Jeremiah 15:10

Jeremiah’s Complaint

10 aWoe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! bI have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me.

Luke 12:49-53

Not Peace, but Division

49 c“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! 50 dI have a baptism to be baptized with, and how egreat is my distress until it is accomplished! 51 fDo you think that I have come to give peace on earth? gNo, I tell you, but rather division. 52For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. 53They will be divided, hfather against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

John 7:40-52

Division Among the People

40When they heard these words, isome of the people said, “This really is jthe Prophet.” 41Others said, “This is kthe Christ.” But some said, lIs the Christ to come from Galilee? 42Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes mfrom the offspring of David, and comes nfrom Bethlehem, the village owhere David was?” 43So there was pa division among the people over him. 44 qSome of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

45 rThe officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46The officers answered, s“No one ever spoke like this man!” 47The Pharisees answered them, tHave you also been deceived? 48 uHave any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? 49But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” 50 vNicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 51 w“Does our law judge a man without first xgiving him a hearing and learning what he does?” 52They replied, yAre you from Galilee too? Search and see that zno prophet arises from Galilee.”

Acts 13:45-50

45 aaBut abwhen the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with acjealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, adreviling him. 46And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God aebe spoken first to you. afSince you thrust it aside and judge yourselves agunworthy of eternal life, behold, we ahare turning to the Gentiles. 47 aiFor so the Lord has commanded us, saying,

aj“‘I have made you aka light for the Gentiles,
that you may albring salvation to the ends of the earth.’”
48And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and amglorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed. 49And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region. 50 anBut the Jews
Greek Ioudaioi probably refers here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, in that time
incited the devout apwomen of high standing and the leading men of the city, aqstirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and ardrove them out of their district.

Acts 14:2

2 asBut the atunbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against authe brothers.
