Jeremiah 14:2-5

2 aJudah mourns,
and bher gates languish;
her people lament on the ground,
and cthe cry of Jerusalem goes up.
3Her nobles send their servants for water;
they come to the cisterns;
they find no water;
they return with their vessels empty;
they are dashamed and confounded
and ecover their heads.
4Because of the ground that is dismayed,
since there is fno rain on the land,
the farmers are ashamed;
they cover their heads.
5Even gthe doe in the field forsakes her newborn fawn
because there is no grass.

Jeremiah 14:18

18 hIf I go out into the field,
behold, those pierced by the sword!
iAnd if I enter the city,
behold, the diseases of famine!
jFor both prophet and priest ply their trade through the land
and have no knowledge.’”

Lamentations 5:10

10 kOur skin is hot as an oven
with lthe burning heat of famine.

Joel 1:4

4 What mthe cutting locust left,
nthe swarming locust has eaten.
What the swarming locust left,
othe hopping locust has eaten,
and what the hopping locust left,
pthe destroying locust has eaten.

Joel 1:8-18

8 Lament like a virgin
Or young woman
rwearing sackcloth
for the bridegroom of her youth.
9 sThe grain offering and the drink offering are cut off
from the house of the Lord.
tThe priests mourn,
uthe ministers of the Lord.
10The fields are destroyed,
vthe ground mourns,
because wthe grain is destroyed,
xthe wine dries up,
the oil languishes.
11 yBe ashamed,
The Hebrew words for  dry up and  be ashamed in verses 10–12, 17 sound alike
O tillers of the soil;
wail, O vinedressers,
for the wheat and the barley,
aabecause the harvest of the field has perished.
12The vine dries up;
abthe fig tree languishes.
Pomegranate, palm, and apple,
all the trees of the field are dried up,
and acgladness dries up
from the children of man.

A Call to Repentance

13 adPut on sackcloth and lament, aeO priests;
afwail, O ministers of the altar.
Go in, agpass the night in sackcloth,
ahO ministers of my God!
aiBecause grain offering and drink offering
are withheld from the house of your God.
14 ajConsecrate a fast;
akcall a solemn assembly.
Gather althe elders
and amall the inhabitants of the land
to the house of the Lord your God,
and cry out to the Lord.
15 Alas for the day!
anFor the day of the Lord is near,
and as destruction from the Almighty
 Destruction sounds like the Hebrew for  Almighty
it comes.
16Is not the food cut off
before our eyes,
apjoy and gladness
from the house of our God?
17 aqThe seed shrivels under the clods;
The meaning of the Hebrew line is uncertain

the storehouses are desolate;
the granaries are torn down
because asthe grain has dried up.
18How atthe beasts groan!
The herds of cattle are perplexed
because there is no pasture for them;
even the flocks of sheep suffer.
Or are made desolate

Joel 2:3

3 avFire devours before them,
and behind them a flame burns.
The land is like awthe garden of Eden before them,
but axbehind them a desolate wilderness,
and nothing escapes them.

Amos 4:6-9

Israel Has Not Returned to the Lord

6 “I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
and aylack of bread in all your places,
azyet you did not return to me,”

declares the Lord.
7 I also bawithheld the rain from you
when there were yet three months to the harvest;
bbI would send rain on one city,
and send no rain on another city;
one field would have rain,
and the field on which it did not rain would wither;
8so two or three cities bcwould wander to another city
to drink water, and would not be satisfied;
bdyet you did not return to me,”

declares the Lord.
9 be“I struck you with blight and mildew;
your many gardens and your vineyards,
your fig trees and your olive trees bfthe locust devoured;
bgyet you did not return to me,”

declares the Lord.

Haggai 1:9-11

9 bhYou looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, biI blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house bjthat lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. 10Therefore bkthe heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. 11And blI have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on bmthe grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and bnon all their labors.”
