8The priests did not say, ‘Where is the Lord?’
aThose who handle the law did not know me;
bthe shepherds
Or rulers

dthe prophets prophesied by Baal
and went after ethings that do not profit.

Jeremiah 2:26

26 “As a thief is shamed when caught,
so the house of Israel shall be shamed:
fthey, their kings, their officials,
their priests, and their prophets,

Ezekiel 34:2

2 gSon of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them, even to the shepherds, Thus says the Lord God: hAh, shepherds of Israel iwho have been feeding yourselves! jShould not shepherds feed the sheep?

Zechariah 11:17

17 kWoe to my worthless shepherd,
lwho deserts the flock!
May the sword strike his arm
and mhis right eye!
Let his arm be wholly withered,
his right eye utterly blinded!”

13But woe nto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you oshut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you pneither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.
Some manuscripts add here (or after verse 12) verse 14: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive the greater condemnation
15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single rproselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a schild of thell
Greek Gehenna; also verse 33
as yourselves.

16Woe to vyou, wblind guides, who say, xIf anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or ythe temple that has made the gold sacred? 18And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by zthe gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or aathe altar that makes the gift sacred? 20So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by abhim who dwells in it. 22And whoever swears by acheaven swears by adthe throne of God and by aehim who sits upon it.

23 afWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For agyou tithe mint and dill and ahcumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: aijustice and mercy and faithfulness. ajThese you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing aka camel!

25 alWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For amyou clean the outside of anthe cup and the plate, but inside they are full of aogreed and self-indulgence. 26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of apthe cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 aqWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like arwhitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and asall uncleanness. 28So you also atoutwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of auhypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 avWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

Luke 11:42-52

42 awBut woe to you Pharisees! For axyou tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect ayjustice and azthe love of God. baThese you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43Woe to you Pharisees! For bbyou love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44Woe to you! bcFor you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”

45One of bdthe lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46And he said, Woe to you belawyers also! For bfyou load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 bgWoe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 bhSo you are witnesses and you biconsent to the deeds of bjyour fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49Therefore also bkthe Wisdom of God said, bl‘I will send them bmprophets and apostles, bnsome of whom they will bokill and persecute,’ 50so that bpthe blood of all the prophets, shed bqfrom the foundation of the world, may be brcharged against this generation, 51from the blood of bsAbel to the blood of btZechariah, who perished between buthe altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be bvrequired of this generation. 52Woe to you bwlawyers! bxFor you have taken away the key of byknowledge. You bzdid not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”
