63But the aJebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, bthe people of Judah could not drive out, cso the Jebusites dwell with the people of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

Joshua 16:10

10However, dthey did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites have lived in the midst of Ephraim to this day but have been made eto do forced labor.

Joshua 17:12-16

12 fYet the people of Manasseh could not take possession of those cities, but the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. 13Now when the people of Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites gto forced labor, but did not utterly drive them out.

14Then hthe people of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, “Why have you given me but ione lot and one portion as an inheritance, although I am ja numerous people, since all along the Lord has blessed me?” 15And Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go up by yourselves to the forest, and there clear ground for yourselves in the land of the Perizzites and kthe Rephaim, since lthe hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.” 16The people of Joseph said, “The hill country is not enough for us. Yet all the Canaanites who dwell in the plain have mchariots of iron, both those in Beth-shean and its villages and those in nthe Valley of Jezreel.”

Joshua 23:12-13

12For if you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you oand make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, 13know for certain that pthe Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, qbut they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good ground that the Lord your God has given you.

Judges 1:19

19 rAnd the Lord was with Judah, and he took possession of the shill country, but he could not drive out the inhabitants of the plain because they had tchariots of iron.

Judges 1:21

21But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, uso the Jebusites have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

Failure to Complete the Conquest

27 vManasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages, for the Canaanites persisted in dwelling in that land. 28When Israel grew strong, they put the Canaanites to forced labor, but did not drive them out completely.

29 wAnd Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer, so the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them.

30Zebulun did not drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, or the inhabitants of xNahalol, so the Canaanites lived among them, but became subject to forced labor.

31 yAsher did not drive out the inhabitants of Acco, or the inhabitants of Sidon or of Ahlab or of Achzib or of Helbah or of Aphik or of Rehob, 32so the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land, for they did not drive them out.

33Naphtali did not drive out the inhabitants of zBeth-shemesh, or the inhabitants of Beth-anath, so they lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath became subject to forced labor for them.

34 aaThe Amorites pressed the people of Dan back into the hill country, for they did not allow them to come down to the plain. 35The Amorites persisted in dwelling in Mount Heres, abin Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph rested heavily on them, and they became subject to forced labor.
