Jeremiah 51:8-9

8 aSuddenly Babylon has fallen and been broken;
bwail for her!
cTake balm for her pain;
perhaps she may be healed.
9We would have healed Babylon,
but she was not healed.
dForsake her, and elet us go
each to his own country,
for fher judgment has reached up to heaven
and has been lifted up even to the skies.

Ezekiel 26:15-21

15Thus says the Lord God to Tyre: Will not gthe coastlands shake at the sound of your fall, hwhen the wounded groan, when slaughter is made in your midst? 16Then all ithe princes of the sea will step down from their thrones and jremove their robes and strip off their embroidered garments. They will clothe themselves with trembling; kthey will sit on the ground and ltremble every moment and mbe appalled at you. 17And they will nraise a lamentation over you and say to you,

“‘How you have perished,
you who were inhabited from the seas,
O city renowned,
owho was mighty on the sea;
she and her inhabitants pimposed their terror
on all her inhabitants!
18Now the coastlands tremble
on the day of your fall,
and the coastlands that are on the sea
are dismayed at your passing.’
19For thus says the Lord God: When I make you a city laid waste, like the cities that are not inhabited, qwhen I bring up the deep over you, and the great waters cover you, 20then rI will make you go down with those who go down to the pit, to the people of old, and I will make you to dwell in the world below, among ruins from of old, swith those who go down to the pit, so that you will not be inhabited; but I will set beauty tin the land of the living. 21I will bring you uto a dreadful end, and you shall be no more. vThough you be sought for, you will never be found again, declares the Lord God.”

11And acthe merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, 12cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.

14 “The fruit for which your soul longed
has gone from you,
and all your delicacies and your splendors
are lost to you,
never to be found again!”
15 aeThe merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, afwill stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,

16 Alas, alas, for the great city
agthat was clothed in fine linen,
in purple and scarlet,
adorned with gold,
with jewels, and with pearls!
17For ahin a single hour all this wealth aihas been laid waste.”
And ajall shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off
