31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, ^a“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and ^bGod is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, ^cGod will also glorify him in himself, and ^dglorify him at once. 33 Little children, ^eyet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just ^fas I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 ^gA new commandment ^hI give to you, ⁱthat you love one another: ^jjust as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 ^kBy this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

John 14

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

1 ^l“Let not your hearts be troubled. ^mBelieve in God; ^{▼▼Or You believe in God} believe also in me. 2 In ^omy Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that ^pI go to prepare a place for you? ^{▼▼Or In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you} 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you ^rto myself, that ^swhere I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” ^{▼▼Some manuscripts Where I am going you know, and the way you know} 5 ^uThomas said to him, “Lord, ^vwe do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am ^wthe way, and ^xthe truth, and ^ythe life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 ^zIf you had known me, you would have ^aaknown my Father also. ^{▼▼Or If you know me, you will know my Father also, or If you have known me, you will know my Father also} From now on you do know him and ^achave seen him.”

8 ^adPhilip said to him, “Lord, ^aeshow us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? ^afWhoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that ^agI am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you ^ahI do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that ^aiI am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else ^ajbelieve on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^akwhoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I ^alam going to the Father. 13 ^amWhatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that ^anthe Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 ^aoIf you ask me ^{▼▼Some manuscripts omit me} anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 ^aq“If you love me, you will ^arkeep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another ^asHelper, ^{▼▼Or Advocate, or Counselor; also 14:26; 15:26; 16:7} to be with you forever, 17 even ^authe Spirit of truth, ^avwhom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and ^awwill be ^{▼▼Some manuscripts and is} in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; ^ayI will come to you. 19 ^azYet a little while and the world will see me no more, but ^bayou will see me. ^bbBecause I live, you also will live. 20 ^bcIn that day you will know that ^bdI am in my Father, and ^beyou in me, and ^bfI in you. 21 ^bgWhoever has my commandments and ^bhkeeps them, he it is who loves me. And ^bihe who loves me ^bjwill be loved by my Father, and I will love him and ^bkmanifest myself to him.” 22 ^blJudas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it ^bmthat you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, ^bn“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and ^bowe will come to him and ^bpmake our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And ^bqthe word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the ^brHelper, the Holy Spirit, ^bswhom the Father will send in my name, ^bthe will teach you all things and ^bubring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 ^bvPeace I leave with you; ^bwmy peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. ^bxLet not your hearts be troubled, neither ^bylet them be afraid. 28 ^bzYou heard me say to you, ^ca‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I ^cbam going to the Father, for ^ccthe Father is greater than I. 29 And ^cdnow I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for ^cethe ruler of this world is coming. ^cfHe has no claim on me, 31 but I do ^cgas the Father has commanded me, ^chso that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

John 15

I Am the True Vine

1 “I am the ^citrue vine, and my Father is ^cjthe vinedresser. 2 ^ckEvery branch in me that does not bear fruit ^clhe takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, ^cmthat it may bear more fruit. 3 Already ^cnyou are clean ^cobecause of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 ^cpAbide ^cqin me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; ^cryou are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that ^csbears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me ^cthe is thrown away like a branch and withers; ^cuand the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If ^cvyou abide in me, and my words abide in you, ^cwask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 ^cxBy this my Father is glorified, that you ^cybear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 ^czAs the Father has loved me, ^daso have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 ^dbIf you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as ^dcI have kept ^ddmy Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, ^dethat my joy may be in you, and that ^dfyour joy may be full.

12 ^dg“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 ^dhGreater love has no one than this, ^dithat someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are ^djmy friends ^dkif you do what I command you. 15 ^dlNo longer do I call you servants, ^{▼▼Greek bondservants} for the servant ^{▼▼Greek bondservant; also verse 20} ^dodoes not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for ^dpall that I have heard from my Father ^dqI have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but ^drI chose you and appointed you that you should go and ^dsbear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that ^dtwhatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, ^duso that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 ^dv“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 ^dwIf you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because ^dxyou are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ^dy‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, ^dzthey will also persecute you. ^eaIf they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But ^eball these things they will do to you ^econ account of my name, ^edbecause they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, ^eethey would not have been guilty of sin, ^{▼▼Greek they would not have sin; also verse 24} but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 ^egWhoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 ^ehIf I had not done among them the works that no one else did, ^eithey would not be guilty of sin, but now they have ^ejseen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But ^ekthe word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ^el‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But ^emwhen the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, ^enhe will bear witness about me. 27 And ^eoyou also will bear witness, ^epbecause you have been with me ^eqfrom the beginning.

John 16

1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 ^erThey will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, ^esthe hour is coming when ^etwhoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things ^eubecause they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But ^evI have said these things to you, that when ^ewtheir hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, ^exbecause I was with you. 5 But now ^eyI am going to him who sent me, and ^eznone of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, ^fasorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for ^fbif I do not go away, ^fcthe Helper will not come to you. But ^fdif ^feI go, ^ffI will send him to you. 8 ^fgAnd when he comes, he will ^fhconvict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, ^fibecause they do not believe in me; 10 ^fjconcerning righteousness, ^fkbecause I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 ^flconcerning judgment, because the ruler of this world ^fmis judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When ^fnthe Spirit of truth comes, ^fohe will ^fpguide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but ^fqwhatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will ^frglorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 ^fsAll that the Father has is mine; ^fttherefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 ^fu“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and ^fvagain a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So ^fwsome of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ^fx‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ^fy‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? ^fzWe do not know what he is talking about.” 19 ^gaJesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, ^gbyou will weep and lament, but ^gcthe world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but ^gdyour sorrow will turn into joy. 21 ^geWhen a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 ^gfSo also you have sorrow now, but ^ggI will see you again, and ^ghyour hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 ^giIn that day you will ^gjask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, ^gkwhatever you ask of the Father in my name, ^glhe will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. ^gmAsk, and you will receive, ^gnthat your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. ^goThe hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 ^gpfor the Father himself loves you, because ^gqyou have loved me and ^grhave believed that I came from God. ^{▼▼Some manuscripts from the Father} 28 ^gtI came from the Father and have come into the world, and now ^guI am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not ^gvusing figurative speech! 30 Now we know that ^gwyou know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that ^gxyou came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, ^gythe hour is coming, indeed it has come, when ^gzyou will be scattered, each to his own home, and ^hawill leave me alone. ^hbYet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that ^hcin me you may have peace. ^hdIn the world you will have ^hetribulation. But ^hftake heart; ^hgI have overcome the world.”

John 17

The High Priestly Prayer

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, ^hhhe lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, ^hithe hour has come; ^hjglorify your Son that the Son may ^hkglorify you, 2 since ^hlyou have given him authority over all flesh, ^hmto give eternal life to all ^hnwhom you have given him. 3 ^hoAnd this is eternal life, ^hpthat they know you, ^hqthe only ^hrtrue God, and ^hsJesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I ^htglorified you on earth, ^huhaving accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, ^hvglorify me in your own presence with the glory ^hwthat I had with you ^hxbefore the world existed.

6 ^hy“I have manifested your name to the people ^hzwhom you gave me out of the world. ^iaYours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything ^ibthat you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them ^icthe words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that ^idI came from you; and ^iethey have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. ^ifI am not praying for the world but for those ^igwhom you have given me, for ^ihthey are yours. 10 ⁱⁱAll mine are yours, and yours are mine, and ^ijI am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but ^ikthey are in the world, and ^ilI am coming to you. ^imHoly Father, ⁱⁿkeep them in your name, ^iowhich you have given me, ^ipthat they may be one, ^iqeven as we are one. 12 ^irWhile I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have ^isguarded them, and ^itnot one of them has been lost except ^iuthe son of destruction, ^ivthat the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now ^iwI am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have ^ixmy joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 ^iyI have given them your word, and ^izthe world has hated them ^jabecause they are not of the world, ^jbjust as I am not of the world. 15 I ^jcdo not ask that you ^jdtake them out of the world, but that you ^jekeep them from ^jfthe evil one. ^{▼▼Or from evil} 16 ^jhThey are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 ^jiSanctify them ^{▼▼Greek Set them apart (for holy service to God)} in the truth; ^jkyour word is truth. 18 ^jlAs you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And ^jmfor their sake ^jnI consecrate myself, ^{▼▼Or I sanctify myself; or I set myself apart (for holy service to God)} that they also ^jpmay be sanctified ^{▼▼Greek may be set apart (for holy service to God)} in truth.

20 “I do not ^jrask for these only, but also for those ^jswho will believe in me through their word, 21 ^jtthat they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that ^juthey also may be in ^jvus, so that the world ^jwmay believe that you have sent me. 22 ^jxThe glory that you have given me ^jyI have given to them, ^jzthat they may be one even as we are one, 23 ^kaI in them and you in me, ^kbthat they may become perfectly one, ^kcso that the world may know that you sent me and ^kdloved them even as ^keyou loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be ^kfwith me ^kgwhere I am, ^khto see my glory that you have given me because you loved me ^kibefore the foundation of the world. 25 ^kjO righteous Father, even though ^kkthe world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 ^klI made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love ^kmwith which you have loved me may be in them, and ^knI in them.”
