Jeremiah 21

Jerusalem Will Fall to Nebuchadnezzar

1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, when King Zedekiah sent to him aPashhur the son of Malchiah and bZephaniah the priest, the son of cMaaseiah, saying, 2 dInquire of the Lord for us, efor Nebuchadnezzar
Hebrew Nebuchadrezzar, an alternate spelling of  Nebuchadnezzar (king of Babylon) occurring frequently from Jeremiah 21–52; this latter spelling is used throughout Jeremiah for consistency
king of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to gall his wonderful deeds and will make him withdraw from us.”

3Then Jeremiah said to them: “Thus you shall say to Zedekiah, 4Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: hBehold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands and with which you are fighting against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls. iAnd I will bring them together into the midst of this city. 5I myself will fight against you jwith outstretched hand and strong arm, kin anger and in fury and in great wrath. 6And I will strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast. They shall die of a great pestilence. 7Afterward, declares the Lord, lI will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people in this city who survive the pestilence, sword, and famine into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek their lives. He shall strike them down with the edge of the sword. mHe shall not pity them or spare them or have compassion.’

8“And to this people you shall say: nThus says the Lord: Behold, oI set before you the way of life and the way of death. 9He who stays in this city shall die pby the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out and qsurrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you shall live rand shall have his life as a prize of war. 10For sI have set my face against this city for harm and tnot for good, declares the Lord: uit shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.’

Message to the House of David

11“And to the house of the king of Judah say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord, 12O house of David! Thus says the Lord:

v“‘Execute justice win the morning,
and deliver from the hand of the oppressor
him who has been robbed,
xlest my wrath go forth like fire,
and burn with none to quench it,
because of your evil deeds.’”
13 yBehold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley,
O rock of the plain,

declares the Lord;
you who say, zWho shall come down against us,
or who shall enter our habitations?’
14 aaI will punish you according to abthe fruit of your deeds,

declares the Lord;
acI will kindle a fire in her forest,
adand it shall devour all that is around her.”

Jeremiah 30

Restoration for Israel and Judah

1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: aeWrite in a book all the words that I have spoken to you. 3 afFor behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, agwhen I will restore ahthe fortunes of my people, aiIsrael and Judah, says the Lord, ajand I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall take possession of it.”

4These are the words that the Lord spoke concerning akIsrael and Judah:

5 Thus says the Lord:
We have heard a cry of panic,
of terror, and no peace.
6Ask now, and see,
can a man bear a child?
alWhy then do I see every man
with his hands on his stomach amlike a woman in labor?
anWhy has every face turned pale?
7Alas! aoThat day is so great
apthere is none like it;
it is a time of distress for Jacob;
yet he shall be saved out of it.
8“And it shall come to pass in that day, declares the Lord of hosts, that I will aqbreak his aryoke from off your neck, and I will asburst your bonds, atand foreigners shall no more make a servant of him.
Or serve him
9But they shall serve the Lord their God and avDavid their king, whom I will raise up for them.

10 aw“Then fear not, axO Jacob my servant, declares the Lord,
nor be dismayed, O Israel;
for behold, ayI will save you from far away,
azand your offspring from the land of their captivity.
baJacob shall return and have quiet and ease,
and none shall make him afraid.
11 bbFor I am with you to save you,

declares the Lord;
bcI will make a full end of all the nations
among whom I scattered you,
but of you I will not make a full end.
bdI will bediscipline you in just measure,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.
12 For thus says the Lord:
bfYour hurt is incurable,
bgand your wound is grievous.
13There is none to uphold your cause,
no medicine for your wound,
bhno healing for you.
14 biAll your lovers have forgotten you;
they care nothing for you;
for I have dealt you the blow of bjan enemy,
the punishment bkof a merciless foe,
because your guilt is great,
blbecause your sins are flagrant.
15 bmWhy do you cry out over your hurt?
bnYour pain is incurable.
Because your guilt is great,
bobecause your sins are flagrant,
I have done these things to you.
16 bpTherefore all who devour you shall be devoured,
and bqall your foes, every one of them, shall go into captivity;
brthose who plunder you shall be plundered,
bsand all who prey on you I will make a prey.
17 btFor I will restore buhealth to you,
and bvyour wounds I will heal,

declares the Lord,
because bwthey have called you an outcast:
bx‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’
18 Thus says the Lord:
Behold, byI will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob
and have compassion on his dwellings;
the city shall be rebuilt on bzits mound,
and the palace shall stand where it used to be.
19 caOut of them shall come songs of thanksgiving,
and the voices of those who celebrate.
cbI will multiply them, and they shall not be few;
I will make them honored, and they shall not be small.
20 ccTheir children shall be as they were of old,
and their congregation shall be established before me,
and I will punish all who oppress them.
21 cdTheir prince shall be one of themselves;
cetheir ruler shall come out from their midst;
cfI will make him draw near, and he shall approach me,
cgfor who would dare of himself to approach me?

declares the Lord.
22 chAnd you shall be my people,
and I will be your God.”
23 ciBehold cjthe storm of the Lord!
Wrath has gone forth,
a whirling tempest;
it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
24 ckThe fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back
until he has executed and accomplished
the intentions of his mind.
clIn the latter days you will understand this.
