because they have forsaken the Lord
to cherish

Hosea 8:7

7 For cthey sow the wind,
and they shall reap the whirlwind.
The standing grain has no heads;

dstrangers would devour it.

Joel 1:10-13

10The fields are destroyed,
ethe ground mourns,
because fthe grain is destroyed,
gthe wine dries up,
the oil languishes.
11 hBe ashamed,
The Hebrew words for  dry up and  be ashamed in verses 10–12, 17 sound alike
O tillers of the soil;
wail, O vinedressers,
for the wheat and the barley,
jbecause the harvest of the field has perished.
12The vine dries up;
kthe fig tree languishes.
Pomegranate, palm, and apple,
all the trees of the field are dried up,
and lgladness dries up
from the children of man.

A Call to Repentance

13 mPut on sackcloth and lament, nO priests;
owail, O ministers of the altar.
Go in, ppass the night in sackcloth,
qO ministers of my God!
rBecause grain offering and drink offering
are withheld from the house of your God.

Amos 4:6-9

Israel Has Not Returned to the Lord

6 “I gave you cleanness of teeth in all your cities,
and slack of bread in all your places,
tyet you did not return to me,”

declares the Lord.
7 I also uwithheld the rain from you
when there were yet three months to the harvest;
vI would send rain on one city,
and send no rain on another city;
one field would have rain,
and the field on which it did not rain would wither;
8so two or three cities wwould wander to another city
to drink water, and would not be satisfied;
xyet you did not return to me,”

declares the Lord.
9 y“I struck you with blight and mildew;
your many gardens and your vineyards,
your fig trees and your olive trees zthe locust devoured;
aayet you did not return to me,”

declares the Lord.

Micah 6:14-15

14 abYou shall eat, but not be satisfied,
and there shall be hunger within you;
you shall put away, but not preserve,
and what you preserve I will give to the sword.
15 acYou shall sow, but not reap;
you shall tread olives, but not anoint yourselves with oil;
you shall tread grapes, but not drink wine.

Zechariah 8:10

10For before those days adthere was no wage for man or any wage for beast, neither was there any safety from the foe for him who went out or came in, for I set every man against his neighbor.
