Jeremiah 23:8-17

8but ‘As the Lord lives who brought up and led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he
Septuagint; Hebrew I
had driven them.’ Then they shall dwell in their own land.”

Lying Prophets

9Concerning the prophets:

bMy heart is broken within me;
call my bones shake;
I am like a drunken man,
like a man overcome by wine,
because of the Lord
and because of his holy words.
10 dFor the land is full of adulterers;
ebecause of the curse fthe land mourns,
and gthe pastures of the wilderness are dried up.
hTheir course is evil,
and their might is not right.
11 iBoth prophet and priest are ungodly;
even jin my house I have found their evil,

declares the Lord.
12 kTherefore their way shall be to them
like slippery paths lin the darkness,
into which they shall be driven and fall,
for I will bring disaster upon them
min the year of their punishment,

declares the Lord.
13In the prophets of nSamaria
oI saw an unsavory thing:
pthey prophesied by Baal
qand led my people Israel astray.
14But in the prophets of Jerusalem
I have seen a horrible thing:
rthey commit adultery and walk in lies;
sthey strengthen the hands of evildoers,
so that no one turns from his evil;
tall of them have become like Sodom to me,
uand its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”
15Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets:
vBehold, I will feed them with bitter food
wand give them xpoisoned water to drink,
for from the prophets of Jerusalem
ungodliness has gone out into all the land.”
16Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, yfilling you with vain hopes. zThey speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. 17They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, aa‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who abstubbornly follows his own heart, they say, acNo disaster shall come upon you.’”

Jeremiah 44:14-17

14 adso that none of the remnant of Judah who have come to live in the land of Egypt shall escape or survive aeor return to the land of Judah, to which they desire to return to dwell there. For they shall not return, afexcept some fugitives.”

15Then all the men who knew that agtheir wives had made offerings to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, all the people who lived in ahPathros in the land of Egypt, answered Jeremiah: 16“As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, aiwe will not listen to you. 17 ajBut we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to akthe queen of heaven aland pour out drink offerings to her, amas we did, both we and our fathers, our kings and our officials, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no disaster.
