Jeremiah 20

Jeremiah Persecuted by Pashhur

1Now aPashhur the priest, the son of bImmer, who was cchief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2Then dPashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him ein the stocks that were in the upper fBenjamin Gate of the house of the Lord. 3The next day, when gPashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord does not call your name hPashhur, but Terror on Every Side. 4For thus says the Lord: Behold, I will make you ia terror to yourself and to all your friends. They shall fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall strike them down with the sword. 5Moreover, jI will give all the wealth of the city, all its gains, all its kprized belongings, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them and seize them and carry them to Babylon. 6And you, lPashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. To Babylon you shall go, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you and all your friends, mto whom you have prophesied falsely.”

7 O Lord, nyou have deceived me,
and I was deceived;
oyou are stronger than I,
and you have prevailed.
pI have become a laughingstock all the day;
everyone mocks me.
8For whenever I speak, I cry out,
I shout, qViolence and destruction!”
For rthe word of the Lord has become for me
sa reproach and tderision all day long.
9If I say, “I will not mention him,
or speak any more in his name,”
uthere is in my heart as it were a burning fire
shut up in my bones,
and vI am weary with holding it in,
and I cannot.
10 wFor I hear many whispering.
xTerror is on every side!
Denounce him! yLet us denounce him!”
say all my zclose friends,
aawatching for abmy fall.
Perhaps he will be deceived;
then acwe can overcome him
and take our revenge on him.”
11But adthe Lord is with me as a dread warrior;
therefore my persecutors will stumble;
aethey will not overcome me.
afThey will be greatly shamed,
for they will not succeed.
Their ageternal dishonor
will never be forgotten.
12O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous,
ahwho sees the heart and the mind,
Hebrew kidneys

let me see your vengeance upon them,
for to you have I committed my cause.
13 ajSing to the Lord;
praise the Lord!
For he has delivered the life of the needy
from the hand of evildoers.
14 akCursed be the day
on which I was born!
The day when my mother bore me,
let it not be blessed!
15Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,
“A son is born to you,”
almaking him very glad.
16Let that man be like amthe cities
that the Lord overthrew without pity;
anlet him hear a cry in the morning
and an alarm at noon,
17 aobecause he did not kill me in the womb;
so my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb forever great.
18 apWhy did I come out from the womb
aqto see toil and sorrow,
and spend my days in shame?

Jeremiah 34

Zedekiah to Die in Babylon

1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, when arNebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army asand all the kingdoms of the earth under his dominion and all the peoples were fighting against Jerusalem and all of its cities: 2“Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Go and speak to atZedekiah king of Judah and say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: auBehold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. 3 avYou shall not escape from his hand but shall surely be captured and delivered into his hand. awYou shall see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face. And you shall go to Babylon.’ 4Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah! axThus says the Lord concerning you: ay‘You shall not die by the sword. 5You shall die in peace. azAnd as spices were burned for your fathers, the former kings who were before you, so people shall baburn spices for you bband lament for you, saying, “Alas, lord!”’ For I have spoken the word, declares the Lord.”

6Then Jeremiah the prophet spoke all these words to Zedekiah king of Judah, in Jerusalem, 7when the army of the king of Babylon was fighting against Jerusalem and against all the cities of Judah that were left, bcLachish and bdAzekah, befor these were the only bffortified cities of Judah that remained.

8The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after King Zedekiah bghad made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem bhto make a proclamation of liberty to them, 9 bithat everyone should set free his Hebrew slaves, male and female, bjso that no one should enslave a Jew, his brother. 10And they obeyed, all the officials and all the people who had entered into the covenant that everyone would set free his slave, male or female, so that they would not be enslaved again. They obeyed and set them free. 11But afterward they turned around and took back the male and female slaves bkthey had set free, and brought them into subjection as slaves. 12The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 13Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I myself made a covenant with your fathers when blI brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, saying, 14 bm‘At the end of seven years each of you must set free the fellow Hebrew who has been sold to you and has served you six years; bnyou must set him free from your service.’ But boyour fathers did not listen to me or incline their ears to me. 15You recently repented and did what was right in my eyes bpby proclaiming liberty, each to his neighbor, and bqyou made a covenant before me in the brhouse that is called by my name, 16but then you turned around bsand profaned my name when each of you took back his male and female slaves, btwhom you had set free according to their desire, and you brought them into subjection to be your slaves.

17Therefore, thus says the Lord: You have not obeyed me buby proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother and to his neighbor; bvbehold, I proclaim to you liberty bwto the sword, to pestilence, and to famine, declares the Lord. bxI will make you a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. 18And the men who transgressed my covenant and did not keep the terms of bythe covenant that they made before me, I will make them like
Hebrew lacks  them like
cathe calf that they cut in two and passed between its parts
19the officials of Judah, the officials of Jerusalem, cbthe eunuchs, the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the calf. 20And I will give them into the hand of their enemies ccand into the hand of those who seek their lives. cdTheir dead bodies shall be food for the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth. 21And ceZedekiah king of Judah and his officials I will give into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives, into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon cfwhich has withdrawn from you. 22Behold, cgI will command, declares the Lord, and will chbring them back to this city. ciAnd they will fight against it and take it and burn it with fire. cjI will make the cities of Judah a desolation ckwithout inhabitant.”
