Lying Prophets

13Then I said: “Ah, Lord God, behold, the prophets dsay to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.’” 14And the Lord said to me: “The eprophets are prophesying lies in my name. fI did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, gworthless divination, and hthe deceit of their own minds. 15Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although iI did not send them, and who say, jSword and famine shall not come upon this land’: kBy sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed.

Jeremiah 23:17

17They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, l‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who mstubbornly follows his own heart, they say, nNo disaster shall come upon you.’”

Jeremiah 27:14-18

14 oDo not listen to the words of the prophets who are saying to you, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon,’ pfor it is a lie that they are prophesying to you. 15I have not sent them, declares the Lord, but qthey are prophesying falsely in my name, with the result that I will drive you out and you will perish, you and the prophets who are prophesying to you.”

16Then I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: rDo not listen to the words of your prophets who are prophesying to you, saying, sBehold, the vessels of the Lord’s house will now shortly be brought back from Babylon,’ tfor it is a lie that they are prophesying to you. 17 uDo not listen to them; vserve the king of Babylon and live. Why should this city wbecome a desolation? 18If they are prophets, and if the word of the Lord is with them, then xlet them intercede with the Lord of hosts, ythat the vessels that are left in the house of the Lord, in the house of the king of Judah, and in Jerusalem may not go to Babylon.

Hananiah the False Prophet

1In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of zZedekiah king of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, Hananiah the son of aaAzzur, the prophet from abGibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord, in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying, 2Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: acI have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3 adWithin aetwo years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the Lord’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. 4I will also bring back to this place afJeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles from Judah who went to Babylon, declares the Lord, agfor I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.”

5Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord,

Jeremiah 28:10-17

10Then the prophet Hananiah took the ahyoke-bars from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke them. 11And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, aiThus says the Lord: ajEven so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of akall the nations within two years.” But Jeremiah the prophet went his way.

12Sometime after the prophet alHananiah had broken the yoke-bars from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: 13Go, tell Hananiah, ‘Thus says the Lord: You have broken wooden bars, but you have made in their place bars of iron. 14For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put upon the neck of all these nations aman iron yoke to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, anand they shall serve him, aofor I have given to him even the beasts of the field.’” 15And Jeremiah the prophet said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah, apthe Lord has not sent you, aqand you have made this people trust in a lie. 16Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will remove you from the face of the earth. This year you shall die, arbecause you have uttered rebellion against the Lord.’”

17In that same year, in the seventh month, the prophet Hananiah died.
