Joel 1:2-7

An Invasion of Locusts

2 aHear this, byou elders;
give ear, call inhabitants of the land!
dHas such a thing happened in your days,
or in the days of your fathers?
3 eTell your children of it,
and let your children tell their children,
and their children to another generation.
4 What fthe cutting locust left,
gthe swarming locust has eaten.
What the swarming locust left,
hthe hopping locust has eaten,
and what the hopping locust left,
ithe destroying locust has eaten.
5 Awake, you drunkards, and weep,
and jwail, all you drinkers of wine,
because of kthe sweet wine,
for it is cut off from your mouth.
6For la nation has come up against my land,
mpowerful and beyond number;
nits teeth are lionsteeth,
and it has the fangs of a lioness.
7It has laid waste my vine
and splintered my ofig tree;
it has stripped off their bark and thrown it down;
their branches are made white.

Joel 2:1-11

The Day of the Lord

1 pBlow a trumpet in qZion;
sound an alarm on rmy holy mountain!
Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble,
for sthe day of the Lord is coming; it is near,
2 ta day of darkness and gloom,
ua day of clouds and thick darkness!
Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains
va great and powerful people;
wtheir like has never been before,
nor will be again after them
through the years of all generations.
3 xFire devours before them,
and behind them a flame burns.
The land is like ythe garden of Eden before them,
but zbehind them a desolate wilderness,
and nothing escapes them.
4 aaTheir appearance is like the appearance of horses,
and like war horses they run.
5 abAs with the rumbling of chariots,
they leap on the tops of the mountains,
like the crackling of aca flame of fire
devouring the stubble,
adlike a powerful army
drawn up for battle.
6 Before them peoples are in anguish;
aeall faces grow pale.
7Like warriors they charge;
like soldiers they scale the wall.
They march each on his way;
they do not swerve from their paths.
8They do not jostle one another;
afeach marches in his path;
they burst through the weapons
and are not halted.
9 agThey leap upon the city,
they run upon the walls,
ahthey climb up into the houses,
aithey enter through the windows ajlike a thief.
10 akThe earth quakes before them;
the heavens tremble.
alThe sun and the moon are darkened,
and the stars withdraw their shining.
11 amThe Lord utters his voice
before anhis army,
for his camp is exceedingly great;
aohe who executes his word is powerful.
apFor the day of the Lord is aqgreat and very awesome;
arwho can endure it?
