Jeremiah 8:8-9

8 aHow can you say, ‘We are wise,
and the law of the Lord is with us’?
But behold, the lying pen of the scribes
has made it into a lie.
9 bThe wise men shall be put to shame;
they shall be dismayed cand taken;
behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord,
so what wisdom is in them?

27 xWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like ywhitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and zall uncleanness. 28So you also aaoutwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of abhypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 acWoe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31Thus you witness against yourselves that you are adsons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 aeFill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33You serpents, afyou brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to aghell? 34 ahTherefore aiI send you ajprophets and wise men and akscribes, alsome of whom you will kill and crucify, and amsome you will anflog in your synagogues and aopersecute from town to town, 35so that on you may come all apthe righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous aqAbel to the blood of arZechariah the son of Barachiah,
Some manuscripts omit  the son of Barachiah

36Truly, I say to you, avall these things will come upon this generation.
