Jeremiah 20

Jeremiah Persecuted by Pashhur

1Now aPashhur the priest, the son of bImmer, who was cchief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things. 2Then dPashhur beat Jeremiah the prophet, and put him ein the stocks that were in the upper fBenjamin Gate of the house of the Lord. 3The next day, when gPashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The Lord does not call your name hPashhur, but Terror on Every Side. 4For thus says the Lord: Behold, I will make you ia terror to yourself and to all your friends. They shall fall by the sword of their enemies while you look on. And I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon. He shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall strike them down with the sword. 5Moreover, jI will give all the wealth of the city, all its gains, all its kprized belongings, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, who shall plunder them and seize them and carry them to Babylon. 6And you, lPashhur, and all who dwell in your house, shall go into captivity. To Babylon you shall go, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you and all your friends, mto whom you have prophesied falsely.”

7 O Lord, nyou have deceived me,
and I was deceived;
oyou are stronger than I,
and you have prevailed.
pI have become a laughingstock all the day;
everyone mocks me.
8For whenever I speak, I cry out,
I shout, qViolence and destruction!”
For rthe word of the Lord has become for me
sa reproach and tderision all day long.
9If I say, “I will not mention him,
or speak any more in his name,”
uthere is in my heart as it were a burning fire
shut up in my bones,
and vI am weary with holding it in,
and I cannot.
10 wFor I hear many whispering.
xTerror is on every side!
Denounce him! yLet us denounce him!”
say all my zclose friends,
aawatching for abmy fall.
Perhaps he will be deceived;
then acwe can overcome him
and take our revenge on him.”
11But adthe Lord is with me as a dread warrior;
therefore my persecutors will stumble;
aethey will not overcome me.
afThey will be greatly shamed,
for they will not succeed.
Their ageternal dishonor
will never be forgotten.
12O Lord of hosts, who tests the righteous,
ahwho sees the heart and the mind,
Hebrew kidneys

let me see your vengeance upon them,
for to you have I committed my cause.
13 ajSing to the Lord;
praise the Lord!
For he has delivered the life of the needy
from the hand of evildoers.
14 akCursed be the day
on which I was born!
The day when my mother bore me,
let it not be blessed!
15Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,
“A son is born to you,”
almaking him very glad.
16Let that man be like amthe cities
that the Lord overthrew without pity;
anlet him hear a cry in the morning
and an alarm at noon,
17 aobecause he did not kill me in the womb;
so my mother would have been my grave,
and her womb forever great.
18 apWhy did I come out from the womb
aqto see toil and sorrow,
and spend my days in shame?

Jeremiah 48

Judgment on Moab

1 arConcerning Moab.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:

Woe to asNebo, for it is laid waste!
atKiriathaim is put to shame, it is taken;
the fortress is put to shame auand broken down;
2the renown of Moab is no more.
In avHeshbon they planned disaster against her:
Come, let us cut her off awfrom being a nation!’
You also, O axMadmen, shall be brought to silence;
the sword shall pursue you.
3 “A voice! A cry from ayHoronaim,
Desolation and great destruction!’
4Moab is destroyed;
her little ones have made a cry.
5 azFor at the ascent of Luhith
they go up weeping;
Hebrew weeping goes up with weeping

for bbat the descent of Horonaim
they have heard the distressed cry
Septuagint (compare Isaiah 15:5)  heard the cry
of destruction.
6Flee! Save yourselves!
You will be like bda juniper in the desert!
7For, bebecause you trusted in your works and your treasures,
you also shall be taken;
and bfChemosh bgshall go into exile
with bhhis priests and his officials.
8 biThe destroyer shall come upon every city,
and no city shall escape;
the valley shall perish,
and bjthe plain shall be destroyed,
as the Lord has spoken.
9 Give wings to Moab,
for she would fly away;
her cities shall become a desolation,
with no inhabitant in them.
10 bkCursed is he who does blthe work of the Lord with slackness, and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from bloodshed.

11 Moab has been at ease from his youth
and has bmsettled on his dregs;
he has not been emptied from vessel to vessel,
nor has he gone into exile;
so his taste remains in him,
and his scent is not changed.
12Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I shall send to him pourers who will pour him, and empty his vessels and break his
Septuagint, Aquila; Hebrew their
jars in pieces.
13Then boMoab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as bpthe house of Israel was ashamed of bqBethel, their confidence.

14 How do you say, ‘We are heroes
and mighty men of war’?
15The destroyer of brMoab and his cities has come up,
and the choicest of his young men have bsgone down to slaughter,
declares btthe King, buwhose name is the Lord of hosts.
16The calamity of Moab is near at hand,
and his affliction hastens swiftly.
17 bvGrieve for him, all you who are around him,
and all who know his name;
say, bwHow the mighty scepter is broken,
the glorious staff.’
18 bx“Come down from your glory,
and sit on the parched ground,
O inhabitant of byDibon!
For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you;
he has destroyed your strongholds.
19 bzStand by the way caand watch,
O inhabitant of cbAroer!
Ask him who flees and her who escapes;
say, ‘What has happened?’
20Moab is put to shame, for it is broken;
ccwail and cry!
Tell it beside cdthe Arnon,
that ceMoab is laid waste.
21Judgment has come upon cfthe tableland, upon Holon, and cgJahzah, and Mephaath, 22and chDibon, and ciNebo, and Beth-diblathaim, 23and cjKiriathaim, and Beth-gamul, and ckBeth-meon, 24and clKerioth, and cmBozrah, and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 cnThe horn of Moab is cut off, and cohis arm is broken, declares the Lord.

26 cp“Make him drunk, cqbecause he magnified himself against the Lord, so that Moab shall crwallow in his vomit, csand he too shall be held in derision. 27 ctWas not Israel a derision to you? cuWas he found among thieves, that whenever you spoke of him cvyou wagged your head?

28 cwLeave the cities, and dwell in the rock,
O inhabitants of Moab!
Be cxlike the dove that nests
in the sides of the mouth of a gorge.
29 cyWe have heard of the pride of Moab
he is very proud
of his loftiness, his pride, and his arrogance,
and the haughtiness of his heart.
30I know his insolence, declares the Lord;
czhis boasts are false,
his deeds are false.
31 daTherefore I wail for Moab;
I cry out for all Moab;
for the men of dbKir-hareseth I mourn.
32More than for dcJazer I weep for you,
ddO vine of deSibmah!
dfYour branches passed over the sea,
reached to the Sea of dgJazer;
on your summer fruits and your grapes
the destroyer has fallen.
33 dhGladness and joy have been taken away
from the fruitful land of Moab;
I have made the wine cease from the winepresses;
no one treads them with shouts of joy;
the shouting is not the shout of joy.
34 diFrom the outcry at Heshbon even to Elealeh, as far as Jahaz they utter their voice, from Zoar to djHoronaim and Eglath-shelishiyah. For the waters of Nimrim also have become desolate. 35And I will bring to an end in Moab, declares the Lord, him who offers sacrifice in dkthe high place and makes offerings to his god. 36Therefore my heart moans for Moab like a flute, and my heart moans like a flute for the men of dlKir-hareseth. dmTherefore the riches they gained have perished.

37 dnFor every head is shaved and every beard cut off. doOn all the hands are gashes, and dparound the waist is sackcloth. 38On all the housetops of Moab and in the squares there is nothing but lamentation, for I have broken Moab like dqa vessel for which no one cares, declares the Lord. 39How it is broken! How they wail! drHow Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab dshas become a derision and a horror to all that are around him.”

40 For thus says the Lord:
Behold, dtone shall fly swiftly like an eagle
duand spread his wings against Moab;
41 dvthe cities shall be taken
and the strongholds seized.
dwThe heart of the warriors of Moab shall be in that day
like the heart of dxa woman in her birth pains;
42Moab shall be dydestroyed and be no longer a people,
because dzhe magnified himself against the Lord.
43 eaTerror, pit, and snare
are before you, O inhabitant of Moab!

declares the Lord.
44He who flees from the terror
shall fall into the pit,
and he who climbs out of the pit
shall be caught in the snare.
ebFor I will bring these things upon Moab,
the year of their punishment,

declares the Lord.
45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
fugitives stop without strength,
for fire came out from Heshbon,
flame from the house of Sihon;
it has destroyed ecthe forehead of Moab,
the crown of edthe sons of tumult.
46 eeWoe to you, O Moab!
The people of efChemosh are undone,
for your sons have been taken captive,
and your daughters into captivity.
47 egYet I will restore the fortunes of Moab
in the latter days, declares the Lord.”
Thus far is the judgment on Moab.
