Joshua 10

The Sun Stands Still

1As soon as Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem, heard how Joshua had captured Ai and had devoted it to destruction,
That is, set apart ( devoted) as an offering to the Lord (for destruction); also verses 28, 35, 37, 39, 40
bdoing to Ai and its king cas he had done to Jericho and its king, and dhow the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,
2 ehe
One Hebrew manuscript, Vulgate (compare Syriac); most Hebrew manuscripts they
feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all its men were warriors.
3So Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, to Piram king of Jarmuth, to Japhia king of Lachish, and to Debir king of Eglon, saying, 4“Come up to me and help me, and let us strike Gibeon. For git has made peace with Joshua and with the people of Israel.” 5Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, hgathered their forces and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon and made war against it.

6And the men of Gibeon sent to Joshua iat the camp in Gilgal, saying, “Do not relax your hand from your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us and help us, for all the kings of the Amorites who dwell in the hill country are gathered against us.” 7So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and jall the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valor. 8And the Lord said to Joshua, k“Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands. lNot a man of them shall stand before you.” 9So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal. 10 mAnd the Lord threw them into a panic before Israel, who
Or and he
struck them with a great blow at Gibeon and chased them by the way of othe ascent of Beth-horon and struck them as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
11And as they fled before Israel, while they were pgoing down the ascent of Beth-horon, qthe Lord threw down large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died. There were more who died because of the hailstones than the sons of Israel killed with the sword.

12At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel,

rSun, stand still at Gibeon,
and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”
13And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped,
until the nation took vengeance on their enemies.
Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.
14 sThere has been no day like it before or since, when the Lord heeded the voice of a man, for tthe Lord fought for Israel.

15So uJoshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

Five Amorite Kings Executed

16These five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at vMakkedah. 17And it was told to Joshua, “The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.” 18And Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave and set men by it to guard them, 19but do not stay there yourselves. Pursue your enemies; wattack their rear guard. Do not let them enter their cities, for the Lord your God has given them into your hand.” 20When Joshua and the sons of Israel had finished striking them with a great blow xuntil they were wiped out, and when the remnant that remained of them had entered into the fortified cities, 21then all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah. yNot a man moved his tongue against any of the people of Israel.

22Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.” 23And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, “Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” Then they came near and put their feet on their necks. 25And Joshua said to them, z“Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. aaFor thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” 26And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And abthey hung on the trees until evening. 27But at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and acthey took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.

28As for adMakkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah aejust as he had done to the king of Jericho.

Conquest of Southern Canaan

29Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to afLibnah and fought against Libnah. 30And the Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king agas he had done to the king of Jericho.

31Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to ahLachish and laid siege to it and fought against it. 32And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.

33Then Horam king of aiGezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining.

34Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to ajEglon. And they laid siege to it and fought against it. 35And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lachish.

36Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to akHebron. And they fought against it 37and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and devoted it to destruction and every person in it.

38Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to alDebir and fought against it 39and he captured it with its king and all its towns. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king.

40So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland amand the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, anbut devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded. 41And Joshua struck them from aoKadesh-barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of apGoshen, as far as Gibeon. 42And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, aqbecause the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 arThen Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

Joshua 13

Land Still to Be Conquered

1Now Joshua aswas old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land atto possess. 2 auThis is the land that yet remains: all the avregions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites 3(from the awShihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; axthere are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of aythe Avvim, 4in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of azthe Amorites, 5and the land of the baGebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from bbBaal-gad below Mount Hermon to bcLebo-hamath, 6all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to bdMisrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. I myself will drive bethem out from before the people of Israel. Only bfallot the land to Israel bgfor an inheritance, as I have commanded you. 7Now therefore bhdivide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan

8With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh
Hebrew  With it
the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, bjwhich Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them:
9 bkfrom Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and blall the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 bmand all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites; 11and Gilead, and the bnregion of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and boall Bashan to Salecah; 12 bpall the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of bqthe remnant of the Rephaim); brthese Moses had struck and driven out. 13 bsYet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day.

14 btTo the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him.

15And Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their clans. 16So their territory was from Aroer, buwhich is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by bvMedeba; 17with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; bwDibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 bxand Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19and byKiriathaim, and bzSibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20and caBeth-peor, and cbthe slopes of Pisgah, and ccBeth-jeshimoth, 21that is, cdall the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, cewhom Moses defeated with cfthe leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 cgBalaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain. 23And the border of the people of Reuben was the Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the people of Reuben, according to their clans with their cities and villages.

24Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans. 25 chTheir territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of ciRabbah, 26and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from cjMahanaim to the territory of Debir,
Septuagint, Syriac, Vulgate; Hebrew Lidebir
27and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, clSuccoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of cmChinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan. 28This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages.

29And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. 30Their region extended from cnMahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all cothe towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31and half Gilead, and cpAshtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of cqMachir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans.

32These are the inheritances that Moses distributed crin the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho. 33 csBut to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, ctjust as he said to them.
