Joh 13-17 | ESV | STEP | Now before the Feast of the Passover , when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father , having loved his own who were in the world , he loved them to the end .

1 Now ^abefore ^bthe Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that ^chis hour had come ^dto depart out of this world to the Father, ^ehaving loved ^fhis own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when ^gthe devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing ^hthat the Father had given all things into his hands, and that ⁱhe had come from God and ^jwas going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, ^ktied it around his waist. 5 Then he ^lpoured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 ^mJesus answered him, “What I am doing ⁿyou do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 ^oPeter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, ^p“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” 9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, ^qexcept for his feet, ^{▼▼Some manuscripts omit except for his feet} but is completely clean. And ^syou ^{▼▼The Greek words for you in this verse are plural} are clean, ^ubut not every one of you.” 11 ^vFor he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 When he had washed their feet and ^wput on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, ^x“Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 ^yYou call me ^zTeacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, ^aayou also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, ^abthat you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, ^aca servant ^{▼▼Greek bondservant} is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, ^aeblessed are you if you do them. 18 ^afI am not speaking of all of you; I know ^agwhom I have chosen. But ^ahthe Scripture will be fulfilled, ^{▼▼Greek But in order that the Scripture may be fulfilled} ^aj‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 ^akI am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, ^alwhoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

One of You Will Betray Me

21 After saying these things, ^amJesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, ^an“Truly, truly, I say to you, ^aoone of you will betray me.” 22 ^apThe disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 ^aqOne of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table ^arat Jesus’ side, ^{▼▼Greek in the bosom of Jesus} 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus ^{▼▼Greek lacks Jesus} of whom he was speaking. 25 ^auSo that disciple, ^avleaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, ^aw“It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread ^axwhen I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, ^ayhe gave it to Judas, ^azthe son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, ^baSatan entered into him. Jesus said to him, ^bb“What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, ^bcbecause Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need ^bdfor the feast,” or that he should ^begive something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. ^bfAnd it was night.

A New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, ^bg“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and ^bhGod is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, ^biGod will also glorify him in himself, and ^bjglorify him at once. 33 Little children, ^bkyet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just ^blas I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 ^bmA new commandment ^bnI give to you, ^bothat you love one another: ^bpjust as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 ^bqBy this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” ^brJesus answered him, “Where I am going ^bsyou cannot follow me now, ^btbut you will follow afterward.” 37 ^buPeter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, ^bvthe rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.

John 14

I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

1 ^bw“Let not your hearts be troubled. ^bxBelieve in God; ^{▼▼Or You believe in God} believe also in me. 2 In ^bzmy Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that ^caI go to prepare a place for you? ^{▼▼Or In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you} 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you ^ccto myself, that ^cdwhere I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” ^{▼▼Some manuscripts Where I am going you know, and the way you know} 5 ^cfThomas said to him, “Lord, ^cgwe do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am ^chthe way, and ^cithe truth, and ^cjthe life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 ^ckIf you had known me, you would have ^clknown my Father also. ^{▼▼Or If you know me, you will know my Father also, or If you have known me, you will know my Father also} From now on you do know him and ^cnhave seen him.”

8 ^coPhilip said to him, “Lord, ^cpshow us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? ^cqWhoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that ^crI am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you ^csI do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that ^ctI am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else ^cubelieve on account of the works themselves.

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, ^cvwhoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I ^cwam going to the Father. 13 ^cxWhatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that ^cythe Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 ^czIf you ask me ^{▼▼Some manuscripts omit me} anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

15 ^db“If you love me, you will ^dckeep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another ^ddHelper, ^{▼▼Or Advocate, or Counselor; also 14:26; 15:26; 16:7} to be with you forever, 17 even ^dfthe Spirit of truth, ^dgwhom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and ^dhwill be ^{▼▼Some manuscripts and is} in you.

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; ^djI will come to you. 19 ^dkYet a little while and the world will see me no more, but ^dlyou will see me. ^dmBecause I live, you also will live. 20 ^dnIn that day you will know that ^doI am in my Father, and ^dpyou in me, and ^dqI in you. 21 ^drWhoever has my commandments and ^dskeeps them, he it is who loves me. And ^dthe who loves me ^duwill be loved by my Father, and I will love him and ^dvmanifest myself to him.” 22 ^dwJudas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it ^dxthat you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, ^dy“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and ^dzwe will come to him and ^eamake our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And ^ebthe word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.

25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the ^ecHelper, the Holy Spirit, ^edwhom the Father will send in my name, ^eehe will teach you all things and ^efbring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 ^egPeace I leave with you; ^ehmy peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. ^eiLet not your hearts be troubled, neither ^ejlet them be afraid. 28 ^ekYou heard me say to you, ^el‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I ^emam going to the Father, for ^enthe Father is greater than I. 29 And ^eonow I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for ^epthe ruler of this world is coming. ^eqHe has no claim on me, 31 but I do ^eras the Father has commanded me, ^esso that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

John 15

I Am the True Vine

1 “I am the ^ettrue vine, and my Father is ^euthe vinedresser. 2 ^evEvery branch in me that does not bear fruit ^ewhe takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, ^exthat it may bear more fruit. 3 Already ^eyyou are clean ^ezbecause of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 ^faAbide ^fbin me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; ^fcyou are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that ^fdbears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me ^fehe is thrown away like a branch and withers; ^ffand the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If ^fgyou abide in me, and my words abide in you, ^fhask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 ^fiBy this my Father is glorified, that you ^fjbear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 ^fkAs the Father has loved me, ^flso have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 ^fmIf you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as ^fnI have kept ^fomy Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, ^fpthat my joy may be in you, and that ^fqyour joy may be full.

12 ^fr“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 ^fsGreater love has no one than this, ^ftthat someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are ^fumy friends ^fvif you do what I command you. 15 ^fwNo longer do I call you servants, ^{▼▼Greek bondservants} for the servant ^{▼▼Greek bondservant; also verse 20} ^fzdoes not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for ^gaall that I have heard from my Father ^gbI have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but ^gcI chose you and appointed you that you should go and ^gdbear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that ^gewhatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, ^gfso that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

18 ^gg“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 ^ghIf you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because ^giyou are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ^gj‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, ^gkthey will also persecute you. ^glIf they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But ^gmall these things they will do to you ^gnon account of my name, ^gobecause they do not know him who sent me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, ^gpthey would not have been guilty of sin, ^{▼▼Greek they would not have sin; also verse 24} but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 ^grWhoever hates me hates my Father also. 24 ^gsIf I had not done among them the works that no one else did, ^gtthey would not be guilty of sin, but now they have ^guseen and hated both me and my Father. 25 But ^gvthe word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: ^gw‘They hated me without a cause.’

26 “But ^gxwhen the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, ^gyhe will bear witness about me. 27 And ^gzyou also will bear witness, ^habecause you have been with me ^hbfrom the beginning.

John 16

1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 ^hcThey will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, ^hdthe hour is coming when ^hewhoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things ^hfbecause they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But ^hgI have said these things to you, that when ^hhtheir hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, ^hibecause I was with you. 5 But now ^hjI am going to him who sent me, and ^hknone of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, ^hlsorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for ^hmif I do not go away, ^hnthe Helper will not come to you. But ^hoif ^hpI go, ^hqI will send him to you. 8 ^hrAnd when he comes, he will ^hsconvict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, ^htbecause they do not believe in me; 10 ^huconcerning righteousness, ^hvbecause I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 ^hwconcerning judgment, because the ruler of this world ^hxis judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When ^hythe Spirit of truth comes, ^hzhe will ^iaguide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but ^ibwhatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will ^icglorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 ^idAll that the Father has is mine; ^ietherefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 ^if“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and ^igagain a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So ^ihsome of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ⁱⁱ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ^ij‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? ^ikWe do not know what he is talking about.” 19 ^ilJesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, ^imyou will weep and lament, but ⁱⁿthe world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but ^ioyour sorrow will turn into joy. 21 ^ipWhen a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 ^iqSo also you have sorrow now, but ^irI will see you again, and ^isyour hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 ^itIn that day you will ^iuask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, ^ivwhatever you ask of the Father in my name, ^iwhe will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. ^ixAsk, and you will receive, ^iythat your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. ^izThe hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 ^jafor the Father himself loves you, because ^jbyou have loved me and ^jchave believed that I came from God. ^{▼▼Some manuscripts from the Father} 28 ^jeI came from the Father and have come into the world, and now ^jfI am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not ^jgusing figurative speech! 30 Now we know that ^jhyou know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that ^jiyou came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, ^jjthe hour is coming, indeed it has come, when ^jkyou will be scattered, each to his own home, and ^jlwill leave me alone. ^jmYet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that ^jnin me you may have peace. ^joIn the world you will have ^jptribulation. But ^jqtake heart; ^jrI have overcome the world.”

John 17

The High Priestly Prayer

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, ^jshe lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, ^jtthe hour has come; ^juglorify your Son that the Son may ^jvglorify you, 2 since ^jwyou have given him authority over all flesh, ^jxto give eternal life to all ^jywhom you have given him. 3 ^jzAnd this is eternal life, ^kathat they know you, ^kbthe only ^kctrue God, and ^kdJesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I ^keglorified you on earth, ^kfhaving accomplished the work that you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, ^kgglorify me in your own presence with the glory ^khthat I had with you ^kibefore the world existed.

6 ^kj“I have manifested your name to the people ^kkwhom you gave me out of the world. ^klYours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything ^kmthat you have given me is from you. 8 For I have given them ^knthe words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that ^koI came from you; and ^kpthey have believed that you sent me. 9 I am praying for them. ^kqI am not praying for the world but for those ^krwhom you have given me, for ^ksthey are yours. 10 ^ktAll mine are yours, and yours are mine, and ^kuI am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but ^kvthey are in the world, and ^kwI am coming to you. ^kxHoly Father, ^kykeep them in your name, ^kzwhich you have given me, ^lathat they may be one, ^lbeven as we are one. 12 ^lcWhile I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have ^ldguarded them, and ^lenot one of them has been lost except ^lfthe son of destruction, ^lgthat the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now ^lhI am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have ^limy joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 ^ljI have given them your word, and ^lkthe world has hated them ^llbecause they are not of the world, ^lmjust as I am not of the world. 15 I ^lndo not ask that you ^lotake them out of the world, but that you ^lpkeep them from ^lqthe evil one. ^{▼▼Or from evil} 16 ^lsThey are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 ^ltSanctify them ^{▼▼Greek Set them apart (for holy service to God)} in the truth; ^lvyour word is truth. 18 ^lwAs you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And ^lxfor their sake ^lyI consecrate myself, ^{▼▼Or I sanctify myself; or I set myself apart (for holy service to God)} that they also ^mamay be sanctified ^{▼▼Greek may be set apart (for holy service to God)} in truth.

20 “I do not ^mcask for these only, but also for those ^mdwho will believe in me through their word, 21 ^methat they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that ^mfthey also may be in ^mgus, so that the world ^mhmay believe that you have sent me. 22 ^miThe glory that you have given me ^mjI have given to them, ^mkthat they may be one even as we are one, 23 ^mlI in them and you in me, ^mmthat they may become perfectly one, ^mnso that the world may know that you sent me and ^moloved them even as ^mpyou loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be ^mqwith me ^mrwhere I am, ^msto see my glory that you have given me because you loved me ^mtbefore the foundation of the world. 25 ^muO righteous Father, even though ^mvthe world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 ^mwI made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love ^mxwith which you have loved me may be in them, and ^myI in them.”
