Jeremiah 25:19

19 aPharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people,

Jeremiah 43:8-13

8Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in bTahpanhes: 9Take in your hands large stones and hide them in the mortar in the pavement that is at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in cTahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah, 10and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, dmy servant, eand I will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden, and he will spread his royal canopy over them. 11He shall come fand strike the land of Egypt, ggiving over to the pestilence those who are doomed to the pestilence, to captivity those who are doomed to captivity, and to the sword those who are doomed to the sword. 12 hI shall kindle a fire iin the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them jand carry them away captive. kAnd he shall clean the land of Egypt las a shepherd cleans his cloak of vermin, and he shall go away from there in peace. 13He shall break the mobelisks of Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt, nand the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.’”

Jeremiah 44:29-30

29This shall be the sign to you, declares the Lord, that I will punish you in this place, in order that you may know that omy words will surely stand against you for harm: 30Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will give pPharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies qand into the hand of those who seek his life, as I gave rZedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy and sought his life.”

Jeremiah 46

Judgment on Egypt

1The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet sconcerning the nations.

2About Egypt. tConcerning the army of Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates at Carchemish and which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in uthe fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

3 vPrepare buckler and shield,
and advance for battle!
4 wHarness the horses;
mount, O horsemen!
Take your stations with your helmets,
xpolish your spears,
put on your armor!
5Why have I seen it?
They are dismayed
and have turned backward.
Their ywarriors are beaten down
and have fled in haste;
zthey look not back
aaterror on every side!

declares the Lord.
6 “The swift cannot flee away,
nor the warrior escape;
abin the north by the river Euphrates
acthey have stumbled and fallen.
7 Who is this, adrising like the Nile,
like rivers aewhose waters surge?
8Egypt rises like the Nile,
like rivers afwhose waters surge.
He said, ‘I will rise, I will cover the earth,
I will destroy cities and their inhabitants.’
9 agAdvance, O horses,
and rage, O chariots!
Let the warriors go out:
men of Cush and ahPut who handle the shield,
aimen of Lud, skilled in handling the bow.
10 ajThat day is the day of the Lord God of hosts,
aka day of vengeance,
alto avenge himself on his foes.
amThe sword shall devour and be sated
and drink its fill of their blood.
For the Lord God of hosts holds ana sacrifice
aoin the north country apby the river Euphrates.
11 aqGo up to Gilead, and take arbalm,
O virgin daughter of Egypt!
In vain you have used many medicines;
asthere is no healing for you.
12The nations have heard of your shame,
and the earth is full of your cry;
atfor warrior has stumbled against warrior;
they have both fallen together.”
13The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of auNebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to strike the land of Egypt:

14 Declare in Egypt, and proclaim in avMigdol;
proclaim in awMemphis and axTahpanhes;
say, ayStand ready and be prepared,
for azthe sword shall devour around you.’
15Why are your mighty ones face down?
They do not stand
Hebrew He does not stand

because the Lord thrust them down.
16He made many stumble, bband they fell,
and they said one to another,
Arise, and let us go back to our own people
and to the land of our birth,
bcbecause of the sword of the oppressor.’
17Call the name of bdPharaoh, king of Egypt,
Noisy one who lets the hour go by.’
18 be“As I live, declares the King,
bfwhose name is the Lord of hosts,
like bgTabor among the mountains
and like bhCarmel by the sea, shall one come.
19 biPrepare yourselves baggage for exile,
O bjinhabitants of Egypt!
For bkMemphis shall become a waste,
a ruin, blwithout inhabitant.
20 “A beautiful bmheifer is Egypt,
but a biting fly bnfrom the north has come upon her.
21Even her hired soldiers in her midst
are like bofattened calves;
yes, they have turned and fled together;
they did not stand,
for the day of their calamity has come upon them,
bpthe time of their punishment.
22 “She makes bqa sound like a serpent gliding away;
for her enemies march in force
and come against her with axes
brlike those who fell trees.
23 bsThey shall cut down her forest,

declares the Lord,
though it is impenetrable,
because btthey are more numerous than locusts;
they are without number.
24The daughter of Egypt shall be put to shame;
she shall be delivered into the hand of bua people from the north.”
25The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, said: “Behold, I am bringing punishment upon bvAmon of bwThebes, and Pharaoh and Egypt bxand her gods and her kings, upon Pharaoh and those who trust in him. 26 byI will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their life, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. bzAfterward Egypt shall be inhabited caas in the days of old, declares the Lord.

27 cb“But fear not, O Jacob my servant,
nor be dismayed, O Israel,
for behold, I will save you from far away,
and your offspring from the land of their captivity.
Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease,
and none shall make him afraid.
28 ccFear not, O Jacob my servant,

declares the Lord,
for I am with you.
I will make a full end of all the nations
to which I have driven you,
but of you I will not make a full end.
cdI will discipline you in just measure,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.”

Ezekiel 29

Prophecy Against Egypt

1 ceIn the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 cfSon of man, cgset your face against chPharaoh king of Egypt, ciand prophesy against him and cjagainst all Egypt; 3speak, and say, Thus says the Lord God:

ckBehold, I am against you,
Pharaoh king of Egypt,
clthe great dragon that lies
in the midst of his streams,
cmthat says, ‘My Nile is my own;
I made it for myself.’
4I will cnput hooks in your jaws,
and make the fish of your streams stick to your scales;
and I will draw you up out of the midst of your streams,
with all the fish of your streams
that stick to your scales.
5 coAnd I will cast you out into the wilderness,
you and all the fish of your streams;
you shall fall cpon the open field,
and cqnot be brought together or gathered.
To the beasts of the earth and to the birds of the heavens
crI give you as food.
6Then all the inhabitants of Egypt csshall know that I am the Lord.

Because you
Hebrew they
have been cua staff of reed to the house of Israel,
7 cvwhen they grasped you with the hand, you broke and tore all their shoulders; and when they leaned on you, you broke and made all their loins to shake.
Syriac (compare Psalm 69:23); Hebrew to stand
8Therefore thus says the Lord God: cxBehold, I will bring a sword upon you, and will cut off from you man and beast, 9and the land of Egypt shall be a desolation and a waste. cyThen they will know that I am the Lord.

czBecause you
Hebrew he
said, ‘The Nile is mine, and I made it,’
10therefore, dbbehold, I am against you and dcagainst your streams, and ddI will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, defrom Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Cush. 11 dfNo foot of man shall pass through it, and no foot of beast shall pass through it; it shall be uninhabited forty years. 12 dgAnd I will make the land of Egypt a desolation in the midst of desolated countries, and her cities shall be a desolation forty years among cities that are laid waste. dhI will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them through the countries.

13“For thus says the Lord God: At the end of forty years diI will gather the Egyptians from the peoples among whom they were scattered, 14and djI will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to dkthe land of Pathros, the land of their origin, and there they shall be a lowly kingdom. 15It shall be the most lowly of the kingdoms, dland never again exalt itself above the nations. And I will make them so small that they will never again rule over the nations. 16And it shall never again be dmthe reliance of the house of Israel, recalling their iniquity, when they turn to them for aid. dnThen they will know that I am the Lord God.”

17 doIn the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 18 dpSon of man, dqNebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made his army labor hard against Tyre. Every head was made bald, and every shoulder was rubbed bare, yet neither he nor his army got anything from Tyre to pay for the labor that he had performed against her. 19Therefore thus says the Lord God: drBehold, I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; dsand he shall carry off its wealth
Or multitude
duand despoil it and plunder it; and it shall be the wages for his army.
20 dvI have given him the land of Egypt as his payment for which he labored, because they worked for me, declares the Lord God.

21“On that day dwI will cause a horn to spring up for the house of Israel, and dxI will open your lips among them. dyThen they will know that I am the Lord.”

Ezekiel 30

A Lament for Egypt

1The word of the Lord came to me: 2 dzSon of man, prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God:

eaWail, ‘Alas for the day!’
3 ebFor the day is near,
ecthe day of the Lord is near;
it will be eda day of clouds,
a time of doom for
Hebrew lacks  doom for
the nations.
4 efA sword shall come upon Egypt,
egand anguish shall be in ehCush,
when the slain fall in Egypt,
and eiher wealth
Or multitude; also verse 10
is carried away,
and ekher foundations are torn down.
5 elCush, and emPut, and Lud, and enall Arabia, and Libya,
With Septuagint; Hebrew Cub
and the people of the land that is in league,
Hebrew  and the sons of the land of the covenant
shall fall with them by the sword.

6 Thus says the Lord:
eqThose who support Egypt shall fall,
and erher proud might shall come down;
esfrom Migdol to Syene
they shall fall within her by the sword,
declares the Lord God.
7 etAnd they shall be desolated in the midst of desolated countries,
and their cities shall be in the midst of cities that are laid waste.
8 euThen they will know that I am the Lord,
when evI have set fire to Egypt,
and ewall her helpers are broken.
9“On that day exmessengers shall go out from me in ships to terrify the unsuspecting eypeople of Cush, and ezanguish shall come upon them on the day of Egypt’s doom;
Hebrew  the day of Egypt
for, behold, it comes!

10Thus says the Lord God:

fb“I will put an end to the wealth of Egypt,
by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
11He and his people with him, fcthe most ruthless of nations,
shall be brought in to destroy the land,
fdand they shall draw their swords against Egypt
and fill the land with the slain.
12And feI will ffdry up the Nile
and will sell the land into the hand of fgevildoers;
fhI will bring desolation upon the land and everything in it,
by the hand of fiforeigners;
fjI am the Lord; I have spoken.
13Thus says the Lord God:

fk“I will destroy the idols
and put an end to the images in flMemphis;
fmthere shall no longer be a prince from the land of Egypt;
so fnI will put fear in the land of Egypt.
14I will make foPathros a desolation
and will set fire to fpZoan
fqand will execute judgments on frThebes.
15And I will pour out my wrath on Pelusium,
the stronghold of Egypt,
and cut off the multitude
Or wealth
of Thebes.
16And I will set fire to Egypt;
Pelusium shall be in great agony;
Thebes shall be breached,
and ftMemphis shall face enemies
Or distress
by day.
17The young men of On and of Pi-beseth shall fall by the sword,
and the women
Or  the cities; Hebrew they
shall go into captivity.
18At fwTehaphnehes fxthe day shall be dark,
when I break there the yoke bars of Egypt,
and fyher proud might shall come to an end in her;
she shall be covered by a cloud,
and her daughters shall go into captivity.
19Thus fzI will execute judgments on Egypt.
gaThen they will know that I am the Lord.”

Egypt Shall Fall to Babylon

20 gbIn the eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 21 gcSon of man, gdI have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and behold, geit has not been bound up, to heal it by binding it with a bandage, so that it may become strong to wield the sword. 22Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt and gfwill break his arms, both the strong arm and the one that was broken, and I will make the sword fall from his hand. 23 ggI will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them through the countries. 24And ghI will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put gimy sword in his hand, but I will break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan before him gjlike a man mortally wounded. 25I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, but the arms of Pharaoh shall fall. gkThen they shall know that I am the Lord, glwhen I put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he stretches it out against the land of Egypt. 26And I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them throughout the countries. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”

Ezekiel 31

Pharaoh to Be Slain

1 gmIn the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 gnSon of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to gohis multitude:

gpWhom are you like in your greatness?
3Behold, gqAssyria was a grcedar in gsLebanon,
with beautiful branches and gtforest shade,
guand of towering height,
its top among the clouds.
Or  its top went through the thick boughs; also verses 10, 14

4The waters nourished it;
the deep made it grow tall,
making gwits rivers flow
around the place of its planting,
sending forth its streams
to all the trees of the field.
5So gxit towered high
above all the trees of the field;
its boughs grew large
and its branches long
from gyabundant water in its shoots.
6 gzAll the birds of the heavens
made their nests in its boughs;
under its branches all the beasts of the field
gave birth to their young,
and under its shadow
lived all great nations.
7It was habeautiful in its greatness,
in the length of its branches;
hbfor its roots went down
to abundant waters.
8 hcThe cedars hdin the garden of God could not rival it,
nor the fir trees equal its boughs;
neither were the plane trees
like its branches;
no tree hein the garden of God
was its equal in beauty.
9I made it beautiful
in the mass of its branches,
and all the trees of hfEden envied it,
that were in the garden of God.
10Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because hgit
Syriac, Vulgate; Hebrew you
towered high and set its top among the clouds, and hiits heart was proud of its height,
11I will give it into the hand of a mighty one of the nations. He shall surely deal with it as its wickedness deserves. I have cast it out. 12 hjForeigners, hkthe most ruthless of nations, have cut it down and left it. hlOn the mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen, and its boughs have been broken in all hmthe ravines of the land, and hnall the peoples of the earth have gone away from its shadow and left it. 13 hoOn its fallen trunk dwell all the birds of the heavens, and on its branches are all the beasts of the field. 14 hpAll this is in order that no trees by the waters may grow to towering height or set their tops among the clouds, and that no trees that drink water may reach up to them in height. For they are all given over to death, hqto the world hrbelow, among the children of man,
Or  of Adam
with those who go down to the pit.

15Thus says the Lord God: On the day htthe cedar
Hebrew it
went down to Sheol I caused mourning; I closed the deep over it, and restrained its rivers, and many waters were stopped. I clothed Lebanon in gloom for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.
16 hvI made the nations quake at the sound of its fall, hwwhen I cast it down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit. hxAnd all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, hywere comforted in the world below. 17They also went down to Sheol with it, hzto those who are slain by the sword; yes, iathose who were its arm, ibwho lived under its shadow among the nations.

18 icWhom are you thus like in glory and in greatness idamong the trees of Eden? ieYou shall be brought down with ifthe trees of Eden to the world below. igYou shall lie among the uncircumcised, ihwith those who are slain by the sword.

ii“This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”

Ezekiel 32

A Lament over Pharaoh and Egypt

1 ijIn the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 2 ikSon of man, ilraise a lamentation over imPharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:

“You consider yourself ina lion of the nations,
but you are like ioa dragon ipin the seas;
iqyou burst forth in your rivers,
trouble the waters with your feet,
and foul their rivers.
3Thus says the Lord God:
irI will throw my net over you
with a host of ismany peoples,
and itthey will haul you up in my dragnet.
4And iuI will cast you on the ground;
on the open field I will fling you,
and will cause all the birds of the heavens to settle on you,
and I will gorge the beasts of the whole earth with you.
5I will strew your flesh ivupon the mountains
and fill the valleys with your carcass.
Hebrew  your height

6I will drench the land even to the mountains
with your flowing blood,
and the ravines will be full of you.
7 ixWhen I blot you out, iyI will cover the heavens
and make their stars dark;
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
and the moon shall not give its light.
8All the bright lights of heaven
will I make dark over you,
and izput darkness on your land,

declares the Lord God.
9“I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries that you have not known. 10 jaI will make many peoples appalled at you, and the hair of their kings shall bristle with horror because of you, when jbI brandish my sword before them. jcThey shall tremble every moment, every one for his own life, on the day of your downfall.

11For thus says the Lord God: jdThe sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you. 12I will cause jeyour multitude to fall by the swords of mighty ones, all of them jfmost ruthless of nations.

jg“They shall bring to ruin the pride of Egypt,
and all its multitude
Or wealth
shall perish.
13I will destroy all its beasts
from beside many waters;
jiand no foot of man shall trouble them anymore,
nor shall the hoofs of beasts trouble them.
14Then jjI will make their waters clear,
and cause their rivers to run like oil,

declares the Lord God.
15When I make the land of Egypt desolate,
and when the land jkis desolate of all that fills it,
when I strike down all who dwell in it,
then jlthey will know that I am the Lord.
16 jmThis is a lamentation that shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt, and over jnall her multitude, shall they chant it, declares the Lord God.”

17 joIn the twelfth year, in the twelfth month,
Hebrew lacks  in the twelfth month
on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me:
18 jqSon of man, jrwail over jsthe multitude of Egypt, and jtsend them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, juto the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit:

19 jvWhom do you surpass in beauty?
Go down and jwbe laid to rest with the uncircumcised.’
20They shall fall amid those jxwho are slain by the sword. Egypt
Hebrew She
is delivered to the sword; drag her away, and jzall her multitudes.
21The mighty chiefs kashall speak of them, kbwith their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, kcthe uncircumcised, kdslain by the sword.’

22 keAssyria is there, and all her company, kfits graves all around it, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, 23whose graves are set in kgthe uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, khwho spread terror kiin the land of the living.

24 kjElam is kkthere, and all her multitude around her grave; all of them klslain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised into kmthe world below, who spread their terror in the land of the living; and knthey bear their shame kowith those who go down to the pit. 25 kpThey have made her a bed among the slain with all her multitude, kqher graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for terror of them was spread in the land of the living, and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are placed among the slain.

26 krMeshech-Tubal is ksthere, and all her multitude, kther graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they spread their terror in the land of the living. 27And kuthey do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living. 28But as for you, you shall be broken kvand lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.

29 kwEdom is kxthere, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those who are killed by the sword; they lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.

30“The princes kyof the north are there, all of them, and all the kzSidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain, lafor all the terror that they caused by their might; they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and lbbear their shame with those who go down to the pit.

31“When Pharaoh sees them, he lcwill be comforted for ldall his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord God. 32 leFor I spread terror lfin the land of the living; and he shall be laid to rest among lgthe uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”

Joel 3:19

19 lhEgypt shall become a desolation
and liEdom a desolate wilderness,
ljfor the violence done to the people of Judah,
because they have shed innocent blood in their land.
