1 ^aNow on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that ^bthe stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, ^cthe one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and ^dwe do not know where they have laid him.” 3 ^eSo Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw ^fthe linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and ^gthe face cloth, which had been on Jesus’ ^{▼▼Greek his} head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, ⁱwho had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet ^jthey did not understand the Scripture, ^kthat he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And ^lshe saw ^mtwo angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, ⁿ“Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, ^o“They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and ^psaw Jesus standing, ^qbut she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, ^r“Woman, why are you weeping? ^sWhom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be ^tthe gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, ^{▼▼Or Hebrew} ^v“Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to ^wmy brothers and say to them, ^x‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to ^ymy God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene ^zwent and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 ^aaOn the evening ^abof that day, the first day of the week, ^acthe doors being locked where the disciples were ^adfor fear of the Jews, ^{▼▼Greek Ioudaioi probably refers here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, in that time} Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, ^af“Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, ^aghe showed them his hands and his side. Then ^ahthe disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As ^aithe Father has sent me, ^ajeven so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he ^akbreathed on them and said to them, ^al“Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 ^amIf you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Jesus and Thomas

24 Now ^anThomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, ^{▼▼Greek Didymus} was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, ^ap“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.”

26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. ^aqAlthough the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ^ar“Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, ^as“Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, ^at“My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? ^auBlessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of This Book

30 ^avNow Jesus did many other signs ^awin the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 ^axbut these are written so that you may ^aybelieve that Jesus is the Christ, ^azthe Son of God, and that by believing ^bayou may have life ^bbin his name.

John 21

Jesus Appears to Seven Disciples

1 After this Jesus ^bcrevealed himself ^bdagain to the disciples by ^bethe Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2 Simon Peter, ^bfThomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of ^bgCana in Galilee, ^bhthe sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but ^bithat night they caught nothing.

4 Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples ^bjdid not know that it was Jesus. 5 ^bkJesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” 6 ^blHe said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. 7 That disciple ^bmwhom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, ^bnhe put on his outer garment, for he was ^bostripped for work, and ^bpthrew himself into the sea. 8 The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards ^{▼▼Greek two hundred cubits; a cubit was about 18 inches or 45 centimeters} off.

9 When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, ^br“Come and ^bshave breakfast.” Now ^btnone of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came and ^butook the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14 ^bvThis was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus and Peter

15 When they had ^bwfinished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, ^bx“Simon, ^byson of John, ^bzdo you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed ^camy lambs.” 16 He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, ^cb“Tend ^ccmy sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him ^cdthe third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, ^ceyou know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed ^cfmy sheep. 18 ^cgTruly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, ^chyou used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” 19 (This he said to show ^ciby what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, ^cj“Follow me.”

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

20 Peter turned and saw ^ckthe disciple whom Jesus loved following them, ^clthe one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” 21 When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain ^cmuntil ^cnI come, what is that to you? ^coYou follow me!” 23 So the saying spread abroad among ^cpthe brothers ^{▼▼Or brothers and sisters} that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple ^crwho is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and ^cswe know ^ctthat his testimony is true.

25 Now ^cuthere are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that ^cvthe world itself could not contain the books that would be written.
