forth justice.
4He will not grow faint or be discouraged
Or bruised

till he has established justice in the earth;
and bpthe coastlands wait for his law.

Isaiah 49:1-8

The Servant of the Lord

1 Listen to me, bqO coastlands,
and give attention, you peoples brfrom afar.
bsThe Lord called me from the womb,
from the body of my mother he named my name.
2 btHe made my mouth like a sharp sword;
buin the shadow of his hand he hid me;
he made me a polished arrow;
in his quiver he hid me away.
3And he said to me, “You are my servant,
Israel, bvin whom I will be glorified.”
Or  I will display my beauty

4 bxBut I said, “I have labored in vain;
I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity;
yet surely my right is with the Lord,
and my recompense with my God.”
5 byAnd now the Lord says,
he bzwho formed me from the womb to be his servant,
to bring Jacob back to him;
and that Israel might be gathered to him—
for caI am honored in the eyes of the Lord,
and my God has become my strength
6he says:
“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant
to raise up the tribes of Jacob
and to bring back the preserved of Israel;
cbI will make you ccas a light for the nations,
that cdmy salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
7 Thus says the Lord,
cethe Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One,
cfto one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation,
the servant of rulers:
cgKings shall see and arise;
princes, and they shall prostrate themselves;
because of the Lord, who is faithful,
the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you.”

The Restoration of Israel

8 Thus says the Lord:
ch“In a citime of favor I have answered you;
in a day of salvation I have helped you;
I will keep you cjand give you
as a covenant to the people,
to establish the land,
ckto apportion the desolate heritages,

Isaiah 50:2-6

2 clWhy, when I came, was there no man;
why, when I called, was there no one to answer?
cmIs my hand shortened, that it cannot redeem?
Or have I no power to deliver?
cnBehold, by my rebuke coI dry up the sea,
cpI make the rivers a desert;
cqtheir fish stink for lack of water
and die of thirst.
3 crI clothe the heavens with blackness
and make sackcloth their covering.”
4 The Lord God has given csme
the tongue of those who are taught,
that ctI may know how to sustain with a word
cuhim who is weary.
Morning by morning he awakens;
he awakens my ear
to hear as those who are taught.
5 cvThe Lord God has opened my ear,
cwand I was not rebellious;
I turned not backward.
6 cxI gave my back to those who strike,
and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard;
I hid not my face
from disgrace and spitting.

Luke 24:27

27And cybeginning with czMoses and daall the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
