Jeremiah 38:19-23

19King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Judeans awho have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest I be handed over to them and they deal cruelly with me.” 20Jeremiah said, “You shall not be given to them. Obey now the voice of the Lord in what I say to you, band it shall be well with you, and your life shall be spared. 21But if you refuse to csurrender, this is the vision which the Lord has shown to me: 22Behold, all the women left in the house of the king of Judah were being led out to the officials of the king of Babylon and were saying,

d“‘Your trusted friends have deceived you
and prevailed against you;
now that your feet are sunk in the mud,
they turn away from you.’
23All your wives and eyour sons shall be led out to the Chaldeans, and you yourself shall not escape from their hand, but shall be seized by the king of Babylon, and this city shall be burned with fire.”

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: iIf you set your faces to enter Egypt jand go to live there, 16then the sword kthat you fear shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine of which you are afraid shall follow close after you to Egypt, land there you shall die.

The Destruction of Israel

1I saw the Lord standing beside
Or on
the altar, and he said:

uStrike the capitals until vthe thresholds wshake,
xand shatter them on the heads of all the people;
Hebrew  all of them

and those who are left of them I will kill with the sword;
znot one of them shall flee away;
not one of them shall escape.
2 aaIf they dig into Sheol,
from there shall my hand take them;
abif they climb up to heaven,
from there I will bring them down.
3If they hide themselves on acthe top of Carmel,
from there I will search them out and take them;
adand if they hide from my sight at the bottom of the sea,
there I will command the serpent, and it shall bite them.
4 aeAnd if they go into captivity before their enemies,
there I will command the sword, and it shall kill them;
afand I will fix my eyes upon them
for evil and not for good.”
