John 6

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand

1After this aJesus went away to the other side of bthe Sea of Galilee, which is cthe Sea of Tiberias. 2And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick. 3Jesus went up on dthe mountain, and there he sat down with his disciples. 4Now ethe Passover, the ffeast of the Jews, was at hand. 5 gLifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to hPhilip, Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” 6He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do. 7 iPhilip answered him, “Two hundred denarii
A  denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer
worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.”
8One of his disciples, kAndrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9“There is a boy here who has five lbarley loaves and two fish, but mwhat are they for so many?” 10Jesus said, Have the people sit down.” nNow there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 11Jesus then took the loaves, and owhen he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. 14When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, pThis is indeed qthe Prophet rwho is to come into the world!”

15 sPerceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus twithdrew again to uthe mountain by himself.

Jesus Walks on Water

16When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19When they had rowed about three or four miles,
Greek twenty-five or thirty stadia; a stadion was about 607 feet or 185 meters
they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.
20 wBut he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

I Am the Bread of Life

22On the next day the crowd that remained on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only xone boat there, and that Jesus had not entered the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord yhad given thanks. 24 zSo when the crowd saw that Jesus was not there, nor his disciples, they themselves got into the boats and aawent to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.

25When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, abRabbi, when did you come here?” 26Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, acyou are seeking me, not because you saw adsigns, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 aeDo not work for the food that perishes, but for afthe food that endures to eternal life, which agthe Son of Man will give to you. For on ahhim God the Father has aiset his seal.” 28Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing ajthe works of God?” 29Jesus answered them, This is the work of God, akthat you believe in him whom alhe has sent.” 30So they said to him, amThen what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 anOur fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ao‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32Jesus then said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is aphe who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34They said to him, aqSir, give us this bread always.”

35Jesus said to them, arI am the bread of life; aswhoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 atAll that authe Father gives me will come to me, and avwhoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38For awI have come down from heaven, not to do axmy own will but aythe will of him azwho sent me. 39And bathis is the will of him who sent me, bbthat I should lose nothing of bcall that he has given me, but bdraise it up on the last day. 40For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who belooks on the Son and bfbelieves in him bgshould have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, bhI am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42They said, biIs not this Jesus, bjthe son of Joseph, whose father and mother bkwe know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven?” 43Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me bldraws him. And bmI will raise him up on the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets, bnAnd they will all be botaught by God.’ bpEveryone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me 46 bqnot that anyone has seen the Father except brhe who is from God; he bshas seen the Father. 47Truly, truly, I say to you, btwhoever believes has eternal life. 48 buI am the bread of life. 49 bvYour fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and bwthey died. 50 bxThis is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it byand not die. 51I am the living bread bzthat came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give cafor the life of the world is cbmy flesh.”

52The Jews then ccdisputed among themselves, saying, cdHow can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53So Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of cethe Son of Man and drink his blood, you cfhave no life in you. 54Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood cghas eternal life, and chI will raise him up on the last day. 55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood ciabides in me, and I in him. 57As cjthe living Father cksent me, and clI live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 cmThis is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread
Greek lacks  the bread
the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.”
59Jesus
Greek He
said these things in the synagogue, as he taught cpat Capernaum.

The Words of Eternal Life

60 cqWhen many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61But Jesus, crknowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62Then what if you were to see csthe Son of Man ctascending to cuwhere he was before? 63 cvIt is the Spirit who gives life; cwthe flesh is no help at all. cxThe words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64But cythere are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus czknew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and dawho it was who would betray him.) 65And he said, This is why I told you dbthat no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

66 dcAfter this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67So Jesus said to ddthe twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have dethe words of eternal life, 69and dfwe have believed, and have come to know, that dgyou are dhthe Holy One of God.” 70Jesus answered them, di“Did I not choose you, djthe twelve? And yet one of you is dka devil.” 71He spoke of Judas dlthe son of Simon Iscariot, for dmhe, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.

John 11

The Death of Lazarus

1Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of dnMary and her sister Martha. 2 doIt was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. 3So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, dphe whom you love is ill.” 4But when Jesus heard it he said, dqThis illness does not lead to death. It is for drthe glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

5Now dsJesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 6So, when he heard that Lazarus
Greek he; also verse 17
was ill, duhe stayed two days longer in the place where he was.
7Then after this he said to the disciples, dv“Let us go to Judea again.” 8The disciples said to him, dwRabbi, dxthe Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” 9Jesus answered, dy“Are there not twelve hours in the day? dzIf anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. 10But eaif anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not ebin him.” 11After saying these things, he said to them, Our friend Lazarus echas fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” 12The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” 13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. 14Then Jesus told them plainly, Lazarus has died, 15and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” 16 edSo Thomas, called the Twin,
Greek Didymus
said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, efthat we may die with him.”

I Am the Resurrection and the Life

17Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb egfour days. 18Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles
Greek fifteen stadia; a stadion was about 607 feet or 185 meters
off,
19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary eito console them concerning their brother. 20 ejSo when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house. 21Martha said to ekJesus, “Lord, elif you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, emGod will give you.” 23Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise again.” 24 enMartha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in eothe resurrection on the last day.” 25Jesus said to her, epI am the resurrection and eqthe life.
Some manuscripts omit  and the life
Whoever believes in me, esthough he die, etyet shall he live,
26and everyone who lives and believes in me eushall never die. Do you believe this?” 27She said to him, “Yes, Lord; evI believe that ewyou are the Christ, the Son of God, exwho is coming into the world.”

Jesus Weeps

28When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, ey“The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” 29And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. 31When the Jews ezwho were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. 32Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, faLord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” 33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he fbwas deeply moved
Or  was indignant; also verse 38
in his spirit and fdgreatly troubled.
34And he said, Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 feJesus wept. 36So the Jews said, “See ffhow he loved him!” 37But some of them said, “Could not he fgwho opened the eyes of the blind man fhalso have kept this man from dying?”

Jesus Raises Lazarus

38Then Jesus, fideeply moved again, came to the tomb. It was fja cave, and fka stone lay against it. 39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for flhe has been dead four days.” 40Jesus said to her, fm“Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see fnthe glory of God?” 41So they took away the stone. And Jesus folifted up his eyes and said, Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 fpI knew that you always hear me, but I said this fqon account of the people standing around, frthat they may believe that you sent me.” 43When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out.” 44 fsThe man who had died came out, fthis hands and feet bound with linen strips, and fuhis face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and let him go.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus

45 fvMany of the Jews therefore, fwwho had come with Mary and fxhad seen what he did, believed in him, 46but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. 47So the chief priests and the Pharisees fygathered fzthe council and said, gaWhat are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and gbthe Romans will come and take away both our gcplace and our nation.” 49But one of them, gdCaiaphas, gewho was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all. 50Nor do you understand that gfit is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” 51He did not say this of his own accord, but ggbeing high priest that year ghhe prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52and ginot for the nation only, but also gjto gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53So from that day on they gkmade plans to put him to death.

54Jesus therefore glno longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there to the region near the wilderness, to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples.

55Now gmthe Passover of the Jews was at hand, and gnmany went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover goto purify themselves. 56 gpThey were looking for
Greek  were seeking for
Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?”
57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him.
