John 5

The Healing at the Pool on the Sabbath

1After this there was a afeast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2Now there is in Jerusalem by bthe Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic
Or Hebrew
called Bethesda,
Some manuscripts Bethsaida
which has five roofed colonnades.
3In these lay a multitude of invalidsblind, lame, and eparalyzed.
Some manuscripts insert, wholly or in part, waiting for the moving of the water; 4for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred the water: whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had
5One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” 7The sick man answered him, “Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me.” 8Jesus said to him, gGet up, take up your bed, and walk.” 9 hAnd at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked.

iNow that day was the Sabbath.
10So the Jews
The Greek word Ioudaioi refers specifically here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, who opposed Jesus in that time; also verses 15, 16, 18
said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and kit is not lawful for you to take up your bed.”
11But he answered them, “The man who healed me, that man said to me, Take up your bed, and walk.’ 12They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for lJesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place. 14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, See, you are well! mSin no more, nthat nothing worse may happen to you.” 15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him. 16And this was why the Jews owere persecuting Jesus, pbecause he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17But Jesus answered them, My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

Jesus Is Equal with God

18This was why the Jews qwere seeking all the more to kill him, rbecause not only was he sbreaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God this own Father, umaking himself equal with God.

The Authority of the Son

19So Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, vthe Son wcan do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father
Greek he
does, that the Son does likewise.
20For ythe Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And zgreater works than these will he show him, so that aayou may marvel. 21For as the Father abraises the dead and acgives them life, so adalso the Son gives life aeto whom he will. 22 afFor the Father judges no one, but aghas given all judgment to the Son, 23that all may honor the Son, just as they ahhonor the Father. aiWhoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24Truly, truly, I say to you, ajwhoever hears my word and akbelieves him who sent me has eternal life. He aldoes not come into judgment, but amhas passed from death to life.

25Truly, truly, I say to you, anan hour is coming, and is now here, when aothe dead will hear apthe voice of the Son of God, and those who hear aqwill live. 26 arFor as the Father has life in himself, asso he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27And he athas given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28Do not marvel at this, for auan hour is coming when avall who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29and come out, awthose who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Witnesses to Jesus

30 axI can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and aymy judgment is just, because azI seek not my own will babut the will of him who sent me. 31 bbIf I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not true. 32There is bcanother who bears witness about me, and bdI know that the testimony that he bears about me is true. 33 beYou sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34Not that bfthe testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35He was a burning and bgshining lamp, and bhyou were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36But bithe testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For bjthe works that the Father has given me bkto accomplish, the very works that I am doing, blbear witness about me that bmthe Father has sent me. 37And the Father who sent me bnhas himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, bohis form you have never seen, 38and bpyou do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. 39 bqYou search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and brit is they that bear witness about me, 40yet bsyou refuse to come to me that you may have life. 41 btI do not receive glory from people. 42But buI know that you do not have bvthe love of God within you. 43I have come bwin my Father’s name, and bxyou do not receive me. byIf another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and bzdo not seek the glory that comes from cathe only God? 45Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, cbon whom you have set your hope. 46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for cche wrote of me. 47But cdif you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

John 6

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

1After this ceJesus went away to the other side of cfthe Sea of Galilee, which is cgthe Sea of Tiberias. 2And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 3Jesus went up on chthe mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 4Now cithe Passover, the cjfeast of the Jews, was at hand. 5 ckLifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to clPhilip, Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” 6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 7 cmPhilip answered him, “Two hundred denarii
A  denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer
worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.”
8One of his disciples, coAndrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9“There is a boy here who has five cpbarley loaves and two fish, but cqwhat are they for so many?” 10Jesus said, Have the people sit down.” crNow there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11Jesus then took the loaves, and cswhen he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. 14When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, ctThis is indeed cuthe Prophet cvwho is to come into the world!”

15 cwPerceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus cxwithdrew again to cythe mountain by himself.

Jesus Walks on Water

16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles,
Greek twenty-five or thirty stadia; a stadion was about 607 feet or 185 meters
they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.
20 daBut he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

I Am the Bread of Life

22On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only dbone boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord dchad given thanks. 24 ddSo when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and dewent to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, dfRabbi, when did you come here?” 26Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, dgyou are seeking me, not because you saw dhsigns, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 diDo not work for the food that perishes, but for djthe food that endures to eternal life, which dkthe Son of Man will give to you. For on dlhim God the Father has dmset his seal.” 28Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing dnthe works of God?” 29Jesus answered them, This is the work of God, dothat you believe in him whom dphe has sent.” 30So they said to him, dqThen what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 drOur fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ds‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32Jesus then said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is dthe who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34They said to him, duSir, give us this bread always.”

35Jesus said to them, dvI am the bread of life; dwwhoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 dxAll that dythe Father gives me will come to me, and dzwhoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38For eaI have come down from heaven, not to do ebmy own will but ecthe will of him edwho sent me. 39And eethis is the will of him who sent me, efthat I should lose nothing of egall that he has given me, but ehraise it up on the last day. 40For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who eilooks on the Son and ejbelieves in him ekshould have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, elI am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42They said, emIs not this Jesus, enthe son of Joseph, whose father and mother eowe know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven?” 43Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me epdraws him. And eqI will raise him up on the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets, erAnd they will all be estaught by God.’ etEveryone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me 46 eunot that anyone has seen the Father except evhe who is from God; he ewhas seen the Father. 47Truly, truly, I say to you, exwhoever believes has eternal life. 48 eyI am the bread of life. 49 ezYour fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and fathey died. 50 fbThis is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it fcand not die. 51I am the living bread fdthat came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give fefor the life of the world is ffmy flesh.”

52The Jews then fgdisputed among themselves, saying, fhHow can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53So Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of fithe Son of Man and drink his blood, you fjhave no life in you. 54Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood fkhas eternal life, and flI will raise him up on the last day. 55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood fmabides in me, and I in him. 57As fnthe living Father fosent me, and fpI live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 fqThis is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread
Greek lacks  the bread
the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
59Jesus
Greek He
said these things in the synagogue, as he taught ftat Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life

60 fuWhen many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61But Jesus, fvknowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62Then what if you were to see fwthe Son of Man fxascending to fywhere he was before? 63 fzIt is the Spirit who gives life; gathe flesh is no help at all. gbThe words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64But gcthere are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus gdknew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and gewho it was who would betray him.) 65And he said, This is why I told you gfthat no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

66 ggAfter this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67So Jesus said to ghthe twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have githe words of eternal life, 69and gjwe have believed, and have come to know, that gkyou are glthe Holy One of God.” 70Jesus answered them, gm“Did I not choose you, gnthe twelve? And yet one of you is goa devil.” 71He spoke of Judas gpthe son of Simon Iscariot, for gqhe, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.
