Jeremiah 49:7-22

Judgment on Edom

7Concerning aEdom.

Thus says the Lord of hosts:

b“Is wisdom no more in cTeman?
dHas counsel perished from the prudent?
eHas their wisdom vanished?
8 fFlee, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of gDedan!
For I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him,
hthe time when I punish him.
9 iIf grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave jgleanings?
kIf thieves came by night,
would they not destroy only enough for themselves?
10 lBut I have stripped Esau bare;
mI have uncovered his hiding places,
and he is not able to conceal himself.
His children are destroyed, and his brothers,
and his neighbors; and nhe is no more.
11 oLeave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive;
pand let your widows trust in me.”
12For thus says the Lord: qIf those who did not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, rwill you go unpunished? You shall not go unpunished, but you must drink. 13 sFor I have sworn by myself, declares the Lord, that tBozrah shall become ua horror, a taunt, a waste, and a curse, and all her cities shall be perpetual wastes.”

14 vI have heard a message from the Lord,
and an envoy has been sent among the nations:
w“Gather yourselves together and come against her,
and rise up for battle!
15For behold, I will make you small among the nations,
despised among mankind.
16The horror you inspire has deceived you,
and the pride of your heart,
you who live in the clefts of the rock,
Or  of Sela

who hold the height of the hill.
Though you ymake your nest as high as the eagle’s,
I will bring you down from there,

declares the Lord.
17 zEdom shall become a horror. aaEveryone who passes by it will be horrified aband will hiss because of all its disasters. 18 acAs when Sodom and Gomorrah and their adneighboring cities were overthrown, says the Lord, aeno man shall dwell there, afno man shall sojourn in her. 19 agBehold, ahlike a lion coming up from aithe jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him
Septuagint, Syriac them
run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. akFor who is like me? alWho will summon me? amWhat shepherd can stand before me?
20Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against anEdom and the purposes that he has formed against the inhabitants of aoTeman: apEven the little ones of the flock shall be dragged away. Surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate. 21At the sound of their fall aqthe earth shall tremble; the sound of their cry shall be heard at the Red Sea. 22Behold, arone shall mount up and fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings against asBozrah, and the heart of the warriors of Edom shall be in that day like the heart atof a woman in her birth pains.”

Lamentations 4:21-22

21 auRejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
you who dwell in avthe land of Uz;
but to you also awthe cup shall pass;
you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.
22 axThe punishment of your iniquity, O daughter of Zion, is accomplished;
he will keep you in exile no longer;
Or  he will not exile you again

but azyour iniquity, O daughter of Edom, he will punish;
he will uncover your sins.

Amos 1:11-12

11Thus says the Lord:

ba“For three transgressions of bbEdom,
and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,
bcbecause he pursued his brother with the sword
bdand cast off all pity,
beand his anger tore perpetually,
bfand he kept his wrath forever.
12So I will send a fire upon bgTeman,
and it shall devour the strongholds of bhBozrah.”

Edom Will Be Humbled

Thus says the Lord God biconcerning Edom:
bjWe have heard a report from the Lord,
and a messenger has been sent among the nations:
Rise up! Let us rise against her for battle!”

Obadiah 10-14

Edom’s Violence Against Jacob

10 bkBecause of the violence done to your brother Jacob,
shame shall cover you,
bland you shall be cut off forever.
11 bmOn the day that you stood aloof,
bnon the day that strangers carried off his wealth
and foreigners entered his gates
boand cast lots for Jerusalem,
you were like one of them.
12 bpBut do not gloat over the day of your brother
in the day of his misfortune;
bqdo not rejoice over the people of Judah
in the day of their ruin;
brdo not boast
Hebrew  do not enlarge your mouth

in the day of distress.
13 btDo not enter the gate of my people
in the day of their calamity;
budo not gloat over his disaster
in the day of his calamity;
bvdo not loot his wealth
in the day of his calamity.
14 bwDo not stand at the crossroads
to cut off his fugitives;
do not hand over his survivors
in the day of distress.
