Job 38:4-41

4 Where were you when I alaid the foundation of the earth?
Tell me, if you have understanding.
5Who determined its measurementssurely you know!
Or who stretched the line upon it?
6On what were its bases sunk,
or who laid its cornerstone,
7when the morning stars bsang together
and all cthe sons of God dshouted for joy?
8 “Or who eshut in the sea with doors
when it burst out from the womb,
9when I made clouds its garment
and fthick darkness its swaddling band,
10and prescribed glimits for it
and set bars and doors,
11and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther,
and here shall your hproud waves be stayed’?
12 “Have you icommanded the morning since your days began,
and caused the dawn to know its place,
13that it might take hold of jthe skirts of the earth,
and the wicked be kshaken out of it?
14It is changed like clay under the seal,
and its features stand out like a garment.
15From the wicked their llight is withheld,
and mtheir uplifted arm is broken.
16 “Have you nentered into the springs of the sea,
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17Have othe gates of death been revealed to you,
or have you seen the gates of pdeep darkness?
18Have you comprehended the expanse of the earth?
Declare, if you know all this.
19 “Where is the way to the dwelling of light,
and where is the place of darkness,
20that you may take it to its territory
and that you may discern qthe paths to its home?
21You know, for ryou were born then,
and the number of your days is great!
22 “Have you entered sthe storehouses of the snow,
or have you seen tthe storehouses of the hail,
23which I have reserved ufor the time of trouble,
vfor the day of battle and war?
24What is the way to the place where the light is distributed,
or where the east wind is scattered upon the earth?
25 “Who has cleft a channel for the torrents of rain
and wa way for the thunderbolt,
26to bring rain on xa land where no man is,
on ythe desert in which there is no man,
27to satisfy the waste and desolate land,
and to make the ground sprout with zgrass?
28 Has aathe rain a father,
or who has begotten the drops of dew?
29From whose womb did abthe ice come forth,
and who has given birth to acthe frost of heaven?
30The waters become hard like stone,
and the face of the deep is adfrozen.
31 “Can you bind the chains of aethe Pleiades
or loose the cords of afOrion?
32Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth
Probably the name of a constellation
in their season,
or can you guide ahthe Bear with its children?
33Do you know aithe ordinances of the heavens?
Can you establish their rule on the earth?
34 “Can you lift up your voice to the clouds,
that aja flood of waters may cover you?
35Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go
and say to you, ‘Here we are’?
36Who has akput wisdom in althe inward parts
Or  in the ibis

or given understanding to the mind?
Or rooster

37Who can number the clouds by wisdom?
Or who can tilt the waterskins of the heavens,
38when the dust runs into a mass
and aothe clods stick fast together?
39 “Can you hunt the prey for the lion,
or apsatisfy the appetite of the young lions,
40when they crouch in their aqdens
or lie in wait arin their thicket?
41Who provides for asthe raven its prey,
when its young ones cry to God for help,
and wander about for lack of food?

Psalms 104:2-35

2covering yourself with light as with a garment,
atstretching out the heavens aulike a tent.
3He avlays the beams of his awchambers on the waters;
he makes axthe clouds his chariot;
he rides on aythe wings of the wind;
4he azmakes his messengers winds,
his baministers bba flaming fire.
5 He bcset the earth on its foundations,
so that it should never be moved.
6You bdcovered it with the deep as with a garment;
the waters stood above the mountains.
7At beyour rebuke they fled;
at bfthe sound of your thunder they bgtook to flight.
8The mountains rose, the valleys sank down
to the place that you bhappointed for them.
9You set bia boundary that they may not pass,
so that they bjmight not again cover the earth.
10 You make springs gush forth in the valleys;
they flow between the hills;
11they bkgive drink to every beast of the field;
the wild donkeys quench their thirst.
12Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell;
they sing among the branches.
13 blFrom your lofty abode you bmwater the mountains;
the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.
14 You cause bnthe grass to grow for the livestock
and boplants for man to cultivate,
that he may bring forth bpfood from the earth
15and bqwine to gladden the heart of man,
broil to make his face shine
and bread to bsstrengthen man’s heart.
16 The trees of the Lord are watered abundantly,
btthe cedars of Lebanon buthat he planted.
17In them the birds build their nests;
the stork has her home in the fir trees.
18The high mountains are for bvthe wild goats;
the rocks are a refuge for bwthe rock badgers.
19 He made the moon to mark the bxseasons;
Or  the appointed times (compare Genesis 1:14)

the sun knows its time for setting.
20 bzYou make darkness, and it is night,
when all the beasts of the forest creep about.
21 caThe young lions roar for their prey,
seeking their food from God.
22When the sun rises, they steal away
and lie down in their cbdens.
23 ccMan goes out to his work
and to his labor until the evening.
24 O Lord, how manifold are your works!
In cdwisdom have you made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
25Here is the sea, great and wide,
cewhich teems with creatures innumerable,
living things both small and great.
26There go the ships,
and cfLeviathan, which you formed to cgplay in it.
Or  you formed to play with

27 These ciall look to you,
to cjgive them their food in due season.
28When you give it to them, they gather it up;
when you ckopen your hand, they are filled with good things.
29When you clhide your face, they are cmdismayed;
when you cntake away their breath, they die
and coreturn to their dust.
30When you cpsend forth your Spirit,
Or breath
they are created,
and you crrenew the face of the ground.
31 May the glory of the Lord csendure forever;
may the Lord ctrejoice in his works,
32who looks on the earth and it cutrembles,
who cvtouches the mountains and they smoke!
33I will sing to the Lord cwas long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
34May my cxmeditation be pleasing to him,
for I rejoice in the Lord.
35Let cysinners be consumed from the earth,
and let the wicked be no more!
czBless the Lord, O my soul!
daPraise the Lord!

Isaiah 40:12-31

12 dbWho has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand
and marked off the heavens with a span,
enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure
and weighed the mountains in scales
and the hills in a balance?
13 dcWho has measured
Or  has directed
the Spirit of the Lord,
or what man shows him his counsel?
14Whom did he consult,
and who made him understand?
deWho taught him the path of justice,
and taught him knowledge,
and showed him the way of understanding?
15Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket,
and are accounted dfas the dust on the scales;
behold, he takes up dgthe coastlands like fine dust.
16Lebanon would not suffice for fuel,
nor are dhits beasts enough for a burnt offering.
17 diAll the nations are as nothing before him,
they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.
18 djTo whom then will you liken God,
dkor what likeness compare with him?
19 dlAn idol! A craftsman casts it,
and a goldsmith overlays it with gold
and casts for it silver chains.
20 dmHe who is too impoverished for an offering
chooses wood
Or  He chooses valuable wood
that will not rot;
he seeks out a skillful craftsman
to set up an idol that will not move.
21 doDo you not know? Do you not hear?
Has it not been told you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,
and its inhabitants are dplike grasshoppers;
dqwho stretches out the heavens like a curtain,
and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;
23 drwho brings princes to nothing,
and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness.
24 Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown,
scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth,
when he blows on them, and they wither,
dsand the tempest carries them off like stubble.
25 dtTo whom then will you compare me,
that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
26Lift up your eyes on high and see:
who created these?
duHe who brings out their host by number,
calling them all by name;
by the greatness of his might
and because he is strong in power,
not one is missing.
27 Why do you say, O Jacob,
and speak, O Israel,
dv“My way is hidden from the Lord,
dwand my right is disregarded by my God”?
28Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is dxthe everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
dyhis understanding is unsearchable.
29He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
31but dzthey who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings ealike eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 53:8

8By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
and as for his generation, ebwho considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people?
