1 On ^athe third day there was a wedding at ^bCana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with ^chis disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, ^d“Woman, ^ewhat does this have to do with me? ^fMy hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6 Now there were six stone water jars there ^gfor the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty ^hgallons. ^{▼▼Greek two or three measures (metrētas); a metrētēs was about 10 gallons or 35 liters} 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted ^jthe water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested ^khis glory. And ^lhis disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and ^mhis brothers ^{▼▼Or brothers and sisters. The plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) refers to siblings in a family. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, adelphoi may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters} and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

13 ^oThe Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus ^pwent up to Jerusalem. 14 ^qIn the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15 And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16 And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make ^rmy Father’s house a house of trade.” 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, ^s“Zeal for your house will consume me.”

18 So the Jews said to him, ^t“What sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19 Jesus answered them, ^u“Destroy this temple, and in three days ^vI will raise it up.” 20 The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, ^{▼▼Or This temple was built forty-six years ago} and will you raise it up in three days?” 21 But he was speaking about ^xthe temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was raised from the dead, ^yhis disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed ^zthe Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus Knows What Is in Man

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name ^aawhen they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus ^abon his part did not entrust himself to them, because ^ache knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for ^adhe himself knew what was in man.

John 16

1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. 2 ^aeThey will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, ^afthe hour is coming when ^agwhoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. 3 And they will do these things ^ahbecause they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But ^aiI have said these things to you, that when ^ajtheir hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, ^akbecause I was with you. 5 But now ^alI am going to him who sent me, and ^amnone of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, ^ansorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for ^aoif I do not go away, ^apthe Helper will not come to you. But ^aqif ^arI go, ^asI will send him to you. 8 ^atAnd when he comes, he will ^auconvict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, ^avbecause they do not believe in me; 10 ^awconcerning righteousness, ^axbecause I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 ^ayconcerning judgment, because the ruler of this world ^azis judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When ^bathe Spirit of truth comes, ^bbhe will ^bcguide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but ^bdwhatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will ^beglorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 ^bfAll that the Father has is mine; ^bgtherefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 ^bh“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and ^biagain a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So ^bjsome of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ^bk‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ^bl‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? ^bmWe do not know what he is talking about.” 19 ^bnJesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, ^boyou will weep and lament, but ^bpthe world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but ^bqyour sorrow will turn into joy. 21 ^brWhen a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 ^bsSo also you have sorrow now, but ^btI will see you again, and ^buyour hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 ^bvIn that day you will ^bwask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, ^bxwhatever you ask of the Father in my name, ^byhe will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. ^bzAsk, and you will receive, ^cathat your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. ^cbThe hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 ^ccfor the Father himself loves you, because ^cdyou have loved me and ^cehave believed that I came from God. ^{▼▼Some manuscripts from the Father} 28 ^cgI came from the Father and have come into the world, and now ^chI am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not ^ciusing figurative speech! 30 Now we know that ^cjyou know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that ^ckyou came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, ^clthe hour is coming, indeed it has come, when ^cmyou will be scattered, each to his own home, and ^cnwill leave me alone. ^coYet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that ^cpin me you may have peace. ^cqIn the world you will have ^crtribulation. But ^cstake heart; ^ctI have overcome the world.”
