Jeremiah 25:9-38

9 abehold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the Lord, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, bmy servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, cand make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation. 10Moreover, dI will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, ethe grinding of the millstones and fthe light of the lamp. 11 gThis whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and hthese nations shall serve the king of Babylon iseventy years. 12Then after jseventy years are completed, kI will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, lthe land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the Lord, mmaking the land an everlasting waste. 13I will bring upon that land all the words that I have uttered against it, everything written nin this book, which Jeremiah prophesied against all the nations. 14 oFor many nations pand great kings shall make slaves even of them, qand I will recompense them according to their deeds and the work of their hands.”

The Cup of the Lord’s Wrath

15Thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: rTake from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of sthe sword that I am sending among them.”

17So I took the cup from the Lord’s hand, tand made all the nations to whom the Lord sent me drink it: 18 uJerusalem and the cities of Judah, its kings and officials, vto make them a desolation and a waste, a hissing and a curse, as at this day; 19 wPharaoh king of Egypt, his servants, his officials, all his people, 20and xall the mixed tribes among them; all the kings of ythe land of Uz and all the kings of zthe land of the Philistines ( aaAshkelon, abGaza, Ekron, and the remnant of acAshdod); 21 adEdom, aeMoab, and the sons of afAmmon; 22all the kings of agTyre, all the kings of ahSidon, and the kings of the coastland across aithe sea; 23 ajDedan, akTema, alBuz, and all who cut amthe corners of their hair; 24all the ankings of Arabia and all the kings of aothe mixed tribes who dwell in the desert; 25all the kings of Zimri, all the kings of apElam, and all the kings of aqMedia; 26all the kings of arthe north, far and near, one after another, and all the kingdoms of the world that are on the face of the earth. And after them the king of asBabylon
Hebrew Sheshach, a code name for Babylon
shall drink.

27“Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: auDrink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of avthe sword that I am sending among you.’

28“And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: awYou must drink! 29For behold, axI begin to work disaster at the city that is called by my name, and shall you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, ayfor I am summoning a sword against all the inhabitants of the earth, declares the Lord of hosts.’

30“You, therefore, shall prophesy against them all these words, and say to them:

az“‘The Lord will roar from on high,
and from his holy habitation utter his voice;
he will roar mightily against his fold,
baand shout, like those who tread grapes,
against all the inhabitants of the earth.
31The clamor will resound to the ends of the earth,
for bbthe Lord has an indictment against the nations;
bche is entering into judgment with all flesh,
and the wicked he will put to the sword,

declares the Lord.’
32 Thus says the Lord of hosts:
Behold, disaster is going forth
from nation to nation,
bdand a great tempest is stirring
befrom the farthest parts of the earth!
33 bf“And those pierced by the Lord on that day shall extend from one end of the earth to the other. bgThey shall not be lamented, bhor gathered, or buried; bithey shall be dung on the surface of the ground.

34 bjWail, bkyou shepherds, and cry out,
bland roll in ashes, you lords of the flock,
for the days of your slaughter and dispersion have come,
and you shall fall like a choice vessel.
35No refuge will remain bmfor the shepherds,
nor escape for the lords of the flock.
36A voice—the cry bnof the shepherds,
boand the wail of the lords of the flock!
For the Lord is laying waste their pasture,
37 bpand the peaceful folds are devastated
bqbecause of the fierce anger of the Lord.
38Like a lion brhe has left his lair,
for their land has become a waste
because of bsthe sword of the oppressor,
btand because of his fierce anger.”

Jeremiah 26:1-13

Jeremiah Threatened with Death

1 buIn the beginning of the reign of bvJehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the Lord: 2Thus says the Lord: bwStand in the court of the Lord’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the Lord bxall the words that I command you to speak to them; bydo not hold back a word. 3 bzIt may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, cathat I may relent of the disaster that I intend to do to them cbbecause of their evil deeds. 4You shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord: ccIf you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you, 5 cdand to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you ceurgently, cfthough you have not listened, 6then I will make this house cglike Shiloh, and I will make this city cha curse for all the nations of the earth.’”

7 ciThe priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the Lord. 8And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, then cjthe priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, “You shall die! 9Why have you prophesied in the name of the Lord, saying, ‘This house shall be cklike Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, clwithout inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the Lord.

10When cmthe officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the Lord and took their seat in the cnentry of the New Gate of the house of the Lord. 11Then cothe priests and the prophets said to the officials and to all the people, cpThis man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”

12Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, “The Lord sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. 13Now therefore cqmend your ways and your deeds, crand obey the voice of the Lord your God, csand the Lord will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you.
