John 11:1-5

The Death of Lazarus

1Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of aMary and her sister Martha. 2 bIt was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, che whom you love is ill.” 4But when Jesus heard it he said, dThis illness does not lead to death. It is for ethe glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

5Now fJesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

John 12:1-3

Mary Anoints Jesus at Bethany

1Six days before gthe Passover, hJesus therefore came to Bethany, iwhere Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2So they gave a dinner for him there. jMartha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. 3 kMary therefore took a pound
Greek litra; a litra (or Roman pound) was equal to about 11 1/2 ounces or 327 grams
of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
