Jeremiah 31:19-20

19For after aI had turned away, I relented,
and after I was instructed, bI struck my thigh;
cI was ashamed, and I was confounded,
because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20 dIs Ephraim my dear son?
eIs he my darling child?
For as often as I speak against him,
I do remember him still.
fTherefore my heart
Hebrew bowels
yearns for him;
I will surely have mercy on him,

declares the Lord.

And nbegin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the elders who were before the house.

Luke 18:13-14

13But the tax collector, sstanding far off, twould not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but ubeat his breast, saying, ‘God, vbe merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For weveryone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
