1 After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because ^athe Jews ^{▼▼Or Judeans; Greek Ioudaioi probably refers here to Jewish religious leaders, and others under their influence, in that time} were seeking to kill him. 2 Now ^cthe Jews’ Feast of ^dBooths was at hand. 3 ^eSo his brothers ^{▼▼Or brothers and sisters; also verses 5, 10} said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, ^gshow yourself to the world.” 5 ^hFor not even ⁱhis brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, ^j“My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but ^kit hates me because I testify about it that ^lits works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not ^{▼▼Some manuscripts add yet} going up to this feast, for ⁿmy time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee.

10 But after ^ohis brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. 11 ^pThe Jews ^qwere looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” 12 And there was much ^rmuttering about him among the people. ^sWhile some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, ^the is leading the people astray.” 13 Yet ^ufor fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him.

14 About the middle of the feast Jesus went up ^vinto the temple and began teaching. 15 The Jews therefore ^wmarveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, ^{▼▼Or this man knows his letters} when he has never studied?” 16 So Jesus answered them, ^y“My teaching is not mine, but his ^zwho sent me. 17 ^aaIf anyone’s will is to do God’s ^{▼▼Greek his} will, ^ache will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I ^adam speaking on my own authority. 18 The one who speaks on his own authority ^aeseeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. 19 ^afHas not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. ^agWhy do you seek to kill me?” 20 The crowd answered, ^ah“You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” 21 Jesus answered them, “I did ^aione work, and you all marvel at it. 22 ^ajMoses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but ^akfrom the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. 23 If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, ^alare you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? 24 ^amDo not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Can This Be the Christ?

25 Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, “Is not this the man whom ^anthey seek to kill? 26 And here he is, ^aospeaking openly, and they say nothing to him! Can it be that ^apthe authorities really know that this is the Christ? 27 But ^aqwe know ^arwhere this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, ^asno one will know where he comes from.” 28 So Jesus proclaimed, ^atas he taught in the temple, ^au“You know me, and you know where I come from. But ^avI have not come of my own accord. ^awHe who sent me is true, ^axand him you do not know. 29 ^ayI know him, for I come ^azfrom him, and ^bahe sent me.” 30 ^bbSo they were seeking to arrest him, but ^bcno one laid a hand on him, ^bdbecause his hour had not yet come. 31 Yet ^bemany of the people believed in him. They said, ^bf“When the Christ appears, will he do more signs than this man has done?”

Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus

32 The Pharisees heard the crowd ^bgmuttering these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent ^bhofficers to arrest him. 33 Jesus then said, ^bi“I will be with you a little longer, and then ^bjI am going to him who sent me. 34 ^bkYou will seek me and you will not find me. Where I am you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we will not find him? ^blDoes he intend to go to ^bmthe Dispersion among ^bnthe Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36 What does he mean by saying, ^bo‘You will seek me and you will not find me,’ and, ‘Where I am you cannot come’?”

Rivers of Living Water

37 ^bpOn the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, ^bq“If anyone thirsts, let him ^brcome to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, ^bsas ^{▼▼Or let him come to me, and let him who believes in me drink. As} the Scripture has said, ^bu‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of ^bvliving water.’” 39 Now ^bwthis he said about the Spirit, ^bxwhom those who believed in him were to receive, ^byfor as yet the Spirit had not been ^bzgiven, ^cabecause Jesus was not yet glorified.

Division Among the People

40 When they heard these words, ^cbsome of the people said, “This really is ^ccthe Prophet.” 41 Others said, “This is ^cdthe Christ.” But some said, ^ce“Is the Christ to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes ^cffrom the offspring of David, and comes ^cgfrom Bethlehem, the village ^chwhere David was?” 43 So there was ^cia division among the people over him. 44 ^cjSome of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

45 ^ckThe officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46 The officers answered, ^cl“No one ever spoke like this man!” 47 The Pharisees answered them, ^cm“Have you also been deceived? 48 ^cnHave any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? 49 But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.” 50 ^coNicodemus, who had gone to him before, and who was one of them, said to them, 51 ^cp“Does our law judge a man without first ^cqgiving him a hearing and learning what he does?” 52 They replied, ^cr“Are you from Galilee too? Search and see that ^csno prophet arises from Galilee.”

Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind

1 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, ^cu“Rabbi, ^cvwho sinned, ^cwthis man or ^cxhis parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but ^cythat the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must ^czwork the works of him who sent me ^dawhile it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, ^dbI am the light of the world.” 6 Having said these things, ^dche spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. ^ddThen he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in ^dethe pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and ^dfcame back seeing.

8 The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar were saying, ^dg“Is this not the man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some said, “It is he.” Others said, “No, but he is like him.” He kept saying, “I am the man.” 10 So they said to him, “Then how were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered, ^dh“The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight.” 12 They said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”

13 They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14 ^diNow it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15 ^djSo the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not ^dkfrom God, ^dlfor he does not keep the Sabbath.” But others said, ^dm“How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And ^dnthere was a division among them. 17 So they said again to the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, ^do“He is a prophet.”

How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind. 21 But how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him; he is of age. He will speak for himself.” 22 (His parents said these things ^drbecause they feared the Jews, for ^dsthe Jews had already agreed that if anyone should ^dtconfess Jesus ^{▼▼Greek him} to be Christ, ^dvhe was to be put out of the synagogue.) 23 Therefore his parents said, ^dw“He is of age; ask him.”

24 So for the second time they called the man who had been blind and said to him, ^dx“Give glory to God. We know that ^dythis man is a sinner.” 25 He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I ^dzwas blind, now I see.” 26 They said to him, “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?” 27 He answered them, ^ea“I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?” 28 And they reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but ^ebwe are disciples of Moses. 29 We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this man, ^ecwe do not know where he comes from.” 30 The man answered, “Why, this is ^edan amazing thing! ^eeYou do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31 We know that ^efGod does not listen to sinners, but ^egif anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32 Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33 ^ehIf this man were not from God, he could do nothing.” 34 They answered him, ^ei“You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they ^ejcast him out.

35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and having found him he said, “Do you believe in ^ekthe Son of Man?” ^{▼▼Some manuscripts the Son of God} 36 He answered, ^em“And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?” 37 Jesus said to him, “You have seen him, and ^enit is he who is speaking to you.” 38 He said, “Lord, I believe,” and he worshiped him. 39 Jesus said, ^eo“For judgment I came into this world, ^epthat those who do not see may see, and ^eqthose who see may become blind.” 40 Some of the Pharisees near him heard these things, and said to him, ^er“Are we also blind?” 41 Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, ^esyou would have no guilt; ^{▼▼Greek you would not have sin} but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.
