Jeremiah 6:16-17

16 Thus says the Lord:
Stand by the roads, and look,
and ask for athe ancient paths,
where the good way is; and walk in it,
band find rest for your souls.
But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
17 cI set watchmen over you, saying,
‘Pay attention to dthe sound of the trumpet!’
But they said, e‘We will not pay attention.’

18Then they said, fCome, let us make plots against Jeremiah, gfor the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. hCome, let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not pay attention to any of his words.”

Amos Accused

10Then Amaziah ithe priest of Bethel sent to jJeroboam king of Israel, saying, “Amos has kconspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. 11For thus Amos has said,

“‘Jeroboam shall die by the sword,
and lIsrael must go into exile
away from his land.’”
12And Amaziah said to Amos, m“O seer, go, flee away nto the land of Judah, and oeat bread there, and prophesy there, 13but pnever again prophesy at Bethel, for qit is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.”

14Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, rI was
Or am; twice in this verse
no prophet, nor a prophet’s son, but tI was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs.
15 uBut the Lord took me from following the flock, and the Lord said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’ 16 vNow therefore hear the word of the Lord.

You say, w‘Do not prophesy against Israel,
and xdo not preach against the house of yIsaac.’
17 zTherefore thus says the Lord:

“‘Your wife shall be a prostitute in the city,
and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword,
and your land aashall be divided up with a measuring line;
you yourself shall die in an unclean land,
and abIsrael shall surely go into exile away from its land.’”
