Jeremiah 31:18-20

18I have heard aEphraim grieving,
‘You have disciplined me, and I was disciplined,
like an untrained calf;
bbring me back that I may be restored,
for you are the Lord my God.
19For after cI had turned away, I relented,
and after I was instructed, dI struck my thigh;
eI was ashamed, and I was confounded,
because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 fIs Ephraim my dear son?
gIs he my darling child?
For as often as I speak against him,
I do remember him still.
hTherefore my heart
Hebrew bowels
yearns for him;
I will surely have mercy on him,

declares the Lord.

Jonah 2:1-4

Jonah’s Prayer

1Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, 2saying,

j“I called out to the Lord, out of my distress,
and he answered me;
kout of the belly of Sheol I cried,
land you heard my voice.
3 mFor you cast me into the deep,
into the heart of the seas,
and the flood surrounded me;
nall your waves and your billows
passed over me.
4 oThen I said, ‘I am driven away
from your sight;
pyet I shall again look
upon your holy temple.’

Luke 18:7-14

7And adwill not God give justice to aehis elect, afwho cry to him day and night? ag, ahWill he delay long over them? 8I tell you, he will give justice to them aispeedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, ajwill he find faith on earth?”

The Pharisee and the Tax Collector

9He also told this parable to some akwho trusted alin themselves that they were righteous, amand treated others with contempt: 10Two men anwent up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11The Pharisee, aostanding by himself, prayed
Or  standing, prayed to himself
aqthus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
12 arI fast twice a week; asI give tithes of all that I get.’ 13But the tax collector, atstanding far off, auwould not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but avbeat his breast, saying, ‘God, awbe merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For axeveryone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
