Lamentations 2

The Lord Has Destroyed Without Pity

1 How the Lord in his anger
has set the daughter of Zion dunder a cloud!
eHe has cast down from heaven to earth
the splendor of Israel;
he has not remembered fhis footstool
in the day of his anger.
2 The Lord ghas swallowed up hwithout mercy
all the habitations of Jacob;
in his wrath ihe has broken down
the strongholds of the daughter of Judah;
he has brought jdown to the ground kin dishonor
the kingdom land its rulers.
3 He has cut down in mfierce anger
all nthe might of Israel;
ohe has withdrawn from them his right hand
in the face of the enemy;
phe has burned like a flaming fire in Jacob,
consuming all around.
4 qHe has bent his bow like an enemy,
with his right hand set rlike a foe;
and he has killed all who were delightful in our eyes
in the tent of the daughter of Zion;
he has poured out his fury like fire.
5 sThe Lord has become like an enemy;
the has swallowed up Israel;
uhe has swallowed up all its palaces;
he has laid in ruins its strongholds,
and he has multiplied in the daughter of Judah
vmourning and lamentation.
6 He has laid waste his booth like a garden,
laid in ruins whis meeting place;
xthe Lord has made Zion forget
festival and ySabbath,
and in his fierce indignation has spurned king and priest.
7 zThe Lord has scorned his altar,
aadisowned his sanctuary;
abhe has delivered into the hand of the enemy
the walls of her palaces;
acthey raised a clamor in the house of the Lord
as on the day of festival.
8 adThe Lord determined to lay in ruins
aethe wall of the daughter of Zion;
afhe stretched out the measuring line;
he did not restrain his hand from destroying;
aghe caused rampart and wall to lament;
ahthey languished together.
9 Her gates have sunk into the ground;
aihe has ruined ajand broken her bars;
akher king and princes are among the nations;
the law is no more,
and alher prophets find
no vision from the Lord.
10 The elders of the daughter of Zion
amsit on the ground anin silence;
aothey have thrown dust on their heads
and apput on sackcloth;
the young women of Jerusalem
have bowed their heads to the ground.
11 aqMy eyes are spent with weeping;
army stomach churns;
asmy bile is poured out to the ground
atbecause of the destruction of the daughter of my people,
aubecause infants and babies avfaint
in the streets of the city.
12 They cry to their mothers,
awWhere is bread and wine?”
axas they faint like a wounded man
in the streets of the city,
as their life is poured out
on their mothersbosom.
13 What can I say for you, ayto what compare you,
O daughter of Jerusalem?
azWhat can I liken to you, that I may comfort you,
O virgin daughter of Zion?
baFor your ruin is vast as the sea;
who can heal you?
14 bbYour prophets have seen for you
false and deceptive visions;
bcthey have not exposed your iniquity
to bdrestore your fortunes,
bebut have seen for you bforacles
that are false and misleading.
15 All who pass along the way
clap their hands at you;
bgthey hiss and wag their heads
at the daughter of Jerusalem:
“Is this the city that was called
bhthe perfection of beauty,
bithe joy of all the earth?”
16 bjAll your enemies
rail against you;
they hiss, they gnash their teeth,
they cry: “We bkhave swallowed her!
Ah, this is the day we longed for;
now we have it; blwe see it!”
17 The Lord has done what he purposed;
he has carried out bmhis word,
which he commanded bnlong ago;
bohe has thrown down bpwithout pity;
bqhe has made the enemy rejoice over you
and exalted the brmight of your foes.
18 Their heart cried to the Lord.
O bswall of the daughter of Zion,
btlet tears stream down like a torrent
buday and night!
bvGive yourself no rest,
bwyour eyes no respite!
19 Arise, bxcry out in the night,
at the beginning of the night watches!
byPour out your heart like water
before the presence of the Lord!
bzLift your hands to him
for the lives of your children,
cawho faint for hunger
at the head of every street.”
20 Look, O Lord, and see!
cbWith whom have you dealt thus?
ccShould women eat the fruit of their womb,
the children of cdtheir tender care?
Should cepriest and prophet be killed
in the sanctuary of the Lord?
21 In the dust of the streets
cflie the young and the old;
cgmy young women and my young men
have fallen by the sword;
chyou have killed them in the day of your anger,
slaughtering ciwithout pity.
22 You summoned as if to cja festival day
ckmy terrors on every side,
cland on the day of the anger of the Lord
no one escaped or survived;
cmthose whom I held and raised
my enemy destroyed.

Ezekiel 7:20-21

20 cnHis beautiful ornament they used for pride, and cothey made their abominable images and their detestable things of it. Therefore cpI make it an unclean thing to them. 21And I will give it into the hands of cqforeigners for prey, crand to the wicked of the earth for spoil, and csthey shall profane it.

Ezekiel 24:21

21Say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: ctBehold, I will profane my sanctuary, the pride of your power, the delight of your eyes, and the yearning of your soul, and cuyour sons and your daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword.

Luke 21:24
