Jeremiah 25:15

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath

15Thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: aTake from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it.

Jeremiah 25:22

22all the kings of bTyre, all the kings of cSidon, and the kings of the coastland across dthe sea;

Jeremiah 47:4

4because of the day that is coming to destroy
all ethe Philistines,
to cut off from fTyre and Sidon
every helper that remains.
For the Lord is destroying the Philistines,
gthe remnant of the coastland of hCaphtor.

Ezekiel 26

Prophecy Against Tyre

1 iIn the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 jSon of man, because kTyre said concerning Jerusalem, lAha, the gate of the peoples is broken; it has swung open to me. I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste,’ 3therefore thus says the Lord God: mBehold, I am against you, O Tyre, and will bring up nmany nations against you, oas the sea brings up its waves. 4They shall destroy the walls of Tyre and break down her towers, and I will scrape her soil from her and pmake her a bare rock. 5She qshall be in the midst of the sea a place for the spreading of nets, rfor I have spoken, declares the Lord God. And she shall become plunder for the nations, 6and her daughters on the mainland shall be killed by the sword. sThen they will know that I am the Lord.

7For thus says the Lord God: tBehold, I will bring against Tyre ufrom the north Nebuchadnezzar
Hebrew Nebuchadrezzar; so throughout Ezekiel
king of Babylon, wking of kings, with horses and chariots, and with horsemen and a host of many soldiers.
8He will kill with the sword xyour daughters on the mainland. yHe will set up a siege wall against you and throw up a mound against you, and raise za roof of shields against you. 9 aaHe will direct the shock of his battering rams against your walls, and with his axes he will break down your towers. 10His horses will be so many that their dust will cover you. Your walls will shake at the noise of the horsemen and wagons and chariots, when he enters your gates as men enter a city that has been breached. 11With the hoofs of his horses he will trample all your streets. He will kill your people with the sword, and your mighty pillars will fall to the ground. 12They will plunder abyour riches and loot acyour merchandise. They will break down your walls and destroy your pleasant houses. Your stones and timber and adsoil they will cast into the midst of the waters. 13 aeAnd I will stop the music of your songs, and afthe sound of your lyres shall be heard no more. 14 agI will make you a bare rock. ahYou shall be a place for the spreading of nets. You shall never be rebuilt, aifor I am the Lord; I have spoken, declares the Lord God.

15Thus says the Lord God to Tyre: Will not ajthe coastlands shake at the sound of your fall, akwhen the wounded groan, when slaughter is made in your midst? 16Then all althe princes of the sea will step down from their thrones and amremove their robes and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; anthey will sit on the ground and aotremble every moment and apbe appalled at you. 17And they will aqraise a lamentation over you and say to you,

“‘How you have perished,
you who were inhabited from the seas,
O city renowned,
arwho was mighty on the sea;
she and her inhabitants asimposed their terror
on all her inhabitants!
18Now the coastlands tremble
on the day of your fall,
and the coastlands that are on the sea
are dismayed at your passing.’
19For thus says the Lord God: When I make you a city laid waste, like the cities that are not inhabited, atwhen I bring up the deep over you, and the great waters cover you, 20then auI will make you go down with those who go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you to dwell in the world below, among ruins from of old, avwith those who go down to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited; but I will set beauty awin the land of the living. 21I will bring you axto a dreadful end, and you shall be no more. ayThough you be sought for, you will never be found again, declares the Lord God.”

Ezekiel 27

A Lament for Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2“Now you, azson of man, baraise a lamentation over Tyre, 3and say to Tyre, who dwells at bbthe entrances to the sea, bcmerchant of the peoples to many coastlands, thus says the Lord God:

“O Tyre, you have said,
I am bdperfect in beauty.’
4Your borders are bein the heart of the seas;
your builders made perfect your beauty.
5They made all your planks
of fir trees from bfSenir;
they took bga cedar from Lebanon
to make a mast for you.
6Of bhoaks of Bashan
they made your oars;
they made your deck of pines
from bithe coasts of Cyprus,
inlaid with ivory.
7 bjOf fine embroidered linen from Egypt
was your sail,
serving as your banner;
blue and purple from bkthe coasts of Elishah
was your awning.
8The inhabitants of Sidon and blArvad
were your rowers;
your skilled men, O Tyre, were in you;
they were bmyour pilots.
9The elders of bnGebal and her skilled men were in you,
bocaulking your seams;
all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you
to barter for your wares.
10 bpPersia and bqLud and brPut were in your army as your men of war. bsThey hung the shield and helmet in you; they gave you splendor. 11Men of btArvad and Helech were on your walls all around, and men of Gamad were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they made buperfect your beauty.

12 bvTarshish did bwbusiness with you because of your great wealth of every kind; silver, iron, tin, and lead they exchanged for your bxwares. 13 byJavan, bzTubal, and caMeshech traded with you; they exchanged human beings and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. 14From cbBeth-togarmah they exchanged horses, war horses, and mules ccfor your wares. 15The men of cdDedan
Hebrew; Septuagint Rhodes
traded with you. Many coastlands were your own special markets; they brought you in payment ivory tusks and ebony.
16Syria cfdid business with you because of your abundant goods; they exchanged for your wares cgemeralds, chpurple, ciembroidered work, cjfine linen, coral, and ckruby. 17Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged for your merchandise clwheat of cmMinnith, meal,
The meaning of the Hebrew word is unknown
honey, oil, and cobalm.
18 cpDamascus did business with you for your abundant goods, because of your great wealth of every kind; wine of Helbon and cqwool of Sahar 19and casks of wine
Probable reading; Hebrew  wool of Sahar, Vedan, and Javan
from Uzal they exchanged for your wares; wrought iron, cscassia, and ctcalamus were bartered for your merchandise.
20Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. 21Arabia and all the princes of cuKedar were your favored dealers cvin lambs, rams, and goats; in these they did business with you. 22The traders of cwSheba and cxRaamah traded with you; they exchanged cyfor your wares czthe best of all kinds of spices and all precious stones and gold. 23 daHaran, Canneh, dbEden, traders of Sheba, dcAsshur, and Chilmad traded with you. 24In your market these traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of ddblue and deembroidered work, and in carpets of colored material, bound with cords and made secure. 25 dfThe ships of dgTarshish traveled for you with your merchandise. So you were filled and heavily laden dhin the heart of the seas.

26 “Your rowers have brought you out
into the high seas.
diThe east wind has wrecked you
in the heart of the seas.
27Your riches, your wares, your merchandise,
your mariners and djyour pilots,
dkyour caulkers, your dealers in merchandise,
and all your men of war who are in you,
with all your crew
that is in your midst,
sink into the heart of the seas
dlon the day of your fall.
28At the sound of the cry of your pilots
dmthe countryside shakes,
29and down from their ships
dncome all who handle the oar.
The mariners and all the pilots of the sea
stand on the land
30 doand shout aloud over you
and cry out bitterly.
dpThey cast dust on their heads
dqand wallow in ashes;
31they drmake themselves bald for you
and put sackcloth on their waist,
and they weep over you in bitterness of soul,
with bitter mourning.
32In their wailing they dsraise a lamentation for you
and lament over you:
dtWho is like Tyre,
like one destroyed in the midst of the sea?
33When your wares came from the seas,
duyou satisfied many peoples;
with your abundant wealth and merchandise
dvyou enriched the kings of the earth.
34Now dwyou are wrecked by the seas,
in the depths of the waters;
your merchandise and all your crew in your midst
have sunk with you.
35 dxAll the inhabitants of the coastlands
are appalled at you,
and dythe hair of their kings bristles with horror;
their faces are convulsed.
36 dzThe merchants among the peoples eahiss at you;
ebyou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.’”

Ezekiel 28:1-25

Prophecy Against the Prince of Tyre

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 ecSon of man, say to edthe prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord God:

ee“Because your heart is proud,
and efyou have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods,
in the heart of the seas,’
yet egyou are but a man, and no god,
ehthough you make your heart like the heart of a god
3 eiyou are indeed wiser ejthan ekDaniel;
no secret is hidden from you;
4by your wisdom and your understanding
elyou have made wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
into your treasuries;
5by your great wisdom in your trade
you have increased your wealth,
and emyour heart has become proud in your wealth
6therefore thus says the Lord God:
enBecause you make your heart
like the heart of a god,
7therefore, behold, I will bring eoforeigners upon you,
the most ruthless of the nations;
and they shall draw their swords against epthe beauty of your wisdom
and defile eqyour splendor.
8 erThey shall thrust you down into the pit,
esand you shall die the death of the slain
in the heart of the seas.
9 etWill you still say, ‘I am a god,’
in the presence of those who kill you,
though euyou are but a man, and no god,
in the hands of those who slay you?
10 evYou shall die the death of the uncircumcised
by the hand of foreigners;
ewfor I have spoken, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament over the King of Tyre

11Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me: 12 exSon of man, eyraise a lamentation over ezthe king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord God:

“You were the signet of perfection,
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

fbfull of wisdom and fcperfect in beauty.
13You were in fdEden, the garden of God;
feevery precious stone was your covering,
ffsardius, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire,
Or lapis lazuli
fhemerald, and carbuncle;
and crafted in gold were your settings
and your engravings.
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain

fjOn the day that you were created
they were prepared.
14You were an anointed fkguardian cherub.
I placed you;
The meaning of the Hebrew phrase is uncertain
you were on fmthe holy mountain of God;
in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15You were blameless in your ways
fnfrom the day you were created,
till unrighteousness was found in you.
16In the abundance of foyour trade
you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from fpthe mountain of God,
and I destroyed you,
Or banished you
frO guardian cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17 fsYour heart was proud because of ftyour beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you.
18By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your trade
you profaned your sanctuaries;
so fuI brought fire out from your midst;
it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
fvin the sight of all who saw you.
19All who know you among the peoples
are appalled at you;
fwyou have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.”

Prophecy Against Sidon

20The word of the Lord came to me: 21 fxSon of man, fyset your face toward fzSidon, and gaprophesy against her 22and say, Thus says the Lord God:

Behold, gbI am against you, O Sidon,
and gcI will manifest my glory in your midst.
And gdthey shall know that I am the Lord
gewhen I execute judgments in her
and gfmanifest my holiness in her;
23for I will send ggpestilence into her,
and blood into her streets;
and the slain shall fall in her midst,
by the sword that is against her on every side.
Then they will know that I am the Lord.
24“And for the house of Israel ghthere shall be no more a brier to prick or gia thorn to hurt them among all their neighbors gjwho have treated them with contempt. Then they will know that I am the Lord God.

Israel Gathered in Security

25Thus says the Lord God: gkWhen I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and glmanifest my holiness in them in the sight of the nations, gmthen they shall dwell in their own land that I gave to my servant Jacob.

Joel 3:4-8

4What are you to me, gnO Tyre and Sidon, and all gothe regions of Philistia? Are you paying me back for something? If you are paying me back, gpI will return your payment on your own head swiftly and speedily. 5For gqyou have taken my silver and my gold, and have carried my rich treasures into your temples.
Or palaces
6You have sold gsthe people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks in order to remove them far from their own border. 7Behold, I will stir them up from the place to which you have sold them, and gtI will return your payment on your own head. 8I will sell your sons and your daughters into the hand of the people of Judah, and they will sell them to the guSabeans, to a nation far away, for the Lord has spoken.”

Amos 1:9-10

9Thus says the Lord:

gv“For three transgressions of gwTyre,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
because they delivered up a whole people to Edom,
and did not remember the covenant of brotherhood.
10So I will send a fire upon the wall of gxTyre,
and it shall devour her strongholds.”
