Jeremiah 13:1-11

The Ruined Loincloth

1Thus says the Lord to me, “Go and buy a linen loincloth and aput it around your waist, and do not dip it in water.” 2So I bought a loincloth according to the word of the Lord, and put it around my waist. 3And the word of the Lord came to me a second time, 4Take the loincloth that you have bought, which is around your waist, and arise, bgo to the Euphrates and hide it there in ca cleft of the rock.” 5So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as the Lord commanded me. 6And after many days the Lord said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take from there dthe loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.” 7Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and I took ethe loincloth from the place where I had hidden it. And behold, the loincloth was fspoiled; it was ggood for nothing.

8Then the word of the Lord came to me: 9Thus says the Lord: hEven so will I spoil the pride of Judah and the great ipride of Jerusalem. 10This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, jwho stubbornly follow their own heart and have gone after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be like this loincloth, which is kgood for nothing. 11For as the loincloth clings to the waist of a man, so I made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to me, declares the Lord, lthat they might be for me a people, ma name, a praise, and a glory, but they would not listen.

Jeremiah 18:2-12

2Arise, and go down to nthe potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” 3So I went down to othe potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. 4And the vessel he was making of clay was pspoiled in the potter’s hand, and qhe reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do.

5Then the word of the Lord came to me: 6“O house of Israel, rcan I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the Lord. sBehold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. 7If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will tpluck up and break down and destroy it, 8and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, uturns from its evil, vI will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it. 9And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will wbuild and plant it, 10and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it. 11Now, therefore, say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: ‘Thus says the Lord, Behold, I am shaping disaster against you and devising a plan against you. xReturn, every one from his evil way, and yamend your ways and your deeds.’

12“But they say, z‘That is in vain! We will follow our own plans, and will every one act according to aathe stubbornness of his evil heart.’

Jeremiah 19

The Broken Flask

1Thus says the Lord, “Go, buy aba potter’s earthenware acflask, and take some of adthe elders of the people and some of aethe elders of the priests, 2and go out afto the Valley of the Son of Hinnom at the entry of the Potsherd Gate, and proclaim there the words that I tell you. 3You shall say, agHear the word of the Lord, ahO kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing such disaster upon this place that aithe ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle. 4 ajBecause the people have forsaken me and have profaned this place by making offerings in it to other gods whom neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have known; akand because they have filled this place with the blood of innocents, 5 aland have built the high places of Baal amto burn their sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, anwhich I did not command or decree, nor did it come into my mind 6therefore, aobehold, days are coming, declares the Lord, when this place shall no more be called Topheth, or apthe Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter. 7And in this place aqI will make void the plans of Judah and Jerusalem, arand will cause their people to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hand of those who seek their life. asI will give their dead bodies for food to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the earth. 8And I will make this city ata horror, aua thing to be hissed at. Everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will hiss because of all its wounds. 9 avAnd I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and their daughters, and everyone shall eat the flesh of his neighbor awin the siege and in the distress, with which their enemies and those who seek their life afflict them.’

10“Then axyou shall break aythe flask in the sight of the men who go with you, 11and shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: So will I break this people and this city, azas one breaks a potter’s vessel, baso that it can never be mended. bbMen shall bury in Topheth because there will be no place else to bury. 12Thus will I do to this place, declares the Lord, and to its inhabitants, making this city bclike Topheth. 13The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judahbdall the houses on whose beroofs offerings have been offered bfto all the host of heaven, and bgdrink offerings have been poured out to other gods—shall be defiled bhlike the place of Topheth.’”

14Then Jeremiah came from biTopheth, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy, bjand he stood in the court of the Lord’s house and said to all the people: 15Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, behold, I am bringing upon this city and upon all its towns all the disaster that I have pronounced against it, bkbecause they have stiffened their neck, blrefusing to hear my words.”

Jeremiah 27:2

2Thus the Lord said to me: bmMake yourself straps and bnyoke-bars, and put them on your neck.

The Siege of Jerusalem Symbolized

1“And you, boson of man, bptake a brick and lay it before you, and engrave on it a city, even Jerusalem. 2 bqAnd put siegeworks against it, brand build a siege wall against it, bsand cast up a mound against it. Set camps also against it, btand plant battering rams against it all around. 3And you, take an iron griddle, and place it as an iron wall between you and the city; buand set your face toward it, bvand let it be in a state of siege, and press the siege against it. This is bwa sign for the house of Israel.

4Then lie on your left side, and place the punishment

of the house of Israel upon it. For the number of the days that you lie on it, byyou shall bear their punishment.
5For I assign to you a number of days, bz390 days, caequal to the number of the years of their punishment. cbSo long shall you bear ccthe punishment of the house of Israel. 6And when you have completed these, you shall lie down a second time, but on your right side, and cdbear cethe punishment of the house of Judah. cfForty days I assign you, a day for each year. 7 cgAnd you shall set your face toward the siege of Jerusalem, chwith your arm bared, and you shall prophesy against the city. 8And behold, ciI will place cords upon you, so that you cannot turn from one side to the other, till you have completed cjthe days of your siege.

9“And you, take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and emmer,
A type of wheat

Hebrew my soul (or throat) has never been made unclean
cyFrom my youth up till now I have never eaten czwhat died of itself or was torn by beasts, nor has datainted meat come into my mouth.”
15Then he said to me, “See, I assign to you cow’s dung instead of human dung, on which you may prepare your bread.” 16Moreover, he said to me, dbSon of man, behold, dcI will break the supply
Hebrew staff
of bread in Jerusalem. They shall eat bread deby weight and with anxiety, and they shall drink water dfby measure and in dismay.
17I will do this that they may lack bread and water, and dglook at one another in dismay, and dhrot away because of their punishment.

Or  This burden is
djthe prince in Jerusalem and all the house of Israel who are in it.’
Hebrew  in the midst of them
11Say, dlI am a sign for you: dmas I have done, so shall it be done to them.
