John 2

The Wedding at Cana

1On athe third day there was a wedding at bCana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus also was invited to the wedding with chis disciples. 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4And Jesus said to her, dWoman, ewhat does this have to do with me? fMy hour has not yet come.” 5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

6Now there were six stone water jars there gfor the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty hgallons.
Greek two or three measures (metrētas); a metrētēs was about 10 gallons or 35 liters
7Jesus said to the servants, Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8And he said to them, Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.” So they took it. 9When the master of the feast tasted jthe water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested khis glory. And lhis disciples believed in him.

12After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother and mhis brothers
Or  brothers and sisters. The plural Greek word adelphoi (translated “brothers”) refers to siblings in a family. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, adelphoi may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters
and his disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

13 oThe Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus pwent up to Jerusalem. 14 qIn the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. 15And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. 16And he told those who sold the pigeons, Take these things away; do not make rmy Father’s house a house of trade.” 17His disciples remembered that it was written, sZeal for your house will consume me.”

18So the Jews said to him, tWhat sign do you show us for doing these things?” 19Jesus answered them, uDestroy this temple, and in three days vI will raise it up.” 20The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple,
Or This temple was built forty-six years ago
and will you raise it up in three days?”
21But he was speaking about xthe temple of his body. 22When therefore he was raised from the dead, yhis disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed zthe Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus Knows What Is in Man

23Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name aawhen they saw the signs that he was doing. 24But Jesus abon his part did not entrust himself to them, because ache knew all people 25and needed no one to bear witness about man, for adhe himself knew what was in man.

John 3

You Must Be Born Again

1Now there was a man of the Pharisees named aeNicodemus, afa ruler of the Jews. 2This man came to Jesus

3Jesus answered him, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is alborn amagain

he cannot aosee the kingdom of God.”
4Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born apof water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 aqThat which is born of the flesh is arflesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

9Nicodemus said to him, azHow can these things be?” 10Jesus answered him, Are you the teacher of Israel baand yet you do not understand these things? 11Truly, truly, I say to you, bbwe speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but bcyou
The Greek for  you is plural here; also four times in verse 12
do not receive our testimony.
12If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 beNo one has bfascended into heaven except bghe who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.
Some manuscripts add who is in heaven
14And bias Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man bjbe lifted up, 15that whoever believes bkin him blmay have eternal life.
Some interpreters hold that the quotation ends at verse 15


For God So Loved the World

16For bnGod so loved bothe world,
Or  For this is how God loved the world
bqthat he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not brperish but have eternal life.
17For bsGod did not send his Son into the world btto condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 buWhoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not bvbelieved in the name of the only Son of God. 19 bwAnd this is the judgment: bxthe light has come into the world, and bypeople loved the darkness rather than the light because bztheir works were evil. 20 caFor everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, cblest his works should be exposed. 21But whoever ccdoes what is true cdcomes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

John the Baptist Exalts Christ

22After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and cewas baptizing. 23John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized 24(for cfJohn had not yet been put in prison).

25Now a discussion arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew over cgpurification. 26And they came to John and said to him, chRabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, cito whom you bore witnesslook, he is baptizing, and cjall are going to him.” 27John answered, ck“A person cannot receive even one thing clunless it is given him cmfrom heaven. 28You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, cnI am not the Christ, but coI have been sent before him.’ 29 cpThe one who has the bride is the bridegroom. cqThe friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, crrejoices greatly at the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 csHe must increase, but I must decrease.”
