22 cBut if they had stood in my council,
then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,
dand they would have turned them from their evil way,
and efrom the evil of their deeds.

Ezekiel 34:2-6

2 fSon of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them, even to the shepherds, Thus says the Lord God: gAh, shepherds of Israel hwho have been feeding yourselves! iShould not shepherds feed the sheep? 3 jYou eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, kyou slaughter the fat ones, but you do not feed the sheep. 4 lThe weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, mthe injured you have not bound up, nthe strayed you have not brought back, othe lost you have not sought, and with force and pharshness you have ruled them. 5 qSo they were scattered, because there was no shepherd, and rthey became food for all the wild beasts. My sheep were scattered; 6they wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My sheep were scattered over all the face of the earth, swith none to search or seek for them.

Ezekiel 34:16

16 tI will seek the lost, uand I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and vthe fat and the strong I will destroy.
Septuagint, Syriac, Vulgate  I will watch over
I will feed them in justice.

Matthew 23:2-4

2 x“The scribes and the Pharisees ysit on Mosesseat, 3so do and observe whatever they tell you, zbut not the works they do. aaFor they preach, but do not practice. 4 abThey tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,
Some manuscripts omit  hard to bear
and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.

Matthew 23:13-29

13But woe adto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you aeshut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you afneither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.
Some manuscripts add here (or after verse 12) verse 14: Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses and for a pretense you make long prayers; therefore you will receive the greater condemnation
15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single ahproselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a aichild of ajhell

as yourselves.

16Woe to alyou, amblind guides, who say, anIf anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ 17You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or aothe temple that has made the gold sacred? 18And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by apthe gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ 19You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or aqthe altar that makes the gift sacred? 20So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by arhim who dwells in it. 22And whoever swears by asheaven swears by atthe throne of God and by auhim who sits upon it.

23 avWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For awyou tithe mint and dill and axcumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: ayjustice and mercy and faithfulness. azThese you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 24You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing baa camel!

25 bbWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For bcyou clean the outside of bdthe cup and the plate, but inside they are full of begreed and self-indulgence. 26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of bfthe cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

27 bgWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like bhwhitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and biall uncleanness. 28So you also bjoutwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of bkhypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 blWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,
