Jehoiakim Burns Jeremiah’s Scroll

1In the dfourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2Take ea scroll and fwrite on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and gJudah hand all the nations, ifrom the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today. 3 jIt may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, kso that every one may turn from his evil way, and lthat I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”

4Then Jeremiah called mBaruch the son of Neriah, and nBaruch wrote on oa scroll at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the Lord that he had spoken to him. 5And Jeremiah ordered pBaruch, saying, q“I am banned from going to the house of the Lord, 6so you are to go, and ron a day of fasting in the hearing of all the people in the Lord’s house you shall read the words of the Lord from the scroll that you have written at my dictation. You shall read them also in the hearing of all the men of Judah who come out of their cities.

Jeremiah 36:20-24

20So they went into the court to the king, having put the scroll in sthe chamber of Elishama the secretary, and they reported all the words to the king. 21Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the secretary. And Jehudi read it to the king and all the officials who stood beside the king. 22It was tthe ninth month, and the king was sitting in uthe winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. 23As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot. 24Yet vneither the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words was afraid, wnor did they tear their garments.

Jeremiah 36:27-32

27Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote at Jeremiah’s dictation, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 28Take another scroll and write on it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says the Lord, You have burned this scroll, saying, xWhy have you written in it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will cut off from it man and beast?” 30Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: yHe shall have none zto sit on the throne of David, aaand his dead body shall be cast out to the heat by day and the frost by night. 31 abAnd I will punish him and his offspring and his servants for their iniquity. I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the people of Judah all the disaster that I have pronounced against them, but they would not hear.’”

32Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to acBaruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who adwrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added to them.

Revelation of John 5

The Scroll and the Lamb

1Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne aja scroll written within and on the back, aksealed with seven seals. 2And alI saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, amthe Lion anof the tribe of Judah, aothe Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

6And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw apa Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with aqseven eyes, which are arthe seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders asfell down before the Lamb, ateach holding a harp, and augolden bowls full of incense, avwhich are the prayers of the saints. 9And they sang awa new song, saying,

Worthy are you to take the scroll
and to open its seals,
for axyou were slain, and by your blood ayyou ransomed people for God
from azevery tribe and language and people and nation,
10and you have made them baa kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”
11Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering bbmyriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12saying with a loud voice,

bcWorthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!”
13And I heard bdevery creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
14And the four living creatures besaid, “Amen!” and the elders bffell down and worshiped.
