John 13:31-38

A New Commandment

31When he had gone out, Jesus said, aNow is the Son of Man glorified, and bGod is glorified in him. 32If God is glorified in him, cGod will also glorify him in himself, and dglorify him at once. 33Little children, eyet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just fas I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 gA new commandment hI give to you, ithat you love one another: jjust as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 kBy this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

36Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” lJesus answered him, Where I am going myou cannot follow me now, nbut you will follow afterward.” 37 oPeter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, pthe rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

John 14

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

1 q“Let not your hearts be troubled. rBelieve in God;
Or You believe in God
believe also in me.
2In tmy Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that uI go to prepare a place for you?
Or  In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you
3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you wto myself, that xwhere I am you may be also. 4And you know the way to where I am going.”
Some manuscripts Where I am going you know, and the way you know
5 zThomas said to him, “Lord, aawe do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6Jesus said to him, I am abthe way, and acthe truth, and adthe life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 aeIf you had known me, you would have afknown my Father also.
Or  If you know me, you will know my Father also, or If you have known me, you will know my Father also
From now on you do know him and ahhave seen him.”

8 aiPhilip said to him, “Lord, ajshow us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? akWhoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that alI am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you amI do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that anI am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else aobelieve on account of the works themselves.

12Truly, truly, I say to you, apwhoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I aqam going to the Father. 13 arWhatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that asthe Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 atIf you ask me

anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 avIf you love me, you will awkeep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another axHelper,
Or Advocate, or Counselor; also 14:26; 15:26; 16:7
to be with you forever,
17even azthe Spirit of truth, bawhom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and bbwill be

in you.

18“I will not leave you as orphans; bdI will come to you. 19 beYet a little while and the world will see me no more, but bfyou will see me. bgBecause I live, you also will live. 20 bhIn that day you will know that biI am in my Father, and bjyou in me, and bkI in you. 21 blWhoever has my commandments and bmkeeps them, he it is who loves me. And bnhe who loves me bowill be loved by my Father, and I will love him and bpmanifest myself to him.” 22 bqJudas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it brthat you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23Jesus answered him, bsIf anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and btwe will come to him and bumake our home with him. 24Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And bvthe word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

25“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26But the bwHelper, the Holy Spirit, bxwhom the Father will send in my name, byhe will teach you all things and bzbring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 caPeace I leave with you; cbmy peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. ccLet not your hearts be troubled, neither cdlet them be afraid. 28 ceYou heard me say to you, cf‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I cgam going to the Father, for chthe Father is greater than I. 29And cinow I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30I will no longer talk much with you, for cjthe ruler of this world is coming. ckHe has no claim on me, 31but I do clas the Father has commanded me, cmso that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

John 15

I Am the True Vine

1I am the cntrue vine, and my Father is cothe vinedresser. 2 cpEvery branch in me that does not bear fruit cqhe takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, crthat it may bear more fruit. 3Already csyou are clean ctbecause of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 cuAbide cvin me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5I am the vine; cwyou are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that cxbears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not abide in me cyhe is thrown away like a branch and withers; czand the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If dayou abide in me, and my words abide in you, dbask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 dcBy this my Father is glorified, that you ddbear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 deAs the Father has loved me, dfso have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 dgIf you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as dhI have kept dimy Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11These things I have spoken to you, djthat my joy may be in you, and that dkyour joy may be full.

12 dlThis is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 dmGreater love has no one than this, dnthat someone lay down his life for his friends. 14You are domy friends dpif you do what I command you. 15 dqNo longer do I call you servants,
Greek bondservants
for the servant
Greek bondservant; also verse 20
dtdoes not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for duall that I have heard from my Father dvI have made known to you.
16You did not choose me, but dwI chose you and appointed you that you should go and dxbear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that dywhatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17These things I command you, dzso that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 eaIf the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 ebIf you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because ecyou are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20Remember the word that I said to you: ed‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, eethey will also persecute you. efIf they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21But egall these things they will do to you ehon account of my name, eibecause they do not know him who sent me. 22If I had not come and spoken to them, ejthey would not have been guilty of sin,
Greek  they would not have sin; also verse 24
but now they have no excuse for their sin.
23 elWhoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 emIf I had not done among them the works that no one else did, enthey would not be guilty of sin, but now they have eoseen and hated both me and my Father. 25But epthe word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: eqThey hated me without a cause.’

26“But erwhen the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, eshe will bear witness about me. 27And etyou also will bear witness, eubecause you have been with me evfrom the beginning.

John 16

1“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 ewThey will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, exthe hour is coming when eywhoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3And they will do these things ezbecause they have not known the Father, nor me. 4But faI have said these things to you, that when fbtheir hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, fcbecause I was with you.
5But now fdI am going to him who sent me, and fenone of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6But because I have said these things to you, ffsorrow has filled your heart. 7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for fgif I do not go away, fhthe Helper will not come to you. But fiif fjI go, fkI will send him to you. 8 flAnd when he comes, he will fmconvict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9concerning sin, fnbecause they do not believe in me; 10 foconcerning righteousness, fpbecause I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 fqconcerning judgment, because the ruler of this world fris judged.

12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13When fsthe Spirit of truth comes, fthe will fuguide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but fvwhatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14He will fwglorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 fxAll that the Father has is mine; fytherefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 fz“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and gaagain a little while, and you will see me.” 17So gbsome of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, gc‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, gdbecause I am going to the Father?” 18So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while? geWe do not know what he is talking about.” 19 gfJesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20Truly, truly, I say to you, ggyou will weep and lament, but ghthe world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but giyour sorrow will turn into joy. 21 gjWhen a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 gkSo also you have sorrow now, but glI will see you again, and gmyour hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 gnIn that day you will goask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, gpwhatever you ask of the Father in my name, gqhe will give it to you. 24Until now you have asked nothing in my name. grAsk, and you will receive, gsthat your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. gtThe hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 gufor the Father himself loves you, because gvyou have loved me and gwhave believed that I came from God.
Some manuscripts  from the Father
28 gyI came from the Father and have come into the world, and now gzI am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not hausing figurative speech! 30Now we know that hbyou know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that hcyou came from God.” 31Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32Behold, hdthe hour is coming, indeed it has come, when heyou will be scattered, each to his own home, and hfwill leave me alone. hgYet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33I have said these things to you, that hhin me you may have peace. hiIn the world you will have hjtribulation. But hktake heart; hlI have overcome the world.”
