5 aAnd the people of Nineveh believed God. bThey called for a fast and cput on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

The People of Nineveh Repent

6The word reached
Or had reached
the king of Nineveh, and ehe arose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, fand sat in ashes.
7And he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh, g“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Let neither man nor hbeast, herd nor flock, taste anything. Let them not feed or drink water, 8but let man and ibeast be covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God. jLet everyone turn from his evil way and from kthe violence that is in his hands. 9 lWho knows? God may turn and relent mand turn from his fierce anger, so that we may not perish.”

10When God saw what they did, nhow they turned from their evil way, oGod relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it.

Matthew 11:20-24

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

20 pThen he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21 qWoe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in rTyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 sBut I tell you, it will be more bearable on tthe day of judgment for uTyre and Sidon than for you. 23And you, vCapernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to wHades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 xBut I tell you that yit will be more tolerable on zthe day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”
